Worldly Distractions: Community 6.8 - Intro to Recycled Cinema

This sounds Abed-heavy, and when anything is Abed-heavy, well...     We open with a stereotypical ham commercial, featuring a bland housewife in a perfectly immaculate kitchen. The housewife looks and sounds strangely like Britta, despite not being Britta. (We all knew she'd go suburban in the end.) Kind of like "Too Many Cooks", Chang suddenly appears to look creepy at the window, but spouting a ham-related catchphrase instead. Apparently, Chang's catchphrase has

Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 26.18 - The Kids Are All Fight

Yeah, yeah, another Simpsons episode. This week we get to go back in time! Again. To Bart and Lisa's early childhood! Again. It's hard to get enthusiastic this far into the game. Come on, writers, wow me. We actually get real opening credits! Chalkboard: Lisa writes the words, "I will not pay my sister to do my punishment". Bart watches. Lisa plays the harp in the school band this time. The couch gag shows the Simpsons as pegs playing the Game of Life, hitting such squares as "u

Once Upon A Time 420: Lily

He Shoulda Brought a Condom! In the Enchanted Forest (EF) past we learn that: a) the sorcerer is just a cloud of smoke; the apprentice has trapped the author in the book. He can still write stories, but he can’t influence them; and c) Emma and Lily’s fates are entwined. I hope that a) is just a sorcerer-prelude because I’d like to see an actual actor playing the part. We know that has been reversed. And as for c), Emma’s fate is entwined with ABSOLUTELY everyon

Worldly Distractions: Mad Men 7.11 - Time & Life

First of all, the names of the last few episodes have been released - "Lost Horizon", The Milk and Honey Route", and "Person to Person". Feel free to speculate as you will, I'll be in the corner sobbing because I'M NOT READY FOR THIS TO END DAMMIT. Oh yeah, and there's an episode, too. Previously: Sale to McCann, Peggy frets about motherhood, Ken quits, everyone moves to California. Opening credits - ALISON BRIE IS BACK, co-written by Weiner, directed by Jared Harris - now t

Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 8.22 - The Graduation Transmission

Raj and Howard look at models (the miniature flying machines type, not the Campbell or Brinkley type). Penny and Leonard are headed out so that Leonard can give a high school commencement speech. Sheldon, as usual, is worried about stuff that will never happen. They talk about pretty girls and t-shirt cannons, which every sitcom viewer will know never ends well. Opening credits. Penny and Leonard depart on their trip, which will take them to New Jersey (insert tired jokes about orange peopl

Worldly Distractions: Modern Family 6.20 - Knock 'Em Down

Jay is preoccupied with his new Costco picture, feeling like it's missing "sparkle". He vows never to visit Costco again, which will likely horrify devotee Cam. In fact, Jay is bowling with Cam this evening, as a substitute for someone on that bowling team we've never heard of before. It's deadly important because Cam has to beat yet another of his rivals. Gloria, Haley and Mitch (huh?) are going clubbing (what?), which Cam predicts will be extremely boring and end early. Lots of awkward dancing

Worldly Distractions: Community 6.7 - Advanced Safety Features

The Committee is planning an alumni dance, which is going pretty disastrously, since half their alumni appear to be incarcerated. They're also planning a city council meeting, but this has been foiled by Chang's disastrous ineptitude at PowerPoint. Exasperated with them all, Frankie turns to her latest pet project - guerrilla marketing. Specifically, she's worried about its use by rival schools, and wants everyone to be vigilant for examples. Abed, of course, mistakes this for the giant apes. An

Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 26.18 - Peeping Mom

Well, we're back from our month-long hiatus. What fresh hell have Groening and Co. dreamed up for us now? Onward! King Homer climbs up the Empire State Building as we read a title card. The Simpsons start as kernels on a heated couch and pop into shape. Marge goes to a rip-off of Apple to get her broken phone looked at. On the way home, as she is complaining about all the creeps posing as employees, she notices that her neighbourhood has become a scene of destruction. Lou explain

