Same Game, Different Laptop: The Whittakers

So my laptop went stupid, again. I think the battery needs replacing.

My mum kindly lent me her laptop (which she doesn't really use) and I downloaded Origin/Sims 4.

My first port of call was to create the Whittakers! The little family consists of Mark and Julia and their kitten, Lily, who's a calico.

Julia is a Nerd Brain, which involves becoming very good at Logic and Handiness. She also enjoys video games!

But where's Lily....?

She's so teeny! Unlike in Sims 2 and Sims 3 Pets, you can create a kitten in CAS. You could adopt a kitten in 2 and 3, but not create one yourself.

Just like with Vincent Powell, Mark is a wannabe chef.

They bought Lily a comfy bed... but she's a cat, so she's sleeping outdoors. At least it's on grass rather than hard concrete...

Off to work as an astronaut!

Finally, Lily's sleeping in her cat bed...

Ta da! She's a big girl now!

Uh oh, Lily started eating the vegetable dumplings...

The Whittakers live in Willow Creek. Their home's Lot Traits are Chef's Kitchen, Great Soil (helps with Gardening) and Science Lair (Logic and Rocket Science).

This bizarre-looking contraption is a cupcake machine, although it can also produce various other baked goods with the Baking skill (Cooking skill is for the cupcakes, and the Baking skill produces stuff like doughnuts, muffins and tarts).

Mmm, lemon gelato...

Cats and their choice of sleeping spots...

Lily started randomly meowing, with hearts round her. After a quick google, it turned out she was in heat. This is also new to Sims 4. You also have the option of getting your cats spayed/neutered... I haven't got round to that yet.

So, they adopted Olly! And it seems like the two cats got on well! No kittens appeared; I have no idea if this screenshot captured mating or not.

Aside from the usual festivals (Love Day, Harvest Fest, Winter Fest, New Years) you also get random holidays pop up. The first random holiday was Season Premiere Day, which I've not had before. The show was called Game of Llamas (a lot of the books Sims can read have got titles that reference pop culture, eg Lord of the Swings, Darley Porter and the Basement of Shadows by U.K. Englishlady :laughing-rollingyellow:and The Bladder Games, among others).

Both Mark and Julia were working on Love Day, so they had to wait until late to get their traditions in (each holiday has various traditions, and you can get various moodlets depending on how many you complete).

Which expansion packs do you have? I love building houses in the sims 4 (and not really having the mood to actually play rn...) and if you'd like I could make you something :chu:

Expansions: Seasons, Cats and Dogs, City Living, Get to Work.

I also have various game/stuff packs: My First Pet Stuff, Parenthood, Dine Out, Toddler Stuff, Backyard Stuff, Kids Room Stuff, Spooky Stuff, Outdoor Retreat, Cool Kitchen Stuff, Holiday Celebration Stuff.

A house build would be awesome! I'm not much of an architect when it comes to The Sims.  :text-thankyouyellow:

I don't have many of those game/stuff packs, but I'll whip out something! I'll leave enough room for you to add your own things. I always use bb.moveobjects too, and playtest my builds to make sure no sim gets stuck... hahaha. How many bedrooms (and beds) do you want and is there a budget?

The media has its issues, but there are still lots of responsible, serious journalists out there.

I keep getting almost identical conspiracy theories from both my extremely leftist family and the ones who’ve gone very right wing. It’s pretty funny.

The E name discussion was a big hit in our house this morning. It was the “around the table” question of the day.

We decided to come up with a boy and girl name for each letter of the alphabet:

      Easton         Easter

      Ebenezer.    Ebony

      Eckehart.     Ecaterina

      Edison          Edria

      Eegon           Eevonne

      Efraim          Effemia

      Egerton        Egypt

      Ehlyson        Ehlani

      Eilon              Eileen

      Ejnar              Ejulliah

      Ekram            Ekanta

      Ellison             Ellory

      Emmanuel      Ember

      Enoch             Enya

      Eoin                 Eowyn

      Epic.               Epiphany

      Equerry           Equalla

      Erwin               Eralla

      Eston               Esther

      Ethan               Ettalyn

      Euclid               Euphemia

      Everett             Evangeline

      Ewing               Ewalina

      Exton                Exalla

      Eyal                   Eydra

      Ezekiel               Ezlyn

Erica has two associations for me. One is Erika Shupe, and the other is that it was the name of the “Brown Owl” of my Brownie Guides group when I joined. Brown Owl is the traditional name given to the main leader of a Brownie unit here in the UK. I remember she always had her hair in a single long plait down her back.

We use Brown Owl for the main leader in Canada too and Tawny Owl for second in command.

It's the all or nothing, black or white, orcs or Hobbits views. Or as a giant black dog once said, the world is not split into good people and death eaters.

The field of journalism has changed dramatically. But saying "they work for the rich" and are "sellouts" is so juvenile and lacks any sort of understanding of the state of the industry.

Calling people "sellouts" because they took or kept jobs when their peers and colleagues were being laid off is just cruel. It's also not that deep. Not everyone in journalism is into hard-hitting investigative journalism. There are sports writers and sports casters, arts and entertainment, political analysts, anchors, feature writers, food writers, etc. There's a former Attorney General who writes a garden column and occasionally a piece on local politics. I guess he's a "sellout" too, reminding us when to start our peonies and snap peas.

And beyond that, there are still plenty of people blogging and podcasts because they love it, while working their day jobs. Art wants to be a journalist who doesn't "sell out" or "work for the rich?" They can do what thousands of laid off journalists and start blogging. A recent political blog in my state sold for a few million and it brings in around $5 million annually. More in election years. It's a terrible example of journalism and responsibility, but the fact is that someone created it, created content, marketed it, and found readers and advertisers and managed to make money off of it.
