Is this spring?

When I lived in Iowa the joke was that one wanted to experience all four seasons in one week they just had to live in Iowa for a while.  Sooner or later they would have such a week. Seems to be the case up here in Minnesota as well.  After a stretch with with highs in the 70s to 80s even up as high as 90 it's been fairly cool out the past few days.  Supposed to warm up again over the week and be up around 80 by this weekend.  So far the plant collection seems to be tolerating the cold snap

Supposed to be a hot one tomorrow

Supposed to be a good hot one in the upper Midwest tomorrow.  Here in Minneapolis it's supposed to be up close to 100 tomorrow. In Iowa the various cities are opening up cooling centers and are advising residents to be careful about the heat.  One of the local stations asked how well prepared the Minnesota power grid is for the heat.  In other words Minnesota won't be as fornicated as Abattoir land was or is when extreme weather hits the power grid.

A Hot One in the Midwest

Yeah, it's nice and hot up here in the Midwest.  Right now in Minnesota it's coming up on 8:00pm and it's still in the upper 90s.  It's actually warmer here in Minnesota right now than it is in Iowa. It's supposed to be a bit cooler tomorrow, then it looks like temps will be up in the 90s until Saturday when it's going to be about 78.  Last night I glanced at my Lenovo alarm clock a couple times and it was the middle of the night and it was still in the high 80s. Honest truth

Yeah We're Getting Hammered

And I don't mean hammered as in getting drunk either. NWS is expecting about a foot of snow around here. Right now it's not doing much of anything out.  Just cold and windy.  It'll be a good day to stay in tomorrow and just camp out at home.

More Spring Weather "Fun"

Xcel is still out cleaning things up and more bad weather is expected this evening. They had said earlier that Washburn and 55th had been blocked.  The neighbor's shelter tent that just about went flying off last week during a storm was ruined.  She said it got tipped right over the fence in the wind.  Otherwise she said there was no other damage and I didn't see any other damage.  Had a couple co-workers that had to make alternate arrangements for working today due to power and/or int

MS Outlook

I glanced at Outlook and it said the high was gonna be about 58 tomorrow and 45 Saturday.  Oh nice.  Or would've been nice if I lived in Washington, DC.  Which is where Outlook somehow got it in its head where I was located. In Minneapolis they're saying 16 tomorrow.  Saturday looks to be a bit better with highs projected to be in the 30s.

Today is the 2 Year Anniversary of the Iowa Derecho

Two years ago today Iowa got hit by a derecho Yeah it got really rainy and windy up by Dubuque but there wasn't any damage at the farm.  Nor did we lose power.  Others in the area weren't quite as lucky.  To say nothing of areas like Cedar Rapids or other parts of Iowa that got really hard.  And it was two years ago today that I learned that there was a weather phenomena called derecho.

Cold weather on tap

Yeah it's supposed to be really cold here in the upper midwest over the next few days. For the Twin Cities the NWS is saying mid 30s tomorrow before the temp drops down close to zero Wednesday and Thursday. Brrrrr

Going to be really cold in Iowa

It's supposed to get really cold in Iowa tomorrow, even before any wind chill is factored in. They're saying that once wind chills are factored in the temperatures will feel like more than -30 below zero.  Minnesota is going to be about the same.  With wind chill it'll be down as low as the -40s below zero in some parts of Minnesota. A bunch of places are cancelling school tomorrow in Iowa because of the weather.  Down in Dubuque the public schools are calling off classes.  The

Spring showed up this week

It got up into the 80s yesterday.  We had some storms though and some hail.  Glad my vehicle was in its parking spot in the garage when the storms came through.  For the rest of this week we're supposed to see lows in the upper 50s to highs close to 90 with some storms in the mix.  Got the windows wide open now even though I live under a final approach for MSP.

It's Not Over Yet

Iowa is about to get hit with the winter storm that hit the Rockies not too long ago.  Right now it looks like we're getting several inches of snow over the next couple days.  I cut my job interview trip short and started to head back home, I'll have to do the interview on zoom.  I was looking forward to meeting my potential new employer in person and checking out the town too.  Ugh.  Here in the upper Midwest it always seems like winter has one last blast before giving up and letting sprin

Summer clocked out at the end of her shift

It’s been cooler up here these past few days. And now we have a frost alert coming  Well my plants are pretty much done for so I don’t have to worry about that now.  I hope it stays decent for a while yet   Leaves have definitely started turning up here and I’m having to wear thicker jackets if I rode in the morning or after work. I still need to get a thicker riding coat as I had to throw my old one out last April.

