I love shoes, really love them! However, drunk me has been known to take them off wherever I am and lose them. :( We have to have a chat. Not in the winter mind you but I have many missing flats.

Not having shoes on while seated in a shopping cart is the least of this kid's worries.

No kidding. I saw the pics and my 1st thought was damn he's cute, 2nd did he take his shoes off or did Jessa just say screw it. Kids this age take them off, lose them, hate them, or just don't have them.  Odds are he wasn't walking anywhere, he's too small and she is to pregnant to chase him, Its NW AR it isn't that cold he's fine.  There are lots of things to snark on them about, him not wearing shoes isn't not one of them.

no need to what me.... apparently Jill liked the country because they went there - correct me if i am wrong

These people have a weird connection with Judaism. I know some of the girls wear Star of David necklaces and Josh had a menorah apparently... I guess it ties in with their beliefs about the end times.

I think Jill named Israel that as a political statement, was pretty obvious with the shirt Derrick wore to the hospital...something about defending Israel from the Palestinians.

Re: shoes: One was a shoe hater, and he LOVED to suck on socks. In the car, he'd get his shoes off, which were double knotted, and even had those shoestring holders over them, and he would fling them at the driver's (me) head. Those hard leather baby shoes that they all learn to walk in? I swear you could get a concussion. Then his sock would be all soggy from his mouth.

Later in life, we got a dog.. and damned if the dog didn't wrest the shoes from One's feet when they were playing in the yard and chew them.

Two just removed one shoe at a time, and hid it. Somewhere in my house, there is a pile of left shoes in toddler sizes that I have never found. Two is now 22. :my_rolleyes:

They wear Stars of David and appropriate bits of Judaism and talk about how much they love Jews, and then they vote for a man who happily gets into bed with anti-Semites and white supremacists, and support policies and Israeli politicians that are making left-wing types with no sense of nuance hate Jews (I've met people who seriously told me that I must hate Palestinians and Arabs because I'm Jewish and I had blood on my hands because I'm Jewish...which is like accusing Connie Chung of oppressing Tibetans), not to mention Arabs.

Spurge wearing or not wearing shoes is the least of his problems. If he's still stomping around barefoot at 18 while standing on a street corner preaching with his Daddy and 17 other brothers, then it will be a problem.

Please don't give them any ideas! I can picture Ben, Derrick, Spurgie, and his 17 other brothers, with Uncle Derrick carrying a "The End is Near" sign, and the others dressed in sackcloth, walking barefoot and eating locusts and wild honey. Only Ben will look normal.

I must add, in my scenario, Derrick has the really long hair and really long beard that the old time pictures of the prophets featured.

I was just looking back at a few Duggar clips on YouTube and it's crazy to see how Jessa went from being a somewhat likeable girl I sympathized with, to a smug in-your-face Instagram-preaching know-it-all. The shift seems to have happened around the time of the wedding, or a little before. Her attitude now is unbearable. She seems to have this air of "I'm hot and I know it." Jana is the opposite. She doesn't preach (that I know of) and doesn't try to hog the spotlight.

I worry a little about people who obsess over kids wearing shoes all the time, and who often overdress them before they're able to express well if they're hot or itchy or unable to move easily. That is, I worry a little for their kids, but at the least, I'd like them to tend to their own concerns. But I think it isn't terribly usual, at least not anymore. Maybe most people are now better informed about how babies need to be treated like babies, rather than Fabergé eggs or miniature Victorian adults.

As to attitude, well, these girls were prepared to be married, but seemingly not really prepared for marriage. Of course not many of us are, but at least most of us are more accustomed to living away from home and/or the intimacy of a love relationship beforehand. They're still waking up to it all.

I can see Derrick doing something like that as soon as next week. I have to wonder if he was always this crazy or if he's slipped down some kind of Christian hippie fundie rabbit hole.

Oh I would not put that past Derick. I think he is on the verge of being that crazy man on the corner. I don't know if he truly believes the end is near or he just hopes it is because he's so miserable.

My kids didn't wear shoes until they started walking and even then, if I knew they'd be going from car seat to stroller or cart, I'd skip shoes. Shoes are for walking outside, you don't need them in your house and if you aren't walking in the store, you don't need them then.

I don't recall how often I had shoes on as a wee lass, but I don't think it was too often.

I can't stand wearing shoes now, but must keep them on in public places, when driving, at work etc. etc.

I'm not a fan of shoes/clothes either. Never have been - my mother still complains about the number of socks/shoes I managed to loose when I was a kid - she eventually gave up trying to keep them on my feet and just stowed a set in her purse for when she knew we were going to be walking somewhere.  Even now I only wear shoes when I have to and kick them off when I'm able to get away with it.

You do you. Unless someone's shoe situation is putting themselves or others at risk of realistic harm, or their feet are negatively impacting you, life's too short to worry about other people's feet.

most doctors and child growth and development specialist don't really recommend shoes unless of coarse it is for protection from rough terrain.  Even early walkers are better off barefoot as it helps with balance and develop the coordination and muscles of the foot.

