Picture of the Day ~ 02.25.16

I haven't felt much like posting picture of the day entries recently for some reason, but my husband just scanned this one for me and I really like how it turned out so was motivated to post today.

I did this one with prismacolor premier colored pencils.  I did use blending with the big flowers.  The rest is just plain old coloring.

Very cool. I especially love the blending.  I went shopping a couple of days ago with the intention of picking up a package of Prismacolors. Well once I picked my jaw up off the floor after seeing the price of those puppies, I had to settle for a much cheaper brand (Artist Loft). And now I'm disappointed with my pencils as the colours are too dull for my liking and I have to sharpen them constantly so I don't think they'll last too long. I did spring for an almost $5 Prismacolor blending pencil and have been trying it with my yucky new pencils. I'm not sure if it's my lack of skill with it or the fault of my other pencils but I'm not getting anything resembling nice. There's probably a technique to it that I'm not aware of. Oh well, at least this neverending winter is giving me plenty of time to practice.

I picked up a set of artist's loft brand to keep in the car with my little clipboard and on the go coloring books.  I haven't used them much, but I do feel they are quite a hard lead and probably won't lend to blending very well.

If you are looking for a cheaper brand that will blend nicely, I would try crazee art or rose art.  They are both a softer lead.   The softer the lead, the better the blending/layering.   I actually find the prismacolor premier pencils to be a little too soft for most of the stuff I do.   I have pretty much started holding those back for areas that I want to blend.

An alternative to using a blender pencil is using a white colored pencil.  That might be a better option for the artist's loft since they have such hard lead.

If you keep an eye on amazon, they routinely have sales on prismacolor pencils.  I picked up my set of 48 for $40, I believe.  It was more than half price which is the only reason I got them.   $90 for 48 pencils is too rich for my blood when I'm just coloring in coloring books.

On the skull?  I always leave skulls white on the sugar skulls.  I recently saw a few from that fb coloring group I joined where the skull was actually colored in and they looked better than I thought a colored in skull would look.

I'm going to have to try coloring one in one of these days.  If I colored the skull, I think I would leave the background white to give some contrast.

Thanks for the info. I had no idea about the hardness of the lead thing. Definitely explains my inability to blend. I'll try the white pencil to see how that works. And yeah, the price of the prismacolours was over $100 here in Canada. I haven't seen the other brands you mentioned but I'll keep my eyes on amazon though my husband might freak if I bring even more pencils into the house!!!

CraZ Art can be found in such high brown places as Wal Mart.

You are probably correct - as usual, it's about the money and the power. Jesus is a very distant third, if He is in the running at all.

Well now. Who is going to take one for the team and compare it to the original?

      Nose goes.

Michael Pearl is the cult leader and he will feel the need to pontificate on some bizarre and arcane reasoning when the truth is likely much more logical: he wants to keep the money and the power and the esteem and allowing for occasional divorce makes all that possible. We have looney relatives on both sides of the political spectrum but the place they overlap is a desire to buy raw milk and organic foods.

OMG this is so funny you guys mention the raw milk thing, because as a homeschooling fundie kid in the 90s there ended up being a black market/raw milk ring that operated through the local library (small town). We would collect giant jars of raw unpasteurized milk from the fridge there (deposited from a local farm). It was an open secret advertised by word of mouth in the fundie homeschool community.

I loved skimming off ladles filled with cream from the top and using it in the baking I did for the family. Looking back, I'm just glad none of us got seriously ill.  But since this was before the internet really took hold it shows how longstanding these beliefs really are.

I think the fact that the bont kids post things all the time about their dad and not their mom perhaps reflects negatively on their relationship with their dad. They feel more secure with their mom and don’t have to post praising Instagram posts to get her love and attention. I see the posts about their dad as a way to get positive attention from him (and perhaps keep away negative attention). It’s like they are trying too hard for marlins approval

They have been raised to worship their father, not their mother. There is a disturbing picture where Marlin is sitting in the middle and all his kids and wife and around him, adoring him like an idol. At least, Duggars or Bates mothers had the spotlight, were the bee queens (not that I envy their position!), but Bontragers don't give wives that special treatment.

Based on the quote posted by @TrueRebel1, I'm going to say her parents have changed their ideas on divorce FOR THEIR DAUGHTER already but of course won't preach it publicly. Michael Pearl is the cult leader and he will feel the need to pontificate on some bizarre and arcane reasoning when the truth is likely much more logical: he wants to keep the money and the power and the esteem and allowing for occasional divorce makes all that possible. Well duh. All of it is cruel.

WTF does the following even mean?

She must be functionally illiterate. Even considering her (and her parents') belief in "rules for thee but not for me," does she even read what she writes? CTBHM was first published in 2004 -- the year she & James got married. IOW, the book was written in this century, the 21st century.

I'm laughing at your summary. Because yeah. Apparently 2004 was the time for marrying and 2023 the time for divorcing. Women saved their marriages and now women are saved by fleeing their marriages. All ordained by the unchanging Bible.

      Nothing to see here, people.
