Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 26.9 - I Won't Be Home for Christmas

It's the annual Simpsons Christmas Episode! Come on, everyone, let's Simpsons Christmas Boogie! We get a snowy title, with the Texan riding past on a sleigh flown by bulls. Chalkboard gag: "Reindeer Meat Does Not Taste Like Chicken". Springfield appears to have turned into the North Pole, though curiously, the nuclear plant/toy workshop seems to be counting down to Orthodox Christmas. Everyone has elf ears, Maggie gives baby Gerald a Christmas gift instead of threatening him, Marge an

Worldly Distractions: Modern Family 6.9 - Strangers In the Night

Once again, I'm pretty sure they've used that title before. So, television is back from its Thanksgiving break, and I'm only slightly behind, having come down with a case of Unexpected Theatre Tickets on Wednesday. That darn entertaining disease! Regardless, I have plenty of snark left in me, so let's get on with it. The Dunphys have been receiving roses in the mail, but don't know who sent them, which is beginning to freak them out. (Also, Haley sounds strangely hoarse for some reaso

Once Upon A Time, November 30, 2014---Fall

A Statement Piece: Jewelry with a Job   After a two-week hiatus, we’re back and the Spell of Shattered Sight is fixin’ to make the townsfolk irritable! Will Henry finally tell his dysfunctional extended family to go f%&k themselves? Will Marion arise from her frozen coma and mount an insurrection against the Merry Men and their boss? Will anyone notice if Emma gets bitchier? Let’s find out! In the Storybrooke forest, the Snow Queen (SQ) relishes her handiwork as sh

Way Back Recap - Veronica Mars, Episode 1.1 Pilot

One of my favorite shows of all time is streaming on Amazon Prime, so I thought I would rewatch and recap for other people who don’t have cable TV and/or don’t keep current with their viewing. I also recently watched the Kickstarter funded Veronica Mars movie, and felt the need to indulge a little. For those who don't know, Veronica Mars is a short lived TV show about a teenage detective. It aired on the WB, but it never felt like a WB drama. With that being said, I will TRY to avoid sp

Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 26.8 - Covercraft

Hello hello, people of the Simpsons universe! In our penultimate episode before the Christmas break, we ponder the nature of music and aging. The show has tackled this subject with aplomb before, so it's not like they're going to screw this one up. Right? ...right? No opening credits. Couch gag: The family bumps into each other en route to the couch, distracted by their smartphones. Moe gets into a fight with his neighbour, King Toot (of the eponymous music store), over du

Worldly Distractions: Modern Family 6.8 - Three Turkeys

Yes, some of you out there might be aware that Americans have this strange little holiday called Black Friday Eve, or as it was known until 2006, Thanksgiving. It involves Pilgrims and Native Americans and football. So how is this going to work as an episode, you ask? I don't know, but we'd better set up some odds. Phil dropping a turkey on a sensitive body part, either his or someone else's - 2-1. Cam screwing up a big football game - 8-1. And quality writing for all the storylines in the episo

Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 8.10 - The Champagne Reflection

CFK emerges from too much work to bring you this week's episode.  I'm up for anything that puts Sheldon in drag. But what kind of convoluted scenario will lead to it? Let's find out. We start with a taping of "Fun With Flags", the one show-within-a-show I wish was real. Seriously, wouldn't you follow this shit religiously? Anyway, it's the final episode, which breaks my tiny heart. Sheldon has found the pressures of work and a social life too difficult to manage, and the show has got

Once Upon A Time, Episodes 408-409: Smash the Mirror

It’s a two-hour extravaganza people! Rumple is on a mission to rule the world and Robin is on a mission to ruin one of the greatest stories of all time. Let’s jump right in! Part 1 A long time ago in Arendelle, the Snow Queen (SQ) is high tailing it on horseback through the woods to bury the magic hat box in a cave. (She appears to be wearing jodhpurs and riding boots underneath her sparkly white dress, so don’t say she’s not practical.) Cut to the Enchanted Forest (EF) w

Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 26.7 - Blazed and Confused

Oh, boy. Is Homer going to get into weed - again? Is Bart going to commit arson - again? Come on, show, try and thrill me. Show opens with Kang and Kodos in a flying saucer, wearing costumes, because they took too long to get dressed and Treehouse of Horror aired already. Cut straight to the couch gag, where the Simpsons' couch turns into a ski lift. The family is brought back dishevelled and injured. The principals of the school district are gathered at SES for the "dance of th

Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 8.9 - The Septum Deviation

Welcome back, folks! We start this week with some sad news - the actress playing Mrs Wolowitz, Carol Ann Susi, has unfortunately passed away. As one of the funnier characters in the show, she was a very memorable performer and will definitely be missed. For tonight, let's watch this episode and have a laugh. I cannot think of a better way to honour all the talents who have worked to bring us this series. Amy and Sheldon play the "celebrity-on-your-forehead" game, which is ruined becau

Worldly Distractions: Modern Family 6.7 - Queer Eyes, Full Heart

Okay, it's late and CFK has to work in the morning, plus CFK really should be working on her graduate school applications instead, but CFK is lazy and if she thinks about the applications for one more minute she'll probably explode, so here goes. Can this review be finished in forty-eight minutes, at midnight PST? Let's find out. So we know from the title that this is going to be a Cam and Mitch episode, which means alternately adorable and cringeworthy. Awesome. They're at a Clean Wa

Once Upon A Time, Episode 407: The Snow Queen

Lean In, Ladies, Lean In! This week, we begin in Arendelle past , where it's  a gorgeous day. Ingrid, Helga, and Gerda (who will grow up to be Elsa and Ana’s aunts and mother) are little kids flying a kite. The kite breaks and the girls fight over who would look prettiest in the yellow ribbon that’s attached to it. The eldest, Ingrid, wins because she’s going to be queen and the other two better get used to losing out to her. A man steps out of the bushes but this doesn’t scare our

Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 26.6 - Simpsorama

Well, if this isn't the season of crossovers! For someone who griped endlessly about "A Star is Burns" because of its crossover with The Critic, Matt Groening seems awfully beholden to his corporate superiors these days. But no matter - let's enjoy this animation combination for what it is. Some of you probably watched this season's crossover with Family Guy, a lark one could describe as amusing but not exactly groundbreaking. Now, welcome to the Simpsons-Futurama crossover, which roughly eight

Worldly Distractions: Downton Abbey 5.8 - Episode Eight

Well, here we are, at the end of Series 5 already. And there's good news - we're already confirmed for Series 6! Now, presumably half the cast will desert and be killed off in the Christmas special, but that's neither here nor there. Everything is set up for a dramatic finale. Will the Downton crew live up to it? Let's find out. I wonder if they'll continue to show Isis and her bum now that the dog has kicked the bucket? Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 8.8 - The Prom Equivalency

Hey guys! Everything the actors have been hinting at suggests that this is going to be a big episode. I'm a little skeptical, due to the marketing machinations of the Hollywood world, but definitely game. Take your bets on whether Penny's pregnant, Howard goes to space again, or Amy and Sheldon finally do it, and let's get going. Over lunch at CalTech, the guys discuss Howard's mom, who is apparently still dating Stuart, which creeps Howard out immensely. Sheldon throws in trivia to k

Once Upon A Time, Episode 406: Family Business

Missing memories, long lost relatives, and a Road Trip!!!   This week, we begin in a picturesque castle on a cliff. There’s a sense of urgency as a woman, who I think we can assume is the queen (and who plays Mr. Selfridge’s wife on Mr. Selfridge) goes through her library grabbing books quickly. Her guards come in to tell her the castle is under attack. Belle comes running in and we realize that the woman is Belle’s mother. We also realize that they have the same skewed prioritie

Worldly Distractions: The Simpsons 26.5 - Opposites A-frack

So, yeah, guess what's happening this week? JANE FONDA. I mean, usually their guest stars are pretty gimmick-y (and they're advertising this one to the hilt), but she is so talented that I'm actually looking forward to this one. It's also her first voice-over performance! Apparently there's supposed to be a plot and stuff, too, but they haven't been so hot on those lately, so let's skip to the important part.   No credits, just a title card. I know, not even a couch gag? Marge ha

