Seems like the worst warm weather stuff always hits right in August. We just had some bad storms roll through the area. Here's a screenshot of the NWS radar from about 45 minutes ago.
We had wind and 1/4" hail here. No major damage that I can see to anything. Thought we were going to be without power and internet for a while but it came back before too long. Lots of electrical lines and trees down in the area.
The worst of it was up north of where I am, such as up in Fayette county where there were collapsed buildings and roofs getting peeled off. Lots of people without power here.
A thunderstorm with winds topping at least 70 miles per hour swept across eastern Iowa Tuesday causing buildings to collapse.
The Fayette County Emergency Management reported a gust of 100 mph and confirmed buildings had partially collapsed in both Oelwein and Sumner areas. One person was trapped in the Baron Motor Supply building in Oelwein was able to get out.
An auto mechanic TV9 spoke to in Tripoli described heavy damage in town, saying “You can’t hardly drive down any streets in Tripoli right now.”
Storm spotters also reported widespread downed trees and powerlines along Highway 150 from Hazelton to Independence and homes damaged in Fairbanks.
Temperature dropped 20 degrees over the past hour.
