About this blog

Because I don't opine nearly enough elsewhere.  Actually this is a weird little repository for things that amuse me...which don't always amuse other people but I'm okay with that.

Leif Garrett

i want to thank @violynn that I needed Leif Garret circa 1970 something in my life.   No crushing on him even in the day, but I can appreciate great hair and a fun poppy cover of Runaround Sue. Leif is indeed on Spotify.  If you see a woman of a certain age singing along with him on her commute tomorrow...it's not me.  Way too dignified for thst.

Ham..

I hate it.  Why is this a food? although I would eat this kind I guess...if I didn't have to wear the hat. .

Maudlin and sappy- Don't bother reading...I'm in a mood...

Something from Miss Manners' Guide to Rearing Perfect Children that's always stayed with me.  Just looked it up because I didn't want to bungle the quote above. Simplistic - but there is something to it, IMO.  My parents were far from perfect but they've been gone for over 20 years now and while sure, I can recount their mistakes (and there were some big ones) by far the over arching theme of my relationship with them is that I was loved. I feel kind of guilty for typing this as I love

Stuff I don't understand...

There are a lot of things I don't understand about the fundy mindset, but far and away the one thing I most want an answer to is how this belief system can override one of the most primal human instincts...to protect your child. You teach girls blind submission and you increase their risk of being victims of abuse by orders of magnitude...and who have no idea how strong and resourceful they can be even without an umbrella of protection. You teach boys that they are at the mercy of thei

Striped Ice Cream...

I'm loving @Maggie Mae doing recaps of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and I've been thinking about the poverty depicted in the book.  It didn't really resonate with me as a kid, likely because in fantasy books it's easy to chalk everything up to exaggeration as things are never as bad, or as good, as they appear. Striped Ice Cream by Joan M Lexau was different for me.  I read that in second grade and four decades later I can still remember the emotional impact of that book.  As with all

It's not just about the days people...there are other measurements of time...

I have been derelict in not keeping up with the months as well - celebrated across our fine land.  So to catch everyone up on what we've missed March is: National Caffeine Awareness Month National Celery Month National Cheerleading Safety Month  National Craft Month National Credit Education Month National Flour Month National Frozen Food Month National Noodle Month National Peanut Month National Sauce Month Nationa

We've missed some holidays...

I've been behind on posting the holidays because...I get bored and find other mindless things to amuse me.  So a quick catch-up: March 20th - National Ravioli Day March 21st - National Common Courtesy and French Bread Days March 22nd - National Bavarian Crepes and National Goof Off Day (so like every day, sans crepes?) March 23rd - ooh - big day - needs bullet points National Chia Day   National Near Miss Day   N

So lent is over...

I believe at some points I tried to give up negativity and bitching about people, my life, and basically the myriad of annoyances that bombard me whenever I get out of bed. But as I mentioned...Lent is over. But the good news is.. .

That's butter lamb to us English speakers.  I admit I buy mine from the Polish market and my goal is to one year get it out of the package without breaking or swearing. If I really loved my family I'd hand craft this...but instead I'll just be impressed by those who do. Something seemed to have gone terribly awry in the life of this butter lamb...

Members of the Octopod family that won't cause carnage...

I made a comment in response to @Maggie Mae on my last post detailing some of the horrors of the giant squid.  Those who know me weren't surprised - I work those facts into a surprising number of conversations. But there are adorable members of the octopod family that would never eat you alive.  Let's meet them... The Dumbo Octopus The Piglet Squid I wouldn't think 15 seconds of sweet fellowship would warrant going to the trouble of assembling a group.

tm Dave Barry on the title.  Just some thoughts that passed through my head today... I hate my master bathroom so much it's like an abusive relationship. I don't know why tub treads are marketed for people with kids.  They are the perfect solution for everyone who loves baths. I hate the color beige Vertical blinds were designed by a committee of demons I have no idea what my style of kitchen sink is called Why does the igniter on my stove click when the

Happy St. Patrick's Day

No interesting National Days today except for St. Paddy's Day and Corned Beef and Cabbage Day (someone was phoned that one in.) So here's a tip from this plastic paddy... Huge stock pot and cook your corned beef low and slow*.  Toward the end toss in the potatoes and when those are halfway done, the cabbage.  Flavors the veg from cooking in the same water and only have to wash one pot.   Or you could do this for di

And in other news...

I know - the current fizzy shit blizzard (CC DeVilletm) has captured the attention of many - so much so that we've missed some important world happenings: Yesterday was not only national pi day but also: National Learn About Butterflies Day Some butterflies have ears on their wings They taste with their feet They cannot fly if it's under 55 degrees

I have hidden the patron saints under spoilers because I am not going to force my religion on you...I leave the proselytizing to the fundies.  Today is National Worship of Tools Day -  Patron Saint:   It is also National Oatmeal Nut Waffles Day which is an abomination in the eyes of civilized people everywhere.   Patron Saint waffle purists:

THIS is a real holiday!

I can't believe I blew my 100th post on Pebbles Flintstone when this is the real holiday today... Let no FJ dog go treatless today!   In honor of this day I'm going to link my two go-to recipes for dog treats (only one of which is a biscuit, but I think the spirit of the holiday embraces all doggie noms!) http://sallysbakingaddiction.com/2013/10/23/homemade-peanut-butter-dog-treats/

Is anyone here from Moore County, NC?  I hope they catch the domestic terrorists that shot up the power substations.  All to stop a drag show!  Throw the fuckers in jail.

What do people do in the Sonoran desert? I've hiked the hikes I wanted to do. Seems like all that is left is golf, shopping at chains that exist everywhere, and stuff I've done. Oh and eating. I can only eat so many times a day. It's too cold to rent a paddleboard or swim.

First snow storm of the season hit today. It got windy tonight, and we lost power. Somehow this continues to be a shock to PSE. Why they refuse to upgrade the infrastructure or do something so that 10s of thousands of people don’t lose power and heat literally every time it’s windy, I do not understand. We live in the Pacific Northwest. It gets windy!

Nebraska's new football coach is an evangelical bullshit artist who participates in "Man Up Ministries" conferences in the off season. Their motto is "Fighting for Biblical Manhood". Excuse me while I go vomit.