When my kids were very young,  they wore socks on outings, but no need for shoes.  I live in an area known for cold winters, but even so,  with a child young enough to be carried or in a stroller,  shoes are not really needed.  I was lucky that my kids left their socks on, but many kids hate socks.  For supercold weather,  my kids would be in a snowsuit that covered their feet when they were little.

As to Jessa responding to someone asking about Spurgeon's name,  other than her obvious misuse of the 18th century,  she was fine and honestly wouldn't we all get a bit testy if someone commented on our kid's name like that?  Dumb of the poster to bring that up.

Jessa has diva like tendencies, yet in other ways seems content with a simpler life.  For example,  she didn't rally for a big house, she seems fine so far in the little ranch.  Her wardrobe is terrible and seems to consist of the same 3-4 pieces in rotation.  Other than her wedding dress, she seems pretty content to look schlumpy and frumpy most of the time.  On the other hand,  she definitely seems to enjoy being the boss.  I think she sees herself in charge in most situations except if she has to submit to JB.  I still remember her shrill voice yelling out at everyone during a family Dinner with Jeremy.  She was bossing everyone around, and pretty much just sitting there.  I think she gives off a very superior vibe.  The only thing I find likeable about her is that she seems genuinely happy with Spurgeon.

I agree with whoever said she was not intellectually curious.  I think she is not curious about much outside of her little world in general.  Ben seems to be more intellectually curious and seems interested in having his small view broadened ever so slightly.  It remains to be seen if he has the intellectual power to actually learn well, or think critically, but I do think he has interest.  He just isn't experienced enough or wise enough yet to really be able to deeply think about things and reject some of the hypocrisy and rigidity he is part of.  Jessa may indulge Ben's interests, but if he were to really move farther out of their sphere, I am not sure how she would respond to that.  I feel pretty certain that if Ben were to move her away from the compound with all the available babysitters,  I think Jessa would consider limiting family size pretty easily.  She simply does not seem to like to work.  I wouldn't be surprised to find out she brings her laundry over to the TTH for one of the j'slaves to do for her, while she reclines on the couch and lets the other j'slaves play with Spurgeon.

If, as she and Jinger claim, they were are super close,  perhaps seeing Jinger enjoy more freedoms and a more mainstream life will spark interest in Jessa.  Probably not, because she is not a follower and it would be hard for her to accept a changing dynamic in her relationship with Jinger from Leader to follower, but who knows.

I would love to see them all leave the cult.  Jessa might have made a decent office manager, or in some job where her love of organization and delegation could really work.

And, can I say,  I really hope Jinger waits to get pregnant.  I just never get the feeling from her that she loves the idea of having kids.  She never seemed all that into the babies compared to Jill and Jana (then again, neither did Jessa and she does well) but she just seemed so uncomfortable when it was brought up.  I hope Jeremy noticed that and gives her time.

I always wondered why such an obviously vain woman doesn't at least try to look a little stylish. Modesty doesn't have to mean frumpy and dated. She spends so long on her hair, but doesn't seem to try below the neck. What's up with that?

also the way she reacts or talks to Ben whenever he tries something new - aka with Flame (this season coming)  - she reacts like a mother would - don't trip over cables - opposed to acting like someone who is interested in the same thing.  She isn't and won't say she is.  He may try to broaden his horizons for tv - but overall he is into  preaching.

Her diva like attitude only is enhanced because she knows she has a platform.

It just occurred to me that Jessa might be holding Baby Seewald #2 by the end of this thread. o_O

At least it won't look as ridiculous as Josh preaching in his Crocs.

Spurgeon is just a gross name. It is gross. No one needs to explain why, this is obvious. It is also shocking really that anyone is "anti-Catholic". How very smug to be against a major world religion. I don't even know what to say about that.

Israel is not the greatest name either. Don't get me started on that.

On the topic of kids not wearing shoes, I have an old photo of my mother and her schoolmates.  My mom is not wearing shoes, but neither were some of the other kids.  it was during the Depression and country kids didn't wear shoes everyday.  Kids would maybe wear shoes to church and when it was cold, but if the weather was good enough to go barefooted, you did.  My mom's feet were pretty dirty, btw.  I love that my mom went to school with dirty bare feet.

There are lots of people who are "anti-Catholic" for numerous reasons. Just because they are one of the largest religions doesn't mean that they don't have people who disagree with them.

Disliking or fearing other religions has been going on forever. Doesn't matter if it's Catholic, Hindu, Muslim, or fundie. There will always be those who cannot tolerate others' beliefs.

I actually like Spurgeon way better than Israel. I'll see myself to the prayer closet.

Perhaps if Jessa is bothered enough by the comments about the name "Spurgeon", she'll give pause and insist on giving her future kids more traditional names.

I don't believe that's likely but it would be an interesting turn of events.
