Shading ~ Colored Pencils & Markers

Curious

A while back when looking at the coloring stuff available at Wal-Mart, I discovered a couple kits designed for kids regarding shading with colored pencils and markers.  They were $5 each, IIRC, so I picked up both and figured if they were for kids it would be technique I could manage ;)

This is the colored pencil one that I did when I first got the kits.   They come with 15 pages to color and colored pencils labeled in each "set."  There is a light, medium and dark for each color set.

Since these are made for children, they are not exactly sophisticated designs, but you can get the idea.

So the idea is that the light is from the corner up there in the left and you shade based on that.  You can see the letters since I don't press down all that hard when coloring.

When light shines on something it has a light, medium and dark side.  It will also cast a shadow.  In the pages they give you, the areas are very clearly delineated, so blending is not really possible.  The idea is easy to understand with these pages, but they don't look as good as it would with blending and the areas not so obviously marked out.

The shading pretty much works like you would expect.  Things the light hits directly are the lightest and the areas that are opposite the light sides are dark sides.  The area between those two is the middle.  Then there is a separate shadow that is cast on the background.

You can see on the cattails that there is no dark side because the light all of area to some degree.

I was going to make separate posts for colored pencils and markers, but after some thought since the concept is the same with both that isn't really necessary.   Here is the marker page I did to test it out.

On this page you can see there is not only a dark side on the horse, but there are also several areas that have shadows.  The base of the tail, the top of the back leg and the base of the mane.  Then the horse casts a shadow on the grass, as well.

That's a really interesting kit.  Did it come with the colors, too?  I feel like if I tried shading on my own attempting to use my own judgement, I would screw it up somehow.

They both did come with a set of markers/colored pencils.  They are the short ones like the pipsqueaks.   Each color has a set of light, medium and dark colors.  So you can just pick your color scheme and they are already labeled so you can learn what shades work well.

I have searched for them several times online so I could post a link, but I can't find them anywhere.  I found tons of info on the trademark, but not the actual products.   They are by the company ArtSkills and they are called Color Shaders.  There is one for each for markers, crayons and colored pencils.

While aimed and children, I did find them helpful between the instruction booklet and the provided pages.   For me, it helps me to show what areas the light falls on in terms of ligh/ medium and dark areas.

I think it was definitely worth the $10 investment, but you could get by with just the markers or the colored pencils, I think.   I got both because I wasn't sure they were the same.

She talked about how the little children were taking bread from the pantry and putting it in there. So maybe it was clean when it came home but then the food got in it?

I think she just lied.  She didn't want to admit that she hadn't even opened the cabinet and cleaned it out so she blamed it on the boys.  They'd have no reason to put bread in there and, honestly, it didn't look like bread crumbs.  Abbie was so excited over her latest ugly find that it hadn't occurred to her to clean it up first.

I think the little boys just get up to lots of shenanigans because Braggie refuses to supervise them.

I think with all of Josh’s issues, the families still in AR, for the most part, have hunkered down and are protecting their own family’s privacy. The less they expose themselves, the less pushback and snark they receive.

Which of course is a smart move in my opinion.

People on Reddit think Joy wasn't there, which is understandable since she went through something similar. Going to something like that would probably just bring all that pain back up.

RE: number of c-sections - I've heard of women in Europe being told 2 only; my friend's parents argued that Americans do more and their doctor okayed four. Women in US 4 only. But have met women who have had 5 sections. Two women I know were told at their last c-section (3rd and 5th) that their uterus was at the point of rupture and advised them to not have any more pregnancies. My point is it's very individual and a doctors should consider individual circumstances.
