An Illinois woman is jailed on a felony theft charge after she was caught stealing 31 boxes of Trojan condoms from a supermarket, according to cops who said that the combined price of the purloined prophylactics exceeded $300.

According to court records, Shaearion Davis, 25, was arrested Tuesday afternoon following the condom heist at a Schnucks market in Swansea, an Illinois community about 15 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri.

Supermarket employees dialed 911 after they saw Davis swiping the condoms (and they tailed her after she left Schnucks). When Davis spotted the arriving cops, she ditched the Trojans and sought to flee. But the East St. Louis resident was quickly apprehended outside the business

Court records do not indicate whether Davis intended the condoms for resale or personal use.

While stealing anything is most definitely wrong, at least they weren't used.

This is sad.

And she could have easily gotten free condoms with the tiniest bit of effort and stayed out of jail. Maybe she didn't know? Or maybe she was reselling to (other?) sex workers. East St. Louis is a deeply depressed city with precious few ways out.

Yeah, I have family - sister, brother in law, feline kiddos - in the St. Louis area (St. Charles) and we've noticed how bad off the East St. Louis area is.  We were just down to see them last month so we  went over to the Cahokia Mounds and a lot of between the river and the mounds looked like, as Joel Hodgson put on MST3K,  "someone's last known photograph."