Once Upon A Time 419: Sympathy For The De Vil

You’re Not Looking Well, Dear In this week’s episode, we get Cruella’s backstory, there is woefully little Hook, and Emma seems to be coming down with something. Cruella-rella: Little Cruella—looking like one of those horror-movie children—runs through the woods chased by a Dalmatian and her unpleasant mother. Back home, mommy dearest locks baby Cru in the highest room of the tallest tower. In present-day Storybrooke, Cru runs into Mal (almost literally). Mal is un

Worldly Distractions: Mad Men 7.10 - The Forecast

After a couple of strange plot choices, many fans are suggesting that it would be good for Mad Men to go back to the old stalwarts. But do Mad Men fans know what's good for them? Of course not. Let's see what Matthew Weiner is going to confuse us with this week! Previously on: Peggy and Pima, Roger pitches a cookie ad, Joan rejects Bob Benson, and Sally tells Don she loves him (SALLY'S BACK). Don stands in his empty apartment. Opening credits, Matthew Weiner co-writes (I'm sure h

Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 8.21 - The Communication Deterioration

Sheldon has decided to write children's songs for the benefit of science ("and James Clark Maxwell was his name-o"). He wants to bring Beyonce in on the project, but unfortunately none of his friends know her. Raj has launched on a new project having to do with finding alien life. Leonard puts forth the idea that they've already found it, at their table. Raj enlists the help of his friends in finding a cross-galactic communication system. In the end, Leonard is chosen to join the team, because h

Worldly Distractions: Community 6.6 - Basic Email Security

Huh. Community is produced by Sony. Gee, I wonder where this is going. The Dean finds something unusual with his email, and enlists Elroy to help. Apparently, EliteFleet69 has "owned" the Dean's computer. Elroy immediately recognizes trouble. He announces to the study group, gravely, that the school has been hacked. The Dean keeps getting in the way, so Elroy sends him on a pointless mission, which he figures out before he's halfway down the hall. The hackers demand that Greendale c

Worldly Distractions: Mad Men 7.9 - New Business

Well, we're back. This is a day late because I was out of town. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that my cousin, a French-Canadian actress just like Jessica Pare, appeared in this episode! She was also the voice of Lisbeth Salander in the English dub of the Swedish film, so I think I need to visit her more often. See if you can spot her (I might put some subtle hints in the review). In the meantime, let's see what's up for Don Draper and Crew this week! Previously on: Lou is a cu

Once Upon A Time 418: Heart of Gold

Rockin’ Robin and a Newly-Made Marion Since this promises to be very hectic week for me, I’m going to have to do an abbreviated recap this episode.  In my favorite line from this or any other episode from this show, the Author tells Gold—to his face—that he is “the biggest pain in the ass I’ve had the displeasure of writing about.†Succinct. Letting the insult roll off his back, Gold takes him back to evil HQ to get started on those happy endings. We flashback to

Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 8.20 - The Fortification Implementation

Raj and Howard argue over the pronunciation of GIF (for the record, I'm Team Jif). Sheldon is bitter because he's not invited to a seminar with Richard Feynman, and hey, I'd be pissed at that too. His friends try to comfort him. They're not very good at it. Opening credits. Raj brings Howard and Bernadette some Girl Scout Cookies. Howard reports that his lawyer found the long-lost Mr. Wolowitz, who signed over the house without Howard ever having to meet him. However, Raj thinks that

Worldly Distractions: Community 6.5 - Laws of Robotics and Party Rights

You know, I totally selected my graduate school today and I'm happy with it, but wouldn't you guys trade it all to go to school with these guys instead? Everyone's waiting for something to happen, and the Dean accidentally says something racist, but Elroy is too busy being a nominal computer genius to notice. As the Dean digs himself further into that particular hole, Britta proposes that they have a post-midterms party. Even though half of them aren't even students anymore. Annie obj

Worldly Distractions: Modern Family 6.19 - Grill, Interrupted

I feel from the title that this is going to be a Phil showcase. And I can always get behind a Phil Dunphy extravaganza. So let's see what they have to show us. Phil gets a phone call that Jay's grill was delivered, and he has been enlisted to help keep it a surprise. Lots of jokes about his pathetic crush on Gloria. Alex gets much more momentous news - she's in at CalTech, I assume so she can conveniently live at home next season, though there is no child on television who needs to le

