Not at all. In my family, hand-me-downs were gratefully accepted. I got my older cousin’s gorgeous high-end clothes. When my daughter’s best friend hit a major growth spurt, my daughter inherited a new wardrobe.

I imagine all the Maxwells are rather thrifty. Plus they know the skirt was ok (Steve approved) last year for the picture so they may as well use it again.

Sorry FJ catching up. But they went to a fair. They did face painting any everything. OMG. That's fun. We can't have fun now can we?

I'm gonna give the Maxwells a pass on the family photo. Years ago, my sister, brother and I decided to gift my parents with a real family photo session. We'd never had one before and now that there were two grandchildren in the mix, we thought it would be a fun and meaningful present. So we made an appointment with a well-known photographer in NYC and off we went. On the way 1. my then 2 YO daughter threw up all over herself (no backup clothes) 1. my nephew had a case of explosive diarrhea (no backup clothes), 3, my parents got lost, 4. my brother missed the "how to dress" memo…in short, whatever could go wrong, DID go wrong. And to top it all off, we didn't get the photographer we thought we would and the one we did get was a little short on both experience and subject wrangling prowess. In the end, out of nearly 200 shots, we didn't get ONE were everyone was looking at the camera or smiling at the same time or anything that would make a classic family photo. Not one. We did, however, have an absolutely great time (once we got the puking and pooping under control), laughed our heads off and we ended up picking the most ridiculous photo because it was the best representation of the day. We still talk about what a good time we had. So if the Maxwells aren't picture perfect subjects, well…I get it.

What I won't give them a pass on is the quality of the photography. How they managed to have a photo session in what looks like the optimum golden hour and have the photos come out as flat and lifeless looking as they did takes some doing. A few reflectors would have helped tremendously for a start.

In my bitchy list, most of the things I listed were just that - my petty bitchiness.

However, I do think it would take minimal effort to place the families in "units."  Sorry, we call them "units" each time we do a large group photo. I know there is a better word. If they were to hang their photo where people were meeting them for the first time, nobody would know who anybody was. Plus, grouping families together allows the photographer to easily divide them and say something like Okay, Nathan's family - move to your left three steps and we'll take some of just you."

I personally love coordinating clothing for photo sessions but that is a big task and I know if you say "maroon" you are going to get anything from purple to red from different people.

For my fiftieth birthday, my kids each flew in and surprised me for a weekend. They planned a surprised family photo session too. My daughter knew my wardrobe well enough to tell others ahead of time that we could go with shades of purple and blue for the photo and she was right. It worked out pretty well.  Of course we only had seven BUT my granddaughter is fifteen, only wears black and has rainbow hair. So she got to stick it to the man, too, and be her own person for that photo session.  :pb_biggrin:  Maybe Melanie will let her girls do the rainbow hair thing too.  Heh.

regarding the hand-me-downs--no, there's nothing odd about that, but i think the original point was that they were worn in multiple photos.  my take is that it's a matter of personal taste.  if a family likes to display their photos together and is interested in such things, i can see avoiding repeated outfits.  and then some families just don't care.  then too, maybe the kids chose their favorites that just happened to have been worn in last year's photo.  nothing odd for me, but YMMV.

I never got hand-me-downs because I was the oldest girl cousin. But clothes would go from me, to my sister who was two years younger, to our cousin who was four years younger than my sister, to our youngest cousin who was three years younger than her. It was great because a lot of the clothes held up really well, they weren't wasted, and the parents saved a ton of money.

I'm the oldest in my family. I have a younger brother and four male cousins, so we didn't really do hand-me-downs in my family, at least not from me. I think my brother passed a few things down to my cousins though.

We grew up with a lot of hand me downs too. I was the second oldest girl cousin (well, the oldest girl first cousin but my dad's youngest cousin was only 3 years older than me) so the stuff I got was in good shape still. My own kids didn't get much for hand me downs, my oldest is the oldest girl cousin and the oldest child in our group of friends. The my son is 2 years younger than my nephew but they are too close in size for hand me downs and he was the first boy in our group of friends. My youngest gets hand me downs from her big sister and she loves them. She proudly proclaimed the other day that not everyone gets to have their big sister's clothes. Haha! She gets a lot of new clothes too though. Recently, my oldest has become "adult sized" and she now gets hand me downs from some of my friends. She is still rather petite so she really only had one of my friends that hands stuff down to her, but she got a great dress that she wore to a school dance, a halloween costume and a bunch of tshirts.

We did have several neutral outfits that all three kids wore when they were babies/young toddlers.  I don't think I have any family photos taken in hand me down outfits, but I usually just buy new stuff for photos. If I happened to have something that worked and was in good shape I would use it though, if I remember we had it.

I agree. Steve can't give up control like that

No he can’t. The girls think he is the greatest man in the world and no one can measure up to him.

I wish more pants survived my older son in order to pass onto my younger son. My older son is a serial killer of pants. And shoes. He drives me crazy.

Sarah speaks of "when we girls get married" in a comment on the latest post. I thought that was interesting.

She says it's not a hint. Which, I think is even sadder.

She acknowledges they'll likely live out of state - - if the mythical marriage ever happens.

Obviously, she is still hoping and we have all been pretty on spot with our predictions. IF the marriage thing ever happened, the girls would move far away and the Maxwell cult would shrink, thus Steve would lose power, so no girl is ever gonna' get married.

Steveovah would never let those girls worship any man other than himself. Imagine his girls loving another man, changing their last name and being HAPPY.. The horror! Instead they better clean those ceiling fans, eat pasty burritos and sink into depression for the rest of their lives.

