I heard about the shooting in Olathe yesterday.  1 dead, 2 wounded  A man shot at middle eastern looking people in suburban KC.  Turns out the men that looked middle eastern were engineers from Garmin and originally from India.  

In a part of this that seems to rival Florida Man - the guy crossed over into Missouri and told his story to the bartender at Applebees.

A 51-year-old Olathe man was charged Thursday in a Wednesday night shooting at an Olathe bar that left one man dead and two others wounded.

Adam Purinton was drinking at a bar in an Applebee’s in Clinton, Mo., when he was arrested early Thursday, about five hours after the shooting, police said.

The Star has learned that charges were filed early Thursday afternoon.

Johnson County prosecutors would not confirm that, but said they would make a formal announcement at a press conference at 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon with Olathe police and the FBI at Olathe Police Headquarters.

Purinton, a Navy veteran, was booked into the Henry County Jail. After the charges were filed, Purinton appeared before a judge in Henry County and waived his right to fight extradition.

It was not known how soon he would be returned to Johnson County.

Purinton allegedly told a bartender in Clinton that he had killed two Middle Eastern men, The Star has learned.

He reportedly told the bartender that he needed a place to hide out.

Assistant Clinton Police Chief Sonny Lynch said that a bartender called police after the man talked about being involved in a shooting.

Clinton officers responded and took him into custody without incident. Lynch said the man was not armed when he was arrested.

At least one witness reportedly heard the suspect yell “get out of my country” shortly before shooting men he thought were Middle Eastern. Both men, engineers at Garmin, appear to be originally from India.

The Star’s account of the 7:15 p.m. shooting Wednesday at Austins Bar and Grill in south Olathe near 151st Street and Mur-Len Road comes from law enforcement officials and witnesses at the scene.

The shooting left one man dead and two others injured.

Police investigate shooting at Austins Bar and Grill in Olathe

A shooting was reported about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at Austins Bar and Grill, 2103 E. 151st St. There were multiple victims in the shooting. The extent of their injuries was not known Wednesday night.

Two of the shooting victims were employees of the Aviation Systems Engineering team at Garmin, headquartered in Olathe.

In an email to employees, Garmin officials identified the fatal victim as employee Srinivas Kuchibhotla. Alok Madasani was injured, the email said.

“Unfortunately, two associates on our Aviation Systems Engineering team, Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, were shot. We are devastated to inform you that Srinivas passed away and Alok is currently recovering in the hospital,” Garmin said in the email.

In a public statement, Garmin said, “We’re saddened that two Garmin associates were involved in last night’s incident, and we express our condolences to the family and friends of our co-workers involved. Garmin will have grievance counselors on-site and available for its associates today and tomorrow.”

Kuchibhotla posted on LinkedIn in 2014 that he managed helicopter programs. He had a master’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso. He earned his bachelor’s degree at the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in India.

A 2014 post on LinkedIn said Madasani was an aviation program coordinator manager at Garmin. He studied at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and at Vasavi College of Engineering in India.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for Kuchibhotla and Madasani by a stranger who was sickened by the crime. Kuchibhotla’s loved ones also set up a GoFundMe site for him.

A third victim, Ian Grillot, was shot in the hand and shoulder. Witnesses said he stood up to the shooter and tried to stop him. A GoFundMe site had been set up for him.

Public records show Adam Wade Purinton, 51, owns a house in the 17600 block of West 155th Terrace in Olathe and previously lived in Wichita.

There are no federal or Missouri criminal records on Purinton.

Records indicate Purinton has an inactive pilot’s license and air traffic controller certificate.

A U.S. Navy spokeswoman confirmed that Purinton served in the Navy but said no further details were readily available because the records were being retrieved from the archives.

An online site that helps Navy veterans connect with former crew members showed an Adam Purinton had registered as being on the USS Long Beach CGN-9 — the Navy’s first nuclear-powered surface warship — from April 1988 to October 1990. The ship was decommissioned in 1995 after operating more than 33 years.

Purinton’s rank was listed as OS2, or Operations Specialist 2nd Class. An operations specialist operates radar, navigation and communications equipment in combat information centers on the ship’s bridge and can detect and track ships, aircraft and missiles.

In a 2008 court document, Purinton listed his employment as the federal government on Rogers Road in Olathe, which is the site of the Kansas City Air Route Traffic Control Center, one of 20 Federal Aviation Administration Area Control Centers in the country.

FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory told The Star that Purinton had worked for the FAA but left in 2000. She said she could not confirm or deny the location where he worked.

FAA records show that Purinton had a private pilot certificate that was issued in 1991 and a control tower operator certificate issued in 1994. The control tower certificate was limited to Wichita Mid-Continent Airport in Wichita. (That airport is now called the Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport.) Cory said both certificates had long expired.

“You have to have a valid medical in order for those certificates to be enforced,” she said.

Purinton’s last medical was in 1994, she said.

