Family Vacation, Day 1

As I may have mentioned before, I am not a morning person. As the kids' summer break from school has gone on, they and I have been going to sleep a bit later and yet later than we should.  Our travel plans wisely took this into account. So, day 1 of our trip did not start early. We got up at about our usual time, and I packed for myself and the 2 kids while my DH swiftly packed for himself. We then travelled about 30 minutes and then stopped for a meal and a full tank of gas. (This is also th

Vacation time!

So, we're going to take a little trip next week. It should be fun, even though it's just a small trip, not a big deal. I'd love to post pictures every day, but it will depend on the Wi-Fi availability. I've used way more data on my new phone than I usually would have on my old phone by this part of the month, but at least I can take pictures again! Our trip doesn't require passports, but I'm reminded of a good quote from Erma Bombeck: Hopefully we'll all be happy, if tired, when we g

Stars in my eyes

I enjoy astronomy, although on a strictly amateur basis. I've never joined an astronomical society or anything, but I enjoyed my Astronomy 101 class so much in college. When I became a mom, I let my subscription to Astronomy Magazine lapse (not enough time or money), but I still love to stop and have a quick look at the night sky whenever I can.  I have loved this poem by Robert Frost since the first time I read it.   Canis Major by Robert Frost The great Overdog, That he

Television

"Television is an invention that permits you to be entertained in your living room by people you wouldn't have in your own home." David Frost I have a love/hate relationship with television, like a lot of people do (I imagine). It's such a great window on the world, but it also presents such a skewed view of the world. Plus, it can be a giant time-sucking vortex, some days. "I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set I go into the other room and read a boo

Character

"Character is what you are in the dark."  Dwight L. Moody I haven't watched either of the "Counting On" shows, but I've read @Buzzard's excellent recaps. It sounds like Derrick Dillard repeated or paraphrased this quote in reference to his brother in law, Josh. I don't know how anyone raised in the circumstances of no real privacy, no solo anything, and no real individual status can find out "what they are in the dark". At least before they move out. "The measure of a man's character

Who a person is

Mark Twain "What a wee little part of a person's life are his acts and his words! His real life is lead in his head, and is known to none but himself. All day long, the mill of his brain is grinding, and his thoughts, not those other things, are his history. These are his life, and they are not written, and cannot be written. Every day would make a whole book of 80,000 words--365 books a year. Biographies are but the clothes and the buttons of a man--the biography of the man himself cannot

I love my sister

For this entry, I'm not copying out anything written. This is a story my sister told me and I hope I remembered it fairly accurately.    Once, there was a woman who was stuck in a flood. She climbed onto the roof of her house and prayed. "Dear God, Please save me from this flood!"  Soon, a man in a boat came by. "Get in and I'll take you to safety!" he yelled. The woman yelled back, "No! I'm waiting for God to save me!" A bit later, an inner tube floated by her. "No," she said to herself, "I

Smug

I had this song stuck in my head a lot while I was reading all 8 parts of the Joshgate thread. Especially the line in the chorus about being weaned on a pickle  !   Smug by Steve Taylor Strike this little pose Chin up in the air Lips together tightly Nostrils in a flare Now look like you care Very nice! Practice in the mirror Brushing back a tear Very sincere A promising career could begin right here at home If you've got that smug... That smug... Chorus: Hey mama hey mama lookee what your l

Youth

Youth by Samuel Ullman      Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.       Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old by a number of years. We

Words, words, words

"The difference between the right word and a similar word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug."           --Mark Twain (Samuel Clements) I actually had a longer thing in mind for my second blog, but I'm tired, and I like this quote. I'm a bit of a word snob or a member of the "grammar police", I guess. I am not flawless, God knows, but I like words. I like to know what they mean, why they mean it, and how to use them well. My mom is my ally. She catches my slips and we talk

Off I go...

"  'Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."              --Abraham Lincoln Excellent advice that I've rarely been able to follow. I lurked on FJ and promised myself I didn't need to be able to post. And here I am: posting, updating my status, commenting on blogs, and now starting my own. What am I thinking? (Sarcastic smile.)  Here's one I used to write in the front of my notebooks in college, especially for the classes with lots of papers to write:

      Went here tonight for dinner

They have a kind of Juicy Lucy called the Blucy - which is a type of Juicy Lucy with blu cheese.  When my mom, sister, brother in law, and niece were up last weekend we went to the 42nd street location in Minneapolis.  Tonight I went to the Como Ave location instead.  Yeah, it hit the spot.
