About this blog

Because I don't opine nearly enough elsewhere.  Actually this is a weird little repository for things that amuse me...which don't always amuse other people but I'm okay with that.

The Surreal Life, Episode 6: Blind Date for Brande

Brande needs a man, and the Surreal Life crew head out to find one for her. Will the one she picks be a prince or a frog? Let's just say she's still waiting for a good man. Hey, the way Corey is behaving towards his fiancé, he may soon be available again.    Can I make one plea before I start this week's recap? Nike, PLEASE stop with the epic commercials. It took me less time to read The Iliad than to watch that woman run through the streets in a quest for a pretzel readily available in t

The Surreal Life, Episode 5: Tears of Anger, Tears of Pain

The seven ex-celebs are off to Vegas, and tempers flare up early. But then they dance, some see male strippers, some meet "gangstas" in a burger joint, and it's time to head home for church. Yes, church. Tears flow again in the church, but you'll have to read on to find out why.    Yawn, stretch... our sleepyheads are waking up for yet another exciting episode! Various scenes of morning activity including more tooth brushing shots, this time it's Manny and he's far calmer than Corey while

The Surreal Life, Episode 4: The Vince Neil Show

The ex-celebs have to put on a talent show. This may be difficult for some of them. Vince Neil (right) isn’t thrilled with the idea but he goes along and ends up being the star of the show – shows, really, both the talent show and The Surreal Life.    Here we are to discuss the fourth installment of The Vince Neil Show! Errrr, I mean, The Surreal Life. (OK, it’s really the third show, but remember that WB considered the first hour-long show to be two episodes.) This guy is logging more ca

The Surreal Life, Episode 3: Surreal Camping

This is season 1 - which I probably should have posted first.  (I can't sleep so this is what I'm choosing to do instead...I'm not a productive person this week) I didn't start covering this season until episode three...so that's where we begin.  The case is Jerri Manthey (Survivor Outback), Vince Neill (Motley Crue, although that goes without saying), Corey Feldman (the one who wasn't Corey Haim), Emannual Lewis (Webster), MC Hammer (giant pants fame), Brande Roderick (Baywatch), and Gabri

the end - sorry

We are skipping episode 5 and 6 which was the finale because for reasons I no longer recall someone filled in for me those weeks and it's not my content to share.  And I'm sure not going to find this crap online to watch it again so TLDR on 5 - celebrities annoying the general public because God forbid someone not notice them for 3 seconds. Sorry - should have checked to make sure I had a whole season before I decided to share life lessons of the sort-of-stars.

The Surreal Life 2, Episode 3: Warming Up to Vanilla Ice

Trishelle is drunk, Tammy Faye is sweet, Traci is vapid, Erik is amusing, and Ron is self-deprecating. No surprises there. But Vanilla… er… Rob is so levelheaded and likable that if we had a Decency Hall Of Fame he would have earned his moment this week.    Every Surreal Life episode this season begins with a “previously on…” segment. Did they do this last year? I don’t recall. I think it would be easier for them to omit the flashback and just do a screen shot with the url for my last rec

The Surreal Life 2, Episode 2: The Vanilla Ice Therapy Hour

We asked Redacted when we could expect her recap of this week's Surreal Life. Here's what she said: You want a recap of this episode? Vanilla Ice really needs professional help. That's it. There's your recap. Oh you want details? Fine, but it will be painful for you to read, but trust me – this will hurt me more than it hurts you. I had to watch this twice. While taking notes. You can't say I didn't warn you.    Before we begin, a couple of ancillary notes that mean nothing to anyone. I w

The Surreal Life 2, Episode 1: Surprises All Around

Six more “celebrities” are thrown together into the Surreal Life house. How will porn star Ron Jeremy and televangelist Tammy Faye Messner get along? How about Vanilla Ice and Erik Estrada? Actually, the big surprises come from Real World’s Trishelle and Baywatch’s Traci Bingham. Read on to find out who is real, who is surreal, and who is just plain diva.    The Surreal Life is back and so are we. How naïve I was in my preview column, assuming Trishelle Cannatella would be this season’s h

Looking Ahead to the Second Surreal Life

Lets take a trip into the past, shall we? The second edition of The Surreal Life begins next month, and redacted has info on all the players plus some of the situations they’ll find themselves in. It’s definitely going to be a wild ride with the likes of Vanilla Ice, Ron Jeremy, Tammy Faye Messner, Erik Estrada, and others!    The Surreal Life will be returning Sunday, January 11, on the WB. It seems like only yesterday we bid a fond farewell to Vince Neil and his supporting cast fro

Do you remember the Surreal Life?

I don't think enough of you do...and that's a tragedy for our nation, much like our inability to learn the metric system or implement the 4 hour work week. I think we all need to learn the important life truths from washed up celebrities (except for the ones I love who were not washed up - just on the show to help others and give me something to write about.) Recapping Season 2 for the benefit of mankind

I am Granny Clampett...

Not seeing the resemblance?  You will after this sadly true story. We moved into this house almost a year ago.  I've always liked the cooktop.   One of the kids who had cleaned the kitchen had dropped part of what we thought was a burner grate and it cracked. shit happens and I was so happy someone cleaned the kitchen without being asked I wasnt even annoyed when my husband said he couldn't find the replacement piece online.  Figured with my Google fu I'd have it ordered in no time.

4 hrs 22 minutes...