Steve and Teri are huge POS, she's as guilty as he is.

Of all the things in Maxhell that deserve shade thrown at them hand me downs (in apparently good condition) isn't one of them (to me).   :confusion-shrug:

Ok.

I am completely disappointed that Chelsy is not in the picture!  I love Chelsy!

Why wouldn't she make the cut?

I mean, seriously?

In OTHER notes, I keep looking at the picture.  AnnaMarie's hair looks gray.  Am I the only one thinking that?  Or darker. . .hmm.

Back to our regularly scheduled observation

WHERE IS CHELSY?

I tried to pass my daughter's hand me downs to my nieces who are a year younger than she. My sister in law preferred different brands (I was usually giving her the nicest outfits, which were Oshkosh and Carters) so when I realized she didn't actually put the clothes on my niece, I stopped wasting the postage to send the big boxes.

I always wanted hand me downs for my daughter but we had no family of the right age. I did have a friend with twin girls who were two years older than my daughter. She always gave one of each item to a mutual friend but never offered me any of the items. I even told her once that if she ever wanted to sell a set of the twins' outgrown clothing, I'd love a chance to buy them, but NOPE.

Another friend and I shared boy clothes really well. Her first boy wore them, then my son wore them, then her second boy got them back. That is when I learned it was practical to invest in name brands for boys clothes. Back then, the Nike clothing held up extremely well and always looked new. Another brand called And One was like that too.  I did buy new clothes for my son too and hand them down to the youngest so she was not the only one investing in our joint boys' wardrobe.

So, yeah; I love hand me downs if they are kept in good condition.

John and Chelsy got a little shout-out on the duggar family fan blog today. I wonder how steve feels about that.

Recently there was mention of "another shower for Chelsy" on the Bontrager family's IG story. I think it took place last weekend and I keep checking their blog to see a recap of this shower. I wonder if the Maxwell women would have driven to Chelsy's home for the occasion.

Another thing regarding the Maxwells and hand-me-downs... It is not easy to find girls' clothes that fit their dress code. It looks like Anna Marie makes at least some of her daughters' outfits, but the ABC girls wear store-bought clothes. I can understand them hanging onto a skirt or dress after one girl outgrows it. It's not as if they can walk into the local department store and find a vast selection of long dresses.

Regarding Chelsy's absence in the family photo, let's just remember that these are people who don't even consider their grandchildren to be "real" family members.

That aside, it's not a surprising choice to me, though I get why some people may think it's weird. My family isn't remotely fundy, but in the same situation (posting a public picture), they would prefer the married/legal family members for the "official" photo. Other pictures including engaged couples, boyfriend/girlfriend/etc. would be taken as well, but would be intended for personal use. I suspect lots of pics including Chelsy were taken, but until the deed is done, she's not a Maxwell.

Overall, I can't bash the picture too much. These people aren't the best photographers, but the finished picture is still better than anything my family has produced in a decade. I think Melanie coordinated herself and her kids as well as she could. It looks like the tartan heart on Bethany's dress is supposed to match the plaid shirts, and the pink was probably meant to coordinate with Ruthanne's dress, but it missed the mark. I suspect Abigail's vivid rose vest was meant to be countered by Elissa's sweater, but due to bad composition (eclipsed by Steve's head and ego), Elissa's outfit isn't visible at all. Melanie herself is perfectly matched. Three other people are wearing brown, almost everyone is wearing denim, and in the "Event Which Some May Call A Shower" post (which seems to be from the same day), she was wearing a plum shirt under the brown jacket. The whole photo would have looked a lot more balanced if Christopher and Nathan had switched shirts, but otherwise, it looks fine to me.

My only snark on the photos is the one labeled 'The Steve and Teri Maxwell family' featuring Steve and Teri and the unmarried kids. I've never seen anything so odd as excluding kids once they are married. So weird. But otherwise I actually think the pictures make nice keepsakes for the families.

I wonder how they are going to handle things for the "family photo" after the boys are married. Even with one getting married off, it is going to look really lopsided with only one remaining boy. When he becomes Man of his home as well, there will be no hiding the spinster sisters.

I love baseball but I'm dreading the new season because the White Sox ownership is THE FUCKING WORST. I watched Dominican League Baseball (Lidom!) over the winter and fell in love with their joy, spirit, and exuberance. The broadcasts were in Spanish and my Spanish is pretty weak but I loved catching phrases and repeating them. Bombe! I'm sad about MLB and Commissioner Idiota's busywork rules. But I love baseball, always and forever.
I guess I don't have a point. Just bitching. Te amo mucho, Lidom!

      Happy International Women's Day!

Humanity may have some work to do, to improve gender equality, but I was glad to hear that France has taken an important step to protect healthcare for women (and people of other genders who can get pregnant).

Feeling ragey this morning. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon in the hope of getting help for an ongoing injury. I went to a (different!!) doctor late last year who completely blew me off. He wouldn't do diagnostic testin, he refused to send me to a specialist, and he just told me to "take it easy" and "take ibuprofen." I'm hopeful for today's appointment but I'm also feeling a SEVERE amount of rage at that doctor from last year!

Well, the rash is back with a vengeance. It never completely cleared up. I saw the derm yesterday and they did another swab and yup, raging infection again, still? It is definitely strep skin infection. I am getting so damn tired and run down from this. Who the f would immagine being hospitalized freaking TWICE for a rash?

My niece is going to be a seat filler at this year's Academy Awards.  Seat fillers are asked to wear tuxedos regardless of sex/gender.  If you see a pretty young woman with very curly hair, it could be my niece.
