Counting on - Season 4, part 3 - Lying but not Laying while camping

Is sleeping in a hammock while camping an actual thing or a Duggar thing? It seems really uncomfortable plus I would get bitten by 100 bugs probably.

I am with Ben on being catious of buying second hand stuff that can't be washed.

Also who was the couple that were holding hands? Gosh I hope they are engaged! Also is hand to foot contact OK under the courtship and engagement rules? First thing I thought of when Austin felt Joy's feet was "feet sex!" :content:

Wasn't Sierra a bridesmaid? If so it makes sense she wouldn't be wedding planner--it's not really possible to do both.

Yes she was.

Yeah I like camping but I'm not sure I would do a hammock in 50 degrees. I guess tents allow too much privacy :my_dodgy:

I thought Sierra got out of the wedding planning business a while back. Or at least scaled it way back.

Counting on - part 4 - OMG is this over yet?

Jana is spending WAY too much time with a cell phone.  We know what that means...

Excuse any ignorance but what makes it suspicious?

Courting J'slaves always spent a ton of time on their cell phones.

@HarleyQuinn I remember Jana saying she had lists on her phone. I’ve also seen her phone at hand throughout the years. I gues it depends on the situation and circumstance they’re in. I haven’t seen the episode yet.

While they were on the river she appeared to be taking a selfie.  Thats definitely grounds for suspicion.

Last season, while the Duggars were "decorating" the guest house Joy spent an awful lot of time in the background on the phone and now we have J'ostin + 1...

Have you had it checked for lead?  It's not as common as it once was, but it's still an issue.

The river rapid scene just seemed like a head injury waiting to happen - going down a pretty active and rocky river on a raft or canoe when you haven't ever done it before isn't a great idea in my opinion. Yeah, I'm a wet blanket, but I live next to a river that people drown in every year because they underestimate the undertow and get sucked in - usually people who have no experience on the river.

Camping is one of those things that can be...uncomfortable...if you haven't had much experience with it.  Not sure that's something I would plan for a bacherlor/bachelorette party that the wedding party might feel obligated to attend since it's not necessarily something everyone would find that fun - especially when it's not that warm outside. Maybe I'm just too old for this as I used to go camping all the time in high school with my friends - now I prefer a bed, roof, plumbing... I probably would've slept in the car.

Good grief. One of the J spawn was channeling the Maxwells, wearing jeans on the river! There are 2 major don'ts in kayaking/rafting attire: jeans and flip flops. I didn't notice any flip flops on the girls, at least, and I was relieved to see that they changed out of their jean skirts.

Where was JD during that trip? It seemed right up his alley, and isn't he supposed to be Austin's best friend? Of course, he's the Duggar son who actually works hard so maybe there was a conflict.

And no parents (even though these are adults) shocked the hell out of me! I really hope someone got some unauthorized hand sex at 3 AM while the snitches were sleeping!

I'm with @ThunderRolls.  I'm too old to enjoy camping anymore.  Maybe glamping.  Also, I had thought I saw Jill at first in the raft and got very concerned but then realized that it wasn't her after all.  I will also say that river rafting in freezing water would not be my idea of fun at my age.  Makes my joints hurt!  lol.  I also wouldn't want to sleep outside in a hammock in the cold.  I did do a rafting trip/camping trip when I was a teen during the colder spring months so clearly age is a part of it.  I think it was smart of Jessa/Ben to sit it out.  I noticed that none of the married couples were there.  Those with kids didn't go because of the kids, JinJer outright said that it wasn't for them.  Sierra probably didn't go because of the kids.

@Flossie lead was a concern of mine too with the pottery.  Those pretty colors can come from the addition of lead.

While Jana on her phone could mean a special friend, she is also mistress of the passwords and I wouldn't be surprised if she was in charge of taking pictures.  I didn't see her take a selfie but I did notice her taking a panoramic picture or video at one point.

Also, I was scrolling through the Duggar IG last night and the picture of Spurge and Izzy on rocking horses from a couple days ago appear to be the thrift store horses.  I was wondering how they would fit into the little house.  Looks like they went to the TTH.  That would help with Bin's germphobia as well.

