Coach Pat Summitt, the former head coach of the Lady Vols, the University of Tennessee's women's basketball team and the winningest basketball coach in NCAA history died this morning of Alzheimer's disease at the age of 64.  Coach Summitt retired as head coach in 2012 after she was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's.  She led to Lady Vols to eight NCAA titles, a feat only surpassed by John Wooden at UCLA and Geno Auriemma at UConn (U of Connecticut).  Coach Summit was one of only 4 NCAA  coaches to win 1000 games and the first to do so.  She won 1,098 games.

Pat's teams were a pleasure to watch.  She will be greatly missed.  Thank you for all you did for women's roundball, Coach Summitt!

Even though I'm not a Tennessee fan, I have always admired Coach Summit. She was one of a kind. Sally Jenkins at The Washington Post did a nice article today about how sharing her fight with early-onset Alzheimer's was her last great gift. She was so young to die of such a horrible disease.