Into my vacation until I had to remote in.  Weird little server hiccough which would have taken a few minutes in the office took over half an hour with walking someone though finding the right server in my rack and plugging in the monitor.   KVM fucky due to firmware update I keep forgetting to do so last time I just hooked monitor directly to the server I needed snd forgot to fix before leaving.   But I do think 'please unplug the monitor from server X into server Y' when they are two

Lifehack...

When eating scrambled eggs informally at home (as opposed to eating them with the Queen) use a bowl rather than a plate. sides of the bowl make it much easier to ensure even distribution of ketchup. I don't know how the Queen does it...probably has a royal egg and ketchup smusher on staff. (turned out to me not enough ketchup, but I didn't want to retake pic after I added more since sides of bowl were then messy and I'm clearly too much of a professional breakfast photographer to

I'm failing at relaxing...

I've looked forward to this morning for so long, but I'm still stressed. everyone knows I am only checking email periodically and if they need me they must text or call...otherwise I'll deal when I get back. this was made emphatically clear.  Do not expect me to respond to email. so I haven't checked it and no texts/calls so no emergencies.  But every time I hear my work email chime I physically clench.  I want to check it to put my mind at ease, but I don't want to check it becau

Why is anybody anywhere?

So I pull into the parking lot today at the same time as one of my bosses...after some pleasantries she looks at me and asks... to which I reply... How many people do you know who could come up with a quote from The Miz on the fly like that?   Actually I only know him from The Real World/Road Rules and had no idea I was channeling him until I went in search of an amusing pic.  So that means he's either established some kind of mind control over me (pretty neat trick for someon

We haven't talked about Julia Child lately...

I'm not very focused at the moment - can you tell?   Actually I performed a bit of genius technical wizardry this morning so I'm recuperating from all that effort. (If it takes me 10 minutes, but it saves 5 other people untold hours from their jobs I should be able to call it a day and head home.  No?) Anyway I don't think I've ever had a conversation about Julia Child, but I found this quote that I love SO much I've added it to my vacation to-do list to be able to say this with a stra

Are they out of their minds?

There are articles out there that give you ideas for things to do on your staycation.  The vast majority of them require effort...and leaving my couch.  Not the first time I've felt like an outlier in life - but ffs if I wanted to do stuff I'd go to work.   But I do like to plan and am a list making kind of girl so here is my to do list for day one of my staycation: Strawberry pancakes for breakfast Coffee out of my favorite Hello Kitty cup - not gulped out of a trav

He's everything I'm not, but at least I don't touch the lawnmower...

The latest chapter in the Adventures of Mr. Buffy is simultaneously impressive and super gross: He squatted down to adjust the wheels on the lawnmower and in the process of this very masculine activity grabbed something to steady himself. The exhaust pipe.  Turns out they are very hot.   He did say some very bad words because his hand had a lot more angry blisters on it than it had a few minutes prior but that was it.  No screaming.  No tears. Times like this I'm sure he feel

Sins on my status...virtues on my blog...

Equal time for the 7 virtues.  On a score of 1-10 I give myself... Chastity:  I'm going to go with 5/10 because the old definition included personal hygiene and I do shower regularly. Temperance:  9/10 but not because I want to.  If I let myself off the leash that would be bad for me and society as a whole. Charity:  In the sense of unlimited loving kindness.  9/10 if I gave birth to you or you are an animal.  1/10 if you are a human to whom I didn't give mitochondrial DNA.

What's your flouncing style?

There are as many ways to flounce as there are people who get butthurt over nothing.  What's your flouncing style? Fancy? Aggressive? Glamorous? Classic? Youthful? No fuss? Pithy? Or are you more of a jetsetter kind of flouncer? Do you helpfully offer to help others flounce with you? Here's to flouncers everywhere who don't always get the credit they deserve by making the forum a better place...by leaving. Some tried to eff

Shit my mom taught me...

So blah blah sentiment...what conflicting legacies of wisdom from my couldn't-be-more-diametrically-opposed-if-they-were-coded-that-way parents did I pass onto my own kids? Let's start with Mom: You aren't responsible for every erection created in your honor.  No one can owe another person sexual affection so never do anything you don't want to do.  They'll live.  Don't judge others on the way they speak, not everyone has had your opportunities.  Don't dismiss out of hand what

My uncle just died from COVID. He wasn’t that much older than I am, so I kind of grew up with him. Just ten days ago my mom had been pleading with him to get vaccinated, but he wanted to wait to make sure the shots were really safe. I’m kind of devastated.

I just found out my little bonus kid is in a treatment center on a suicide watch tonight. He and I share a hobby and a couple weeks back he opened up to me that he's severely depressed and was wanting to hurt himself. I let his parents know and thankfully he had also been talking to them. I'm just heartbroken because him being in this center means that his parents had to call 911 and have him admitted and I know that was so hard for them to do. He's a young kid and has his whole life ahead of him but just wants to end it all and I don't know how to help him.

Middle aged woman with mommy issues...but missing her today.
She got so much wrong with me, but she had the best intentions and tried so hard.
She got so much right, too.  I forget that sometimes.  Sometimes I remember and dismiss it out of spite.
“They did the best they could with the tools they had.”  I forgot where I first heard that but I’ve carried it with me like a mantra since my parents passed.   They truly did.  Whatever else was missing, whatever I needed that they couldn’t give, the love was always there.

      Always.
      That’s something.
My confidence in my own abilities.  Faith in my own power.  My own strength.  They gave me that, too.
      That’s also something.
They’re why I’m messed up, but they’re also why I’m okay.

      Shit’s complicated.
She died before I figured out how smart she really was.  Sad thing is I don’t think ever figured that out for herself.
Ignore me - just crying in my car waiting to pick up my son.
