      Guest Speaker 1.26.17 @ 8pm eastern   01/22/2017

I am pleased to announce that we have are going to have a Q&A with an ex-evangelical on Thurs, January 26, 2017 @ 8pm.  The Q&A will last for approximately 1 hour.  I will be setting up a subforum for guest speakers as I hope to be able to get some other folks come talk to us. Our guest on Thurs will be Chris Stroop.  Here is his bio: Christopher Stroop grew up a rank-and-file member of the Christian Right in an Evangelical enclave community, Stroop's childhood social milieu consisting mostly of family and people associated with church and/or Christian school. From about the age of 16, Stroop found himself dealing with an increasingly acute crisis of faith that was not addressed properly by the people he talked to about it, and he was subjected to spiritual abuse. Stroop nevertheless went on to earn a BA in history and German from Ball State University (summa cum laude) in 2003, and then a Ph.D. in modern Russian History and Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities from Stanford in 2012. Subsequently, Stroop spent three academic years teaching in the School of Public Policy at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration in Moscow, where he kind of sort of almost got in trouble for "teaching Pussy Riot lyrics." Currently, Stroop teaches nineteenth-century European history and Russian Studies classes as a Provost's Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of South Florida and, as a freelance writer and public speaker, speaks out against the abuses of conservative Christianity in general and the the white Evangelical subculture he comes from in particular. You can find many of his writings in this vein on Religion Dispatches. If you would like to support this work financially, please click here (for monthly support) or here (to leave a one-time gift). Stroop's more academic writings can mostly be found here, and you can follow him on Twitter - @C_Stroop.   We are going to use the Q&A forum format.  I will be setting up a special forum just for Chris.  I will open the forum about 15 minutes before the Q&A starts so you can start asking your questions.   We have a few rules.  Failure to follow these rules will get you temporarily placed in the Prayer Closet so we can preview your posts.  If you get put in the PC during the Q&A you will be released once it's over, but lets just follow the few simple rules so none of that is necessary. Rules for Q&A: 1. Be polite.  This is not an event meant for snark.  Chris is taking time out of his busy schedule to talk to us.  He is an expert in the things we discuss here, so let's give him respect, please. 2. One question per post.   Please don't bog him down with a bunch of questions in one post.  We are using the Q&A format so he can easily answer questions.  Putting a ton of questions in one post defeats the purpose.   You can continue discussion on the thread as he answers and ask another question in the same thread if you have one after he answers. 3. Please try to keep thread drift to a minimum during the Q&A.  After it's over, if you want to continue discussion on the topics  and they drift, that's fine. 4.  Be polite! These rules are subject to change as I and the helpmeets think over possible loopholes (cause there is always one person that has to push boundaries)

Lori Alexander 13: Transformed and Still Judgey

503 posts in this topic

Just coming out of lurking to say:

Just read the FB post on working mothers and mental illness - Lori really has no reading comprehension when she responds to others, does she (assuming that she actually reads the posts)? Jilly has some great arguments there, things that I myself experience firsthand so I know she's definitely got it right, but I suppose if she's not in total agreement with Lori then Lori won't hear it!

I know she is narcissistic, but seriously?

Oh man, came back from Christmas to a good old fashioned smackdown on the mental illness doodle from none other than Lori's lapdog Jilly. She's spot on, but of course Lori fights it.

Jilly's husband is mentally ill, iirc. And she adores him and will fiercely defend him against even Lori. I hope she gives Lori what-for.

eta: I just read the comment thread and I'm struggling to follow Lori's brainless blatherings. She responds to a comment about autism with "I am sure divorce has a lot to do with it too ... " Is she just continuing her own train of thought on depression, or is she seriously saying that divorce causes autism? And any doctor who said that "100 percent of teens" are going to be on anti-depressants is an idiot.

Arguments are starting on FB now. Lori posted a blog entry written by a woman who left her lesbian lifestyle and is now married to man. One person(a lesbian) posted a comment that the woman was pressured into turning straight and of course, a couple of arguments started over religion and the Bible.

As for the mental illness topics and topics about autism, Lori needs to shut the fuck up. She posted plenty of crap on her first blog on those subjects. Now I'm not expert on any of those subjects, but I know someone who is bipolar was raised by a devout Catholic SAHM. Lori's whole "And we wonder why so many children and adults are on drugs and suffering from depression and mental illnesses" argument is total crap".  Lori will never understand that some mental illness are due to chemical imbalances, genetics, and other biological factors. Depression can be caused by various things which can include the trauma of emotional or physical abuse. I hope all of Lori's kids stay mentally healthy. Fuck Lori for shaming her daughter who is dealing with infertility.

