We got hit by a derecho

We had a line of thunderstorms roar through Iowa today.

Quote

A derecho has raced eastward Monday, producing widespread damaging winds across a part of the Midwest and severe thunderstorms continue pushing east into early Tuesday.

A derecho is a widespread wind damage event caused by severe thunderstorms, and this one got its start in eastern Nebraska Monday morning.

Bunch of trees are down throughout the state and a number of buildings were damaged - all by the high winds.  Here's a slideshow of some of the damage from the NBC station, and one from the ABC station.

A couple spots in our yard had some water but we didn't have much damage here.  We didn't lose any trees or have other damage.  My sister had called us from Des Moines to let us know the storms were pretty bad so we were able to bring chairs and stuff inside beforehand.

sounds like my cousin's car got hit by a tree and my aunt/uncle ( i have actually never met this aunt, she's a second wife) lost their porch? My mom wasn't clear and she called people by the wrong names but it sounds like it was completely separated from the house and sailed on down the street, although I'm not sure how that works. I've never been to Iowa, other than maybe a drive through, so i don't know what the architecture is like or how it works.

Glad you are safe

Glad to hear you are safe! I feel for those who will soon be fighting with their insurance company to try and get their damages fixed. :angry-banghead:

Thank you all! :)

No damage here that we have to fuck around with the insurance company about.

But due to the storm causing multiple fiber cuts we're all pretty much fucked for the next few days when it comes to internet access.

I asked the site manager what the fuck we're supposed to do (not quite in those words) if we blow out our cell phone data caps in working from home since they won't let people work in the office yet.  (Because I don't remember if I have unlimited data and the site is down right now).  He said that the company is willing to do reimbursements if we have to blow out our caps for hotspot data.

I hope the parental units don't whine too much about the loss of TV and pull out some DVDs to watch.  The first second either the paternal or maternal unit starts whining I'm going to totally remind them they pulled down the TV antenna so we don't have that as a backup and if they want they can pay to have a new long range one put up.

CR is so destroyed that school is starting on line- maybe Sept 14.  High schools so damaged that kids might not be back in them until January.  My junior is having a melt down that this is ruining his most important year.  I'm reaching for the alcohol- we have been under the same roof together since March 13 due to Covid.  Damn I wanted him and his Trump wardrobe out of my house for a few hours a day at school.  The young repuke club at his school misses their leader....

Yeah CR seems to get the brunt of things from the 2008 flood up to this year's derecho.  At least in 2008 we had a functional state government with Democrats in charge and even a somewhat functional Federal government.  Not like now where we have #CovidKim and a compliant reich wing legislature who can barely be bothered to show any concern for Iowa and who are more concerned about kissing Fuck Face's ass.

Kimmy's address to the repuke convention was such a joke.  We got all of the key phrases:  Iowan's do the right thing, Iowan's are hardworking, blah blah.  No mention of fed $$$ to rebuild our schools, oh wait I can just find a nice charter for my son.  School choice!  I want out of Iowa so bad.

Get in line.  I'm applying to every Minnesota job I can think of and hell even some Wisconsin jobs.

She talked about how the little children were taking bread from the pantry and putting it in there. So maybe it was clean when it came home but then the food got in it?

I think she just lied.  She didn't want to admit that she hadn't even opened the cabinet and cleaned it out so she blamed it on the boys.  They'd have no reason to put bread in there and, honestly, it didn't look like bread crumbs.  Abbie was so excited over her latest ugly find that it hadn't occurred to her to clean it up first.

I think the little boys just get up to lots of shenanigans because Braggie refuses to supervise them.

I think with all of Josh’s issues, the families still in AR, for the most part, have hunkered down and are protecting their own family’s privacy. The less they expose themselves, the less pushback and snark they receive.

Which of course is a smart move in my opinion.

People on Reddit think Joy wasn't there, which is understandable since she went through something similar. Going to something like that would probably just bring all that pain back up.

RE: number of c-sections - I've heard of women in Europe being told 2 only; my friend's parents argued that Americans do more and their doctor okayed four. Women in US 4 only. But have met women who have had 5 sections. Two women I know were told at their last c-section (3rd and 5th) that their uterus was at the point of rupture and advised them to not have any more pregnancies. My point is it's very individual and a doctors should consider individual circumstances.