Worldly Distractions: Mad Men 7.8 - Severance

This is a message for the faithful. He is Risen! ...er, Don Draper, that is. Previously on: big merger, everyone makes money. Peggy cries. Ken has one eye and Joan feels unappreciated. Megan and Don are splits. The episode is in memory of director Mike Nichols. THE ICONIC OPENING CREDITS I AM CRYING YOU GUYS. Everyone appears to be back, including the Betty Draper crew. This is awesome. Directed by Hornbacher, in case you are wondering. Don hangs out with a woman in a mink c

Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 8.19 - The Skywalker Incursion

Well, that was a long hiatus. Too long, one might say. So let's kick off Easter Weekend with another installment of the Nerd Saga, which is how I choose to see it from now on. My best guess - Sheldon and Leonard look for jobs on the new Star Wars movie? Sheldon and Leonard are about to give a lecture at Berkeley, where Sheldon hopes to win the graduate students over with a series of insulting jokes. Despite his usual fears of new experiences, Sheldon is quite excited for the trip. He'

Worldly Distractions: Community 6.4 - Queer Studies and Advanced Waxing

For being into Season Six with only half the original cast left, we're actually doing pretty well. The series still has a fair amount of quirk, and the jokes fly pretty fast. Though nothing can top "Pocket Full of Hawthornes", I'm intrigued by another LGBT-based episode. But who does it concern? We shall find out. Annie helps Chang rehearse for what appears to be an audition for The Karate Kid (for the role of Daniel, you racist). Hey, why has no one in the history of this show besi

Once Upon A Time 417: Best Laid Plans

It’s Curtains for Our Heroes ……But we’ll get to that. In the meantime, the Charmings borrow Belle’s stupid, we find out how Cru and Ur ended up in New York and, in a show that basically just pushes the Disney product, the Disney Company gives itself another plug. In the Enchanted Forest (EF) past, the Charmings determine their child’s good/evil destiny by touching a unicorn horn, which is totally not a bawdy euphemism. Worldly Distractions: Modern Family 6.18 - Spring Break

WOOO SPRING BREAK! YEAH! HOES AND LIQUOR AND BEACHES! WOOOT! I'm just going to be incoherent throughout the episode, since we all know Arrested Development did it better. In fact, it starts out pretty lame, with no-talent Luke questioning why his sisters spend so much time online. (Nolan Gould, I love you, but you need to look into being an accountant or something.) Alex is supposed to hear back about college admissions, and is behaving like she's sitting on a wasp's nest. (Oh,

Worldly Distractions: Community 6.3 - Basic Crisis Room Decorum

After last week's perfectly suitable beginning, we're ready to get into the real meat of the season. So how is this new group going to function? Let's find out. Checking her to-do list, Annie sees something so terrifying that she immediately gets the committee on the phone for an emergency meeting. Their texts appear in mid-air. Is this the new way we're representing texts now, or are we in for a House of Cards parody? Because I'm sincerely hoping for the latter. We learn that two t

Once Upon A Time 416: Poor Unfortunate Soul

I’m Distracted, But Not By The Sirens In the Enchanted Forest (EF) past, it’s a dark and foggy night on the Jolly Roger. We learn that Hook has a very long-range plan wherein he has become Pan’s delivery boy so that Pan will eventually tell Hook how to defeat Rumple. (So maybe they’re in Neverland? I can’t tell.) A mermaid’s song entrances the crew and The Jolly Roger comes very close to a Titanic situation. Hook avoids the danger thanks to some very deft one-handed maneuvering

Worldly Distractions: Girls 4.10 - Home Birth

So yeah, apparently this is the season finale. That surprises me - everyone knows that a civilized American series has thirteen. (A British series is automatically civilized, and a Scandinavian series doesn't care.) Anyway, this has been a weird, disjointed series of episodes, and I'm wondering if this finale will bring it into better cohesion. Knowing Dunham's usual style, probably not. At the very least, seeing as this episode's title heavily implies that Adam's sister will be present, we are

Wishing I had a dollar for every time I burped on my back porch after dark and set off a neighbor's dog. The best part is that I'm sure everyone think it's my BF and not me, because it's surely not possible such a huge noise could come out of my body.
