We got hit by a derecho

We had a line of thunderstorms roar through Iowa today.

Quote

A derecho has raced eastward Monday, producing widespread damaging winds across a part of the Midwest and severe thunderstorms continue pushing east into early Tuesday.

A derecho is a widespread wind damage event caused by severe thunderstorms, and this one got its start in eastern Nebraska Monday morning.

Bunch of trees are down throughout the state and a number of buildings were damaged - all by the high winds.  Here's a slideshow of some of the damage from the NBC station, and one from the ABC station.

A couple spots in our yard had some water but we didn't have much damage here.  We didn't lose any trees or have other damage.  My sister had called us from Des Moines to let us know the storms were pretty bad so we were able to bring chairs and stuff inside beforehand.

sounds like my cousin's car got hit by a tree and my aunt/uncle ( i have actually never met this aunt, she's a second wife) lost their porch? My mom wasn't clear and she called people by the wrong names but it sounds like it was completely separated from the house and sailed on down the street, although I'm not sure how that works. I've never been to Iowa, other than maybe a drive through, so i don't know what the architecture is like or how it works.

Glad you are safe

Glad to hear you are safe! I feel for those who will soon be fighting with their insurance company to try and get their damages fixed. :angry-banghead:

Thank you all! :)

No damage here that we have to fuck around with the insurance company about.

But due to the storm causing multiple fiber cuts we're all pretty much fucked for the next few days when it comes to internet access.

I asked the site manager what the fuck we're supposed to do (not quite in those words) if we blow out our cell phone data caps in working from home since they won't let people work in the office yet.  (Because I don't remember if I have unlimited data and the site is down right now).  He said that the company is willing to do reimbursements if we have to blow out our caps for hotspot data.

I hope the parental units don't whine too much about the loss of TV and pull out some DVDs to watch.  The first second either the paternal or maternal unit starts whining I'm going to totally remind them they pulled down the TV antenna so we don't have that as a backup and if they want they can pay to have a new long range one put up.

CR is so destroyed that school is starting on line- maybe Sept 14.  High schools so damaged that kids might not be back in them until January.  My junior is having a melt down that this is ruining his most important year.  I'm reaching for the alcohol- we have been under the same roof together since March 13 due to Covid.  Damn I wanted him and his Trump wardrobe out of my house for a few hours a day at school.  The young repuke club at his school misses their leader....

Yeah CR seems to get the brunt of things from the 2008 flood up to this year's derecho.  At least in 2008 we had a functional state government with Democrats in charge and even a somewhat functional Federal government.  Not like now where we have #CovidKim and a compliant reich wing legislature who can barely be bothered to show any concern for Iowa and who are more concerned about kissing Fuck Face's ass.

Kimmy's address to the repuke convention was such a joke.  We got all of the key phrases:  Iowan's do the right thing, Iowan's are hardworking, blah blah.  No mention of fed $$$ to rebuild our schools, oh wait I can just find a nice charter for my son.  School choice!  I want out of Iowa so bad.

Get in line.  I'm applying to every Minnesota job I can think of and hell even some Wisconsin jobs.

Tomorrow is the day of the courtship announcement do you think we will see a magazine story come out today or will they play the surprise card and announce next week after the season finale? Like they will cut the announcement just at the end and left suspense?

I want their definition of "unfaithfulness"!  In Lisa and RC jr's world, I suspect not doing what your are told/asked to do, could constitute, unfaithfulness.  This stuff is so unbelievable.  I feel for the children.  What heartache.

I wonder that, too.  The wording is pretty careful.  Lisa specifically accuses her ex-husbands of infidelities, but the murky charge of "marital unfaithfulness"  is hurled at the late Mrs. Sproul.

I'm all about discretion, but if she's publicly accusing the Original First Lady of the Sproul Household of adultery, she better come with receipts.  If it's anything other, then shame on her for using deceptive language to damage a dead woman's reputation.  She knows what people will assume when they read these words.

Yeah fuck that. Hell it is. This chubby don’t like stairs anyway, I’ll take the highway...

I’m curious, and have been thinking. Do people think that the scandals of the molestation and Ashley Madison breaking actually in someway helped free Jill?  Shake off the secrets and address them. Be able to see things in a light outside of her family’s bubble of “forgiveness”.
Of course I don’t condone the victims being outed. But I’m looking for a long term upside to it.

I get your point, but the whole world knowing you were abused never helps. One thing is that a victim chooses to share information, and a very different one is that the information leaks. Jill and the other victims surely lost a lot of confidence due to being outed. Also it's not that they were assaulted on the street, it was a brother, ugh.

It's like when people say that, if you overcome an abuse, you get stronger, so the abuse made you better. No, never, ever. That kind of ideas make the abuse indirectly good and it's a very dangerous thought.

I will get a lot of hate from you guys for saying this but I grew up very conservative almost fundie. It took a very long time for me to break free of the hate and the beliefs. The small steps to matter. Those are the small moments of breaking free. If everyone thinks that you are incapable of changes you will never change, and the change is hard and soul sucking. It breaks every last piece of you until there is nothing left. Give them a chance and try not being as judgemental as you think they are.

This! We need to remember when we’re discussing Jill (and others) that we aren’t just discussing characters that exist for our entertainment. Believing in signs of change that seem pretty clear, and hoping that they continue, is not the same thing as leg humping. These are actual people we’re talking about. The fact that the opinion of most people who have come from backgrounds similar to Jill is that these are much bigger signs than those in the mainstream world may think, says a lot to me.

I was widowed (without kids) over 20 years ago, and while it is true that the past becomes a bit rosier with distance, I have moved on. I expect my new partner to understand the sadness that comes from acknowledging certain anniversaries because that's just being a decent human being. I would never, ever tolerate my new partner talking about my previous one in the way Lisa has about Denise. Never. In the same way, I would never talk shit about my new partner's ex in any kind of public forum, and particularly not in front of their children.

This is cruel and unbelievably selfish behaviour from both of them. The fact that they can find biblical justification for their assholery speaks volumes about what faith is to them.