I'm sure there was much shit talking on their car ride home about this lol

I'd watch the show if it included the family having uncomfortable (to them) experiences and then getting their semi-honest opinions.

A few thoughts:

- Joy and Austin are at a whole new level with pre-wedding PDA in this ep. Her snuggled up next to him on the way to the campsite, prolonged side-hugs, etc. ad nauseum. Part of me wonders if it was Joy taking advantage of no JB and Michelle or other Duggar marrieds being around to judge, since I feel pretty certain none of them would approve but the ones on the trip wouldn't really care. The only fundie I recall being that touchy-feely beyond hand sex is Carlin Bates and her boyfriend (and they aren't even courting yet, but the Bates are a lot different standards-wise these days.)

- This is the first episode where I become distractingly annoyed by Joy's constant "Austin likes me to wear my hair like this" and "Austin wouldn't like my makeup like this" talk. It makes me wonder what their early conversations were like - were they Joy listing things and getting ayes and nays from Austin? It's a lot like Jill's own courtship and engagement, but even moreso. She seems to be incapable of liking anything for herself alone. Whereas Kendra didn't like things but she at least made lip service that it wasn't what she was used to or her own personal style.

- I'm pretty sure the whole discussion between Jessa and Ben re: the stuffed horses was the first time we've seen anything in the ballpark of an argument between a husband and wife on a Duggar show, and it was an interesting dynamic. First, I'm not sure any of the Duggar married women beyond Jessa would have had her way - JB and Michelle talked a good talk about how he goes along with her wishes, but I suspect she would have folded pretty quickly in that discussion. Jill would've put them back immediately and Joy would do the same while making a big deal out of how Austin is so smart and makes such great decisions.

Also, it was interesting how genuinely pained Ben was, and it went beyond being afraid of germs. Jessa was very dismissive of his concerns and I'm pretty sure that he hates that. But it was cool to see how excited Jessa was to get something for her kids that she had enjoyed herself as a kid. I'm not sure that Ben ever quite grasped that.

I think that Ben came from a more normal home, he may not really understand how deprived the J'Slaves were and the few normal things they had really lives on in their hearts and minds.

It seems that they were deprived of so much;  food, personal safety, intellectual stimulation, and attention from their parents which to me consitute a normal childhood.

I can't say I blame Jessa for trying to recreate a rare happy memory.

I'm not sure Joy can form an opinion of her own at this point.  Good grief. I would hate to live my life waiting for someone else to tell me how things should be.

I thought her hair looked pretty up. I wish she had worn it that way for her wedding, rather than the uncombed look she had going on. The same look that Jill had.

This is so true. He really has no idea and Jeremy and Derrick even less. At least Bin was "sort of" in a like-minded family. Think of the horrible crap they ate and wore in the beginning. Think of the stupid story of one sister having to forgive and give other sister her most treasured possession. Think of them having little school lockers to keep stuff in that they were allowed to not share. My kids were in an orphanage in former USSR and had all of that.

@IReallyAmHopewell I have no idea about the material condition in Ben's family home, but wasn't his dad the one who said he himself (the dad!) would molest a sister or daughter if he'd had the chance and if his god didn't forbid it?

Im really annoyed btw by how the family features Turdface more and more again. I want to barf. He has done things that even by their standards (I'm thinking of cheating and watching porn, since apparently incest and molestation are no biggie :my_angry:) are heavy sins/wrongdoings. Would the parents forgive the rest of the siblings "sinning" this easily? What if one of them would be openly use birth control? If someone kisses or even - gasp! - has sex with their partner before marriage, if one of the sons (Joe, please!) publicly states he consider women and men equal and are not going to be a so called headship? What if someone moves towards mainstream Christianity? Should the Duggar children realize they can problably do many things without being ostrasized since Joshley fucked up pretty bad, not to mentiuon damaged their brand!, but is still just as welcome in the TTH as his non-straying siblings?

I think that kind of statement requires some backup as in article, episode, interview information.
