Leif Garrett

i want to thank @violynn that I needed Leif Garret circa 1970 something in my life.

No crushing on him even in the day, but I can appreciate great hair and a fun poppy cover of Runaround Sue.

Leif is indeed on Spotify.  If you see a woman of a certain age singing along with him on her commute tomorrow...it's not me.  Way too dignified for thst.

Oooh someone else liked Jimmy more than Scott!!!! (what about the episode of Facts of Life that he guested on).

Netlfix has Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys mysteries from the 70's.  Naturally they have removed every episode with Shaun Cassidy singing.

I knew David Soul sang.  So does John Schneider from Dukes of Hazard.

Marc Singer, Tight Jeans from V.  I also saw him in 9th grade during English Class in a video tape of Taming of the Shrew.

I completely understand.  That happened to Leif's albums and all his posters.   I think my most embarrassing moment came when my brother caught me singing (using my curling iron as a micriphone, of course) Olivia N John's "Hopelessly Devoted to You" to my supersized Leif Garrett poster,

Interesting choice.  I usually went cordless mic with a hairbrush - technologically advanced!

You guys are mostly too young for my memories -- I moved away to go to college in 1980 and didn't have a tv for several years, so I'm mostly oblivious to anything from the early-to-mid-80s.

But I do remember having a tv again in 1986-7ish and discovering the syndication reruns of "Here Come the Brides", which was the tv version of "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers".  Got totally hooked on that!  Bobby Sherman, squee! (well, superficial squee for him -- I usually tended to find the sidekick to be more my level, or one of the other background players, instead of the main heartthrob character).

Also, Buffy, I couldn't help but notice how much Rex Smith looks like Dean Butler if you replace the '80s feathered hair with a smoother style...

There was also a modern TV series in the 80s (I think) titled Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (although there was only 1 bride) that starred Richard Dean Anderson as the oldest and (sob) River Pheonix as the youngest.

So much to unpack in this!

  1. If we get use of a time machine I will fight you for Jimmy Baio.  But he'll probably pick you because my straight/fine hair couldn't do anything cool in the 70's.
  2. There were more to the episodes than Shaun singing?  Guess I missed that - pre adderall years so even less attention span.
  3. John Schneider aged very well...but Luke Duke will always be the boy I'll defraud in the General Lee.
  4. Speaking of Shakespeare movies from highschool...anyone's school show the version of Romeo and Juliette with Olivia Hussey?  The boys talked about the nipple scene for ages.  That's not why I hate Shakespeare but it didn't help.

We got a film strip of the Olivia Hussey Juliet and not the real movie.

My other teenage tv addiction, with no singing (that I'm aware of, ack) was "Emergency One" with Randy Mantooth and Kevin Tighe.  I found all the reruns on the off-channels that we barely got, so the screen was mostly snow and static, and yet I could not only watch but recognize which episode it was.  Sitting about 2 feet from the tv, of course.  :shifty: :pb_rollseyes:  My mom probably suspects that's why I need glasses today...

Who was into Knots Landing

I loved Knots Landing, we didn't get a vcr until 1988 and then because my parents were renovating the house and lived in the garage/loft I lived in the house - I would wake up after taping it and watch it at like 4 in the morning

I wasn't allowed to watch that stuff.  I missed so much glam-trash tv.

LOLLLL!  We've been down this portion of memory lane previously.  I can't remember which FJer it was who did the hairbrush mic and work leotards on top of her head so she could flip the legs back like Marcia (Brady Bunch) flipped her hair back.

The bed was my platform.  The dresser mirror was my audience.  The hair brush was my microphone.  My then-preschool brother may or may not have been forced to play the guitar on a tennis racquet to accompany me...

This was before my time and they didn't play it in reruns much but one of my elder sisters was crazy about the first run of 7 brides.

Bobby Sherman?  If she had her way as a kid he would be my brother in law today.  She won't admit it but mention his name around her...her eyes go a little dreamy.

I think I am probably glad I never knew of this before.  Maybe.  On the other hand, might investigate...

My crushes were: Donny Osmond, Michael Jackson, and David Cassidy.

@samira_catlover, back in the day, one of the sugary breakfast cereals had a Bobby Sherman record that you could cut out of the back of the box and actually play on a turntable.  I kept that one for a while.

Erik Estrada was also easy on the eyes of a young pre-teen.

If Dean Butler had a similar package to Mr. Smith ....no wonder Nellie and Laura fought over him.

The above poster wasn't me, but describes my performances perfectly.  I had a window in my room that opened out onto the second floor balcony - it was the perfect set-up for my concert stage in the evenings.  I sang all the Grease album, Prince's Dirty Mind, and KISS ( quietly ofc) to my audience of trees.

It's raining...on prom night...my hair is a mess...

it's wilting...the quilting...on my Maidenform...

mascara flows..right down my nose...because of the storm...

No - i never sang the Grease sound track to an audience of stuffed animals, why do you ask.

And I had no idea that Maidenform line was about a padded bra until years later.

I actually shouldn't repeat things I just read somewhere and can't remember.  I heard that - somewhere here I think, but I have no sources.

When I was a kid, my mom had a huge crush on Tom Selleck in "Magnum PI". I think that turned me off men's short-shorts for all time. Why were men so hairy back then???

My dad kept some of his 80s shorty shorts well into the 1990s. Teenage me was mortified if he wore them out of the house.

I do like shorter shorts for men. Like mid-thigh. When men wear huge long cargo shorts, they completely obscure their legs. Now that’s modesty. You can’t see anything. So nicely fitting shorts that go to mid-thigh are visually more pleasing.

I HATE those ugly cargo shorts and the long board shorts on everyone. People should wear what they like, but men's wear in rural areas is so sloppy and gross.  They are so afraid of being fashionable that they look uncomfortable and usually kind of dirty.

I like men who work out and don't care that their shorts are short, because it's easier to run fast in short shorts. Not men who drive around mocking men who work out for being (insert derogatory term for women of choice here). Also let me see some calf muscle kthanksbye