Worldly Distractions: Downton Abbey 5.7 - Episode 7

So with two episodes to go, what's happening in the land of Downton? Basically, everyone's headed on a collision course, except the Bateses, who seemed doomed to repeat the same damned story every season or two. What new twists and turns could the Abbey residents be headed for next?   Rosamund arrives from London, where she is met by her mother. Violet has decided that they have to tell Cora the truth - though her courtesy won't extend as far as Robert, due to his maleness. Mrs H

Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 8.7 - The Misinterpretation Agitation

Happy Halloween (tomorrow), and welcome back to Big Bang Thursdays! Yeah, CBS can never make up its mind, what else is new. Let's watch the episode and find out what's scarier - your neighourhood creep, or this year's batch of writers?   Amy, Penny and Bernadette talk about Amy's new research, which has to do with shame. Meanwhile, Bernadette has been chosen as part of California's "50 Sexiest Female Scientists". Amy is horrified at the objectification of women in science, making

Worldly Distractions: Modern Family 6.6 - Halloween 3: Awesomeland

Traditionally, episodes with "3" in the title do not inspire confidence, generally proving to be boring and uninspired, or downright awful. Recall last year's example, How I Met Your Mother's "Slapsgiving 3", which could easily have been called "let's run around slapping each other in yellowface in order to avoid moving forward more than ten minutes in the timeline". Regardless, we shall soldier on together - and remember, drinking your way through an episode with "3" in the title is always

Once Upon A Time, Episode 405: Breaking Glass

Petulant Princesses, Cranky Queens, and a Quiver Full of Questions   Hello, all. Hope everyone had a good week. This week’s title card features the ice bridge that Elsa created in the movie, so it looks like we’re going to be Frozen-heavy yet again. We open with the Snow Queen (SQ) in her Fortress of Solitude waving her hands over a block of ice with such a glazed look on her face it looks like a form of meditation. But the spell is broken when we cut to the Storybrooke

Worldly Distractions: Downton Abbey 5.6 - Episode Six

Gooooooood evening Freejinger! As we settle into the end of the season (will there be a Series Six? Probably), there is a faint hint that we just might get a bit of plot to chew on. The question is, which person will the drama hit first? Let's find out.   Lady Edith gets a telegram, which is presumably Michael inviting her to his sex chalet in Switzerland. She opens it over breakfast and finds out (we learn from Robert telling Cora) that her editor is coming up with news. Dammit,

Worldly Distractions: Modern Family 6.5 - Won't You Be Our Neighbor

It was so tempting to add that extra, civilized "u". Differences in English, it bums me out. My apologies for turning this in a day late (I came down with that mysterious illness known as "unexpected theatre tickets"), and let's move on to the episode ASAP. The Dunphys court a new neighbo(u)r, hopefully the hippie played by Jesse Eisenberg who lived next door to Mitch and Cam. We'll see what transpires. Phil heads out to work, which involves selling their neighbour Jerry's house (yeah

Worldly Distractions: Downton Abbey 5.5 - Episode Five

Back from the Great White North(ern BC) and only a day late with the Downton Recap. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself. Our intrepid family faces yet another week of garden parties, slightly tedious love affairs, and a crushing class system which fosters deep-rooted oppression. All in a day's work. Rosamund comes up from London, where she is served by the heroic First Footman. Rose mentions that a new nudist colony is opening in Essex, and Granny wonders that it might not be terrib

Worldly Distractions: The Big Bang Theory 8.6 - The Expedition Approximation

The nerds are back in their last Monday night appearance this season. I'd say pick a date and stick with it, but since when has consistency been this show's hallmark? Hey-o! Take-out time and everyone's discussing Penny's boring-ass job and all the clothes she has to learn to do it. Howard teases Leonard about all the handsome doctors Penny has to flirt with. Meanwhile, Sheldon is very happy doing dark matter, mostly because he's joined the field and therefore improved it. Raj mentio

Wishing I had a dollar for every time I burped on my back porch after dark and set off a neighbor's dog. The best part is that I'm sure everyone think it's my BF and not me, because it's surely not possible such a huge noise could come out of my body.