Discussion of Emily here:

I check in on her on Facebook now and then. I guess she's my pet Calvinist. She is still self-righteous, preachy and seemingly rather miserable. Fortunately for her, she has found a theology where misery is something of a virtue.

She also posted something about her husband turning 21 last week. They are mere babes and I wonder if things will change as they grow and mature and the zeal of conversion wears off.

Lori is such a condescending snobby bitch that reading what she writes makes me depressed that people like her exist.  She uses God to justify her judgement of people.

That nincompoop Lori seems to be trying to make another of her goofy posts go viral.

Emily Thomes makes me sad. Of course, Lori is going to exploit her misery as much as possible.

I noticed in the New Years 2013 photo Lori posted on FB that one daughter has quite the plunging neckline. How surprising. The one in the back doesn't look too modest either.

Yeah, I wonder why Lori doesn't use that photo when she blogs about modesty. Heh. The daughter-in-law in the back (Erin, I think) chose an unfortunate outfit that day. She looks like she's topless in that photo. Ken is quite fond of Erin. Lori has written in the past about how Ken loved to hear Ryan talk about how feminine and submissive Erin was. It gave me a creepy, stalker vibe.

I imagine there must be a lot of pressure never to change her mind about her "conversion" though, even if she starts to feel differently down the line. Who knows if there is much room to grow and mature for her, although hopefully there is because nobody's ever old enough to know everything about the world or themselves!

Ken has come riding in on his horse of truth on Lori's FB post to attack the ebil gays. He's not saying anything really out there in terms of gay people but he did say something interesting to one poster:

'I still battle my sexual desires and find that any battle against the flesh is within God's will: “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality…and a long list of sins” (Galatians 5:16-19).'

I guess Ken's been walking by one too many thongs lately, or is he alluding to something else?

Considered all we know (because they wrote it on the internet!) about  the Alexanders sex life (ten minutes, lube, vacation sex, needy man, porn watching, thongs ogling, kinky spanking, wife never enjoyed a thing) this

He may have taken a walk sightseeing on the beach, because had he watched porn it would be Lori's fault for not doing her job.

If he stopped writing bullshit and tried to pleasure his wife they would probably be much more satisfacted and less annoying.

I thought the same thing, she looks naked in the back there! Not very modest at all.

Include basketball in that list and Ken doesn't do much battling at all.

As for Lori, if she's going to be all super Christian and a teacher to women on her blog/FB, shouldn't she be participating in more discussion rather than letting her husband do her work? Seems to me like she just vomits outs a heap of hateful crap or a convenient web page, then gleefully waits for a VIRAL post ...

Small things I learned from Lori's 36 Years of Marriage post.  Ken hasn't changed his hairstyle or facial hair in 36 years. Totally stuck in the late 1970s - early 1980s. Still looks like a doof

Lori hasn't changed her hairstyle either, except now she dyes it very dark brown/black.

Two weeks ago, I asked the women in the chat room to post a picture of themselves kissing their husbands.

Well that's not strange at all :pb_confused:

Yeah, wow, no kidding. Talk about nosy. What was the point of that?

Just noticed the brag about how she had been practicing kissing months before! Some would say that is not biblical to even kiss before marriage. And no kissing pictures for 36 years, jeesh!

Ew, Lori!  That's sick.  Further confirmation for me that these two have a kink.  They should just go with it.  Join a swinger's club!  Get some toys!  Lighten the feck up!

That's just downright creepy. Is this for Ken's benefit?

She asked him to kiss her, so she could show the internet what they look like kissing?  Is that our lesson in modesty and discretion for the week?

Seriously??

Even fundie kids know what kissing looks like. They just aren't allowed to do it for themselves until marriage.

WTF is the point of getting couples to kiss and put photos on a chat room? I don't get it.

LOL at the 4th one. From the same woman who was appalled at her husband eating junk and who made him eat Big Salads.

Fundies... *shakes head*

"He's accountable to God, not me". LOL, yeah duh. Then why does it matter so much the yoga pants and what women wear! Who men look at and how they look at women is not something women can control.
