Once Upon A Time, Episode 404: The Apprentice

A Sweeping Saga, a Brainless Buccaneer, and Lots and Lots of Wardrobe Malfunctions Hey all! This week’s episode finally branches out into non-Frozen territory. The show begins “a long time ago†with an old, Dumbledory-type guy sweeping. The wind shifts and Dumbledore immediately knows who’s come to visit. He takes out his sword and greets the Dark One (the pre-Rumple Dark One). The Dark One’s all “hey, you’re not the sorcerer.†And Dumbledore’s all, “No, I’m his ap

Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 26.4 - Treehouse of Horror XXV

Well, it's that time of year again! Perhaps the only episode of the season reliably worth checking out, Treehouse of Horror is a glorious celebration of all things creepy, kooky and altogether ooky. Some years have been funnier than others, but in general, the Halloween episodes boast a high quality and a tremendous novelty factor. In fact, it's hard to imagine Halloween without them. So tonight, fun-sized candy bars and mini-bags of chips in hand, let's all get together to mark a quarter-centu

Worldly Distractions: Modern Family 6.4 - Marco Polo

First up, a confession - next week's recaps might be a bit late. I'm going out of town to write the exam I'm supposed to be studying for instead of writing this, so my Sunday and Monday shows could be somewhat behind the eight ball. We'll play it by ear, and at least it's not next spring, when I'll be writing seven shows a week (sweet Jesus, what have I gotten myself into?), so you'll get your recaps in good time. Pinky swear. As you can probably tell, I'm making excuses just to stall the n

Once Upon A Time, Episode 403: Rocky Road

Bitches, Witches, and a Host of Hotties   We open on the Robin Hood family walking down a Storybrooke Street. Robin tells Marion that, though the town might seem strange, she’ll get used to it. Let me give you a piece of advice, Marion. You’ll fit in better if you ditch the rags, head over to the Storybrooke Banana Republic, and find something more “I’m-a-hip-young-mom†and less “I-live-in-a-hovel.†And please take Elsa with you.   Roland wants ice cream and

Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 8.5 - The Focus Attenuation

Hey guys! It's Canadian Thanksgiving, and I'm happy to take a break from crazy relatives and recap some crazy nerds instead. Will Sheldon be insufferable? Will Howard secretly be more awesome than everyone else? And most importantly, will Penny finally drink her weight in white wine? Onward, forth! More scientific chat over lunch. Leonard bemoans one of their failed scientific ideas - something about a walking cell phone charger - which Sheldon suggests he put aside in favour of that

Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 26.3 - Super Franchise Me

You know what The Simpsons is missing? A drinking game! It makes a lot of sense. Every episode is more or less the same these days, and that gives us a great framework under which to make some quirky rules. Sure, there's probably a few dozen floating around the Internet, but there isn't one written by CFK. Play along with me, and maybe between all of us and a couple of bottles of vodka we can scrape up some marginal interest in this episode. We only get a title screen (with Bat-Burns!) be

Worldly Distractions: Downton Abbey 5.4 - Episode Four

I'll let you enjoy this slightly stoned-looking picture of Mary before we jump into Episode Four. Halfway through the season! Which Crawley's going to court scandal but-not-really this week? And how much can Carson disapprove before he explodes? Thomas shows up at lunch looking horrendously upset after his "trip to see his father". Upstairs, the house is abuzz with the news that Rose's father, Shrimpy, is in England. Rose talks about the plight of her refugees, to which Tom is surpr

Once Upon A Time Episode 402: White Out

They Shoulda Brought A Blowtorch We open on Elsa shoplifting her sister’s necklace from Gold’s then walking down the street in her fancy Frozen gown. Everyone else is dressed normally, but the citizens of Storybrooke don’t seem to notice. They also don’t notice when Elsa vows that no one’s going to leave town until she finds Ana, but that’s probably because Elsa is not very good at being sinister. She just looks adorably pouty. In the Enchanted Forest past, Ana arrives at t

Worldly Distractions: Modern Family 6.3 - The Cold

What happens when no one lives up to anyone else's expectations? Modern Family , that's what. Claire goes to work on a Saturday, despite being sick with a cold, which she caught from Mitchell (wait, wasn't that months ago)? It turns out he's passed it all around the family. Claire is confident that it's going to stop with her, which means avoiding everyone else in the household. Opening credits. Phil has received a copy of Cam and Mitch's wedding video, shot by his friend, the

Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 8.4 - The Hook-Up Reverberation

The title seems exciting, but knowing the way these writers tease us, it's probably about Wi-Fi, so don't get your hopes up. I guess we'll find out in the recap... The guys discuss science-y things over lunch. It turns out that Raj is inviting Emily-the-probably-serial-killer to meet his friends tonight, and Sheldon points out that he's probably going to abandon all his friends for his girlfriend. Raj promises he won't. Probably. Opening credits. Howard is still upset about the

Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 26.2 - The Wreck of the Relationship

After mercilessly killing off a character we barely remember last week, where can the Simpsons go next? Why, destroying a relationship, of course! Probably for five minutes, at least. Let's find out which Springfield couple, friendship or family will be torn apart. No opening credits. Couch gag: The family finds Itchy and Scratchy fighting on their couch. Itchy is kicked out, and Scratchy moves in, but proceeds to trash the house. Homer brings back Itchy to kill him, ensuring a happy