After the shooting, a heavy police presence descended upon neighborhoods close to Austins, which is near Olathe South High School and the headquarters of Garmin Ltd.

At one point, authorities blocked off several intersections near 155th and Lindenwood, just south of where police had set up a command post at Scarborough Elementary School. Police in military-style vehicles and officers in camouflage gear were seen in the vicinity of a house there.

Clinton police took the suspect into custody at 12:40 a.m. Thursday, according to a statement from Olathe police. Clinton is about 80 miles from Olathe and generally takes about 90 minutes to travel there by vehicle.

The suspect was being interviewed by detectives from Olathe and was transferred to the Henry County Jail later Thursday.

Witnesses said the suspect was in Austins drinking and making racial slurs. At one point, they said, one of the regulars stood up to the man.

Neighbors in the Scarborough neighborhood said the suspect may have suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. He also may have recently been diagnosed with a serious illness.

Four hours after the shooting, investigators were inside the bar combing for evidence.

Tyler Lape, 23, of Olathe, was at the bar and left about five minutes before the shooting.

He said he thought a friend of his was among the injured, possibly shot in the shoulder and the hand.

And this is really only the beginning.  I notice no one has called him a terrorist, but isn't that what he is?  He is terrorizing those who do not look like him.  I suppose it will all be OK if he says, "Sorry, my bad, thought you were a Muslim.  No hard feelings, right?"  Disgusting.

If no one else will call him a terrorist than I sure as fuck will.

And I know I've said this before, but not all Muslims are brown skinned.  Take Turkey, for example.  There are many practicing Muslims there who if you beamed them to some town out in the middle of nowhere Iowa, Nebraska, etc you would not be able to tell them apart from anyone else in town.  Hell, they'd probably speak better English than anyone else in town.

I'll call him a terrorist.  And point out that this is the same county in suburban Kansas City where the guy opened fire at a Synagog and a couple of years ago (that was Overland Park but really not all that far away)

I live about 45 minutes away, so it's time to chime in. Overland Park and Olathe are basically the same. Overland Park is a bit wealthier, but that's not to say that Olathe doesn't have money. I have a hard time telling where one ends and the other begins, to the point that I'll say "It's in one of the Os." Lots of nice shopping and restaurants, new housing developments, good schools, etc. Everything looks perfect from far away, but there's a problem, and it isn't just within this county. Kansas has a lot of problems, but this isn't one of them. This is an American problem, and none of us are safe from it.

One of my husband's favorite fraternity brothers actually lives a block away from Austin's. His wife was posting about it the night it happened, horrified, while the manhunt was going on. She knows the owners, and knew that it was a hate crime almost immediately. I didn't doubt her, but I was really sad when her story lined up with everything I read in the news.

As for Ian, I want everything and the world for that young man. What a great human being. All of his interviews about not being a hero overwhelm me. Just because you say something, doesn't make it so, and that young man is a hero in every sense of the word. The local alternative radio station had someone text into the text line last week that he apparently loves the Buzz, and they tweeted wanting someone to confirm this. They organize a lot of concerts, take pride in breaking bands, and organize community events in the name of Buzz family. I'm hoping he'll get the "not a hero" ticket package, complete with "totally not a VIP" access.

As for nobody's favorite moldy Cheeto, the lack of comment (beyond "it's too early to tell what his motivation was," which is just a lie) is telling.

The majority of Muslims I've known in my life looked very white: Persians, Bosnians, Turks, and converts.

It's taken me a while to realize that there is this general connection of Muslim = brown, and that there is a bunch of racism tied up in Islamophobia.

Hours after the FBI announced it is investigating a triple shooting at an Olathe bar as a hate crime, President Donald Trump condemned the attack.

The attack left Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, dead.

Kuchibhotla’s Garmin co-worker Alok Madasani, of Overland Park, and bystander Ian Grillot were wounded in the shooting around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at Austins Bar & Grill near 151st Street and Mur-Len Road. Kuchibhotla and Madasani are from India.

The FBI confirmed earlier Tuesday that it is investigating the shooting as a hate crime.

According to The Hill, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Tuesday that Trump condemned the shooting as an “act of racially motivated hatred.”

“The president condemns these and any racially and religiously motivated attacks,” Huckabee Sanders said.

The condemnation comes six days after the crime, a delay many had criticized.

In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder, a Kansas Republican, said he contacted the White House earlier in the day to urge Trump to condemn the shooting during his Tuesday night address to Congress.

“I’ve been clear that the President must use this amazing platform to condemn this hateful act in no uncertain terms and send a powerful message that no American should be fearful in their own community,” Yoder said. “Diverse political and religious views are what make our country great, and I look forward to him utilizing this opportunity tonight.”

In an editorial on Monday, The Star also called on Trump to denounce the violent act during his address to Congress.

A day later, Grillot said he, too, would like Trump to mention the shooting in his address.

“It would be nice for some kind of closure,” Grillot said.