Mother Nature is mean when she drinks

Yeah it's quite cold here in Iowa.  The weather service says it's -8 here now.  That's before wind chill.  With the wind child it feels like -28 out.  It's so cold out I'm getting alerts from GM that the cold might immobilize my vehicle if it's not plugged in.   I wish I could escape to a warm climate right now.

Snow totals

We wound up getting about three inches in the SW Minneapolis area where I'm staying right now.  I talked to my mom this morning for a bit and she said they got a couple inches yesterday.  Down in the Des Moines area where my sister lives they got about a foot of snow.  Even though it snowed pretty much all day yesterday traffic was humming right along up here.  Not like other areas of the country where so much as a dusting is enough to shut down an area.  It's sunny out today up here b

After Part One

Well we survived the first part of the storm.  It's currently -8 here in Minneapolis.  The sun is out right now but the snow is still blowing around. Things are still pretty dicey out there right now and forecasters are saying out in the country there will be whiteout conditions later today and tomorrow. Still planning to head back to Iowa Saturday though.  Just going to give myself a lot of extra time to get there.

Spring briefly appeared today

Nice and warm today up in Minneapolis.  It's close to about 70 degrees up here now.  It was raining out earlier today but it's stopped so I've had the window open for a while today.  First day it's been warm enough to do that. I had the bedroom window open for a while but I decided to close it since if it starts raining suddenly I'm not in a position to move fast to close that window.  I ❤️ my place but of course I could do without being under the final approach for MSP.  Still no

Active New Year's Coming Part 2

It looks like the heavier stuff is going to stay to the south, which now forecasters think may see more than six inches of snow. If today's forecast is accurate then we'll get anywhere from a trace up to four inches of snow tomorrow. Of course in reality it'll be anywhere from nothing up to several feet of snow.  Sometimes they predict a snowpocalypse and nothing happens and sometimes we get caught by surprise.  We picked up a take and bake pizza for tomorrow night and will just have t

Winter Storm Elliott

Over the past week we've had several inches of snow.  It cleared up Sunday but the temperature dropped like a rock these past few days. And we - along with most of the rest of the upper Midwest - are also getting hammered.  Right now one of the local stations is saying we'll get 4 to 8 more inches of snow  Plus blowing snow tomorrow and Friday.  Ugh. It's been snowing pretty steady over the course of the day.  This a photo I took by Target Center leaving work today. If the f

Looks like we’re not getting away so cleanly after all. Looks like we’ll be having some accumulation over the next few days.  Ugh.

After the New Year's Storm

We're in the process of digging ourselves out of the snow.  Dad said we had a little over four inches at the farm yesterday.  Looks like a lot of places here in Iowa did get that six inches the weatherman promised Friday night.  Couple spots even got close to 8 inches.  Brother backed out at the last minute on taking me to church this morning so mom did.  Which caused issues cause they wanted to go to their own church at the same time.  Mom wound up taking me and dad met her at their church

Active New Year's Coming

Looks like this weekend will be snowy in Iowa So we appear to be in the 4 to 7 inch band.  Southern Iowa it looks like they'll get almost a foot.  Of course in reality we'll have anywhere from a trace to 99 inches of snow.  Right now it looks like we'll get hit on Saturday and it'll be clear out on Sunday.

Active Night

Waking up this morning we found several new inches of snow on the ground.  It had already been coming down really hard last night when I got home.  Here's what the non-sharpiefied NWS said about the snowfall totals. So I probably got close to about 8.5 inches as I'm near MSP.  So I won't be doing as much riding.  I might head down and do a few laps in the garage given that my bike is new and I want to ride it a bit.   They're still saying it's going to get up into the 30s an

50th Anniversary of the 1973 Blizzard

My cousin turned 50 years old today.  And over today and the next few days we have the 50th anniversary of one of the worst Iowa blizzards on record.  Something my parents and their siblings talk about even now. As I understand it my mom worked as a nurse at the time and she wound up not being able to go home for a few days because she and dad were pretty much stuck.  She worked at the local Mercy hospital and he was on the farm and they were both stuck where they were.  They had winds of u

Yeah It's Snowing

It was snowing most of the night so the ground was covered this morning. The local NBC station is saying probably 1 to 3 inches throughout Minnesota with about two inches in the Twin Cities. It's not going to be especially heavy but then you got all those idiots out there who forgot how to drive in winter weather.

Midwest Getting Hit by Storms

Both Iowa and Minnesota are getting hit by storms now.  Down in Iowa it's severe thunderstorms complete with tornadoes.  Family and friends are all heading to shelter in eastern Iowa due to the tornado warnings and the like.  Meanwhile up here in Minnesota we're about to get pummeled by more winter weather.  We have a mix of winter storms and blizzards due to hit us tonight into tomorrow.   Most winters I expect winter to have one last blast in late March or early April whether I'm in Iowa