Worldly Distractions: Downton Abbey 5.3 - Episode Three

Another Sunday, another episode of Downton (and The Simpsons, but that will be up tomorrow night because CFK's work schedule is punishing and awful). Let's tune in for another riveting hour of English village political blustering. Mary and Handsome Tony have finally done the deed. Dang, I was so sure she would back out due to his complete blandness (see: the bulk of the second half of last review). However, it's still a huge secret, as evidenced by the hide-from-room-service-in-the-b

Once Upon A Time, Season 4, Episode 1: A Tale of Two Sisters

Helping Hands and Feckless Foolishness And we’re baaaack. Anyone who’s seen Frozen knew from last season’s finale that those characters were coming to Storybrooke. (And actually, I hadn’t seen Frozen at the time and I still knew who the girl in the blue dress was, so ubiquitous has Frozen been.) Still I feel like this was a bit much. I know both Once Upon A Time and Frozen are Disney properties and I’m all for a little cross-promotion, but this was overwhelming. Elsa and Ana

Worldly Distractions: Modern Family 6.2 - Do Not Push

I like to think that the title originally ended with "Your Luck, Writers, The Ratings Can Always Fall". Or "...the Remote Button, Because You'll Really Regret This". Or "...Any Further Attempts at Plausibility, Or Nuanced Female Characters". Anyway - on with the episode. Cam and Mitch are taking a family photo, since Lily's jealous that she's not in the big one over the fireplace. However, since Cam is involved, it's more like getting ready for the Oscars. To his frustration, though L

Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 8.3 - The First Pitch Insufficiency

Now that we're settled into the new season (though I might add that no one has stopped complaining about Penny's haircut yet), it's time for the real drama to begin. Or, of course, more half-assed nerd jokes. Howard practices pitching while the guys watch baseball on TV, though Raj tries to make it a "real experience" with the addition of some well-timed heckling. Sheldon is almost as supportive. It turns out that as an astronaut, Howard has been selected to throw out the first pitch

Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 26.1 - Clown in the Dumps

Before we get into the premiere of The Simpsons' twenty-sixth (!) season, a couple of notes. First, the famed character death is supposed to occur this episode, which was moved from last season (and no, it was not Mrs. Krabappel, her untimely demise having been forced by Marcia Wallace's sad passing). Based on the episode's title and the hint last year, I'm guessing it's Rabbi Krustofsky. Second, just in case you've been on Mars lately, the Simpsons-Family Guy crossover is playing tonight,

Worldly Distractions: Downton Abbey 5.2 - Episode Two

We're all caught up with the Crawleys, have launched a couple of love affairs, and have even managed to start a fire. If that's just the premiere, what on earth is the real drama going to look like? One of the new actors appears to be called Tom Cullen, which makes me think of Stephen King's The Stand. "M-O-O-N, that spells complete lack of health and safety standards!" While the Earl and Carson go over the Committee stuff (it's incredibly dull, though Grantham does get schooled fo

Worldly Distractions: Modern Family 6.1 - The Long Honeymoon

One could say that Modern Family has enjoyed a rather long honeymoon of its own, having just broken the record for Most Undeserved Emmys with its fifth straight Best Comedy Series win. Never has a show been so rewarded...so praised...and so mediocre. As we enter the sixth season, one has to ask - is the honeymoon over yet? We can only hope.   As for the actual in-show honeymoon, it appears to be over, as Cam and Mitch are home and excessively lovey-dovey. Cameron is especially

Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 8.2 - The Junior Professor Solution

Double premiere! Psych! So everyone knows how this episode is going to end just from the title, right? Right?   It's takeout night again, with the usual nonsensical hypotheses being discussed. Penny and Bernadette are finding friction over Penny's new job, as Bernadette feels that she isn't preparing enough for this brand-new role. Penny insists that she doesn't want to be some kind of teacher's pet, and is uncharacteristically backed up by the entire group. Opening credits.

Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 8.1 - The Locomotion Interruption

Shows come and go from year to year, and Worldly Distractions reflects this, most noticeably with the loss of a couple of old stalwarts this season. However, the weirdest change in our current lineup is that The Big Bang Theory has switched to Mondays. I'm not entirely sure why this has happened, but I assume it's to replace How I Met Your Mother, Then Had Her Killed Off So I Could Get With Your Aunt. Tune in to tonight's double episode to find out if this one will be equally disappointing

Worldly Distractions: Downton Abbey 5.1 - Episode 1

Aaaand we're back! Now safely relocated to Canada, Worldly Distractions enters its third (second and a half?) season. As we did last year, we begin with Downton Abbey, the frivolous of the frivolous. Everything - that is, internet speculation - hints at a dramatic series premiere. Will Mary find love? (Probably.) Will Edith reconcile her troubled personal life? (Not bloody likely.) And will they kill off the Dowager Countess? (No way - her Maggisty is the main factor behind those sweet, sweet ra

Wishing I had a dollar for every time I burped on my back porch after dark and set off a neighbor's dog. The best part is that I'm sure everyone think it's my BF and not me, because it's surely not possible such a huge noise could come out of my body.
