@lovemygsp: Allergy eyes can happen because of food allergies as well.

exactly. The kid's eyes look like allergy shiners to me. We have no idea if something Jill is eating / feeding him is giving him allergies. Wouldn't surprise me if he also has eczema. If you look at old pictures of Hannie and Jennifer even Jinger all have allergy shiners.

Children can definitely develop allergies before age two or three.  I had a daughter born with pollen allergies among many others and she has a child born the same.  Infants doing the "allergy salute" are both cute and sad.

It depends on the denomination and the people getting married.  Except for the liturgical churches (RC, Lutheran, Episcopal, etc.) there is usually a lot of freedom in what people say in their vows.  But "obey" is not, as far as I can tell, required by any denomination, including mainstream Baptists.

The next four samples from the Internet do not include "obey."

Sample Roman Catholic Wedding

Sample Methodist Wedding

Sample Traditional Wedding Vows (acceptable to Baptists)

Sample Traditional Ceremony from GodWeb (also Baptist-Friendly)

However, this site following includes several samples of wedding vows, at least one of which (the second set) includes the woman promising to obey, while a few talk about headships and female submission to husband.

Sample Wedding Vows at Bible.org

In short, most of the time when women in Tennessee or elsewhere say " to obey" it is because they chose to include it in their wedding vows.

Speaking as an Episcopalian, we have Rite I (older language) and Rite II (modern language, yet still beautiful) in the most current (1982) Book of Common Prayer. The option to include "obey" is in Rite I, but I can't say I've ever heard it used in the past 20+ years. And that includes both hetero and homosexual marriage service/ mass. It's in the older prayer book, which nobody uses except those few anglo-catholic piskies who broke off from ECUSA.

Derick was shopping for insect repellent in a "La Depensa de Don Juan" which is a store affiliated with Walmart; there are 20 of them in El Salvador according to this: http://corporate.walmart.com/our-story/locations/el-salvador#/el-salvador

PS Zika may not just be a problem for pregnant women; there is some concern that it may be linked to a paralysis disorder called Guilain-Barre syndrome: http://www.voanews.com/content/more-evidence-links-guillain-barre-syndrome-zika-virus/3209873.html.

I got married um... let's see.....7.5 years ago? i think that's right (don't tell my husband i forgot!)  We were married in california by a judge. His standard vow set included the word obey. But he gave us options: use his standard vows, edit his to our liking, or write our own from scratch. We chose to edit and changed just a few things. We took out obey for one.  For another we asked to equalize them further and not use "man and wife" and instead use "husband and wife".

Yeah, I got married in an Episcopalian service about three years ago (second marriage) and we definitely chose Rite II.   Even the Anglicans USA who broke away from the ECUSA over gay priests (among other things) have a choice about "obey."  The Church of England Book of Common Prayer revision of 1928(?) made the obey optional (I know this bit of trivia as a fan of Dorothy Sayer's Wimsey novels.  See Busman's Honeymoon. ;) ). I would think the Episcopal book did also, and this is the one the conservative Anglicans like.)

In short, if the bride says "obey" in most cases it is by choice.

This post looks like variation of damage control to me. It isn't sincere or explanatory. It just makes me feel like he's saying "we read your comments, and bought some OFF. Happy?"

Am I the only one thinking that the post is kind of mocking the whole situation and fears over the virus? I am sure most people are taking serious precautions. He is taking a pic with a bottle of bug spray with a weird smirk on his face.

I thought that too. "Combat that Zika virus" sounds pretty tongue-in-cheek to me, especially when paired with the smirking picture holding the bug spray.

I have a feeling that both of them have stop caring to a point what the general druggar snark crowd thinks and just trolling us lately. My bet as to when they stop trolling will be when they want more money to feed their grifter lifestyles.

Also I wonder if Dereck might have given up personal hygiene for Lent but I think he started this "grifter on the street cornor" look before lent.

Totally.  If I had a wife who was pregnant or looking to become pregnant, I wouldn't be taking Zika so lightly.  But of course, it is all in the Good Lord's hands, and if He wants us to have a baby born with microencephaly, so be it.  :my_rolleyes:

On a side note, am I the only one who when I see this thread title....think for a moment... .oh, are Jill and Derrick going to Israel to convert the Jews and Muslims?

Right.  So OFF! is all he needs.  Am I to take it that he will soak Izzy from head to toe, 24 hours a day?  Will Jill be sleeping in a face slathered in DEET?  Whoops!  You missed a spot.  He is kidding himself if he thinks this is the answer.  It is a start, sure, but I do hope he is taking the possibility of a mosquito bite more seriously than he lets on.

A few years ago it came out that the main ingredient in OFF is DEET & that shouldn't be used on babies b/c it is absorbed thru the skin & can damage their liver. haven't seen a can of OFF lately, but I'm assuming that knowledge is on the can, right??

Well we know they aren't going to read the can and they aren't going to do any research. Stupidity is a virtue in that family.

Exactly. The Dillards read the can? I get the impression he is buying just because people have mentioned it so many times. They don't really need it. He is doing it just to shut some of us up. I really hope I am wrong and they are being told to take precautions. I have a feeling her parents were very cavalier about it and led her to believe it was all a rumor amongst the heathens and would not affect them. I really hope she is not pregnant and not trying. The pictures of the babies affected by Zika are heartbreaking. I do not know if Jill is emotionally equipped to handle a child that has difficulties.

I really have nothing of value to add, but whatever, I'm adding a comment. I haven't checked the Duggar threads lately. Every time I check up, Derick looks worse and worse. And I know we mock people when we internet diagnose stuff through Instagram pics. But damn, he just looks off lately. Can you get a weird vibe through a pic? Cause I sure am. I hope that I'm wrong and he's just self conscious about his jaw and the surgery and is covering it up with much facial hair, but he also just seems to have this crazed look in his eyes. While I don't trust that he and Jill will make the wisest choices, I hope that it all works out for them. No bad pregnancies, no crazy husband, no zika, no baby drowning in deet

http://www.cdc.gov/westnile/faq/repellent.html

-snipped-

Of the products registered with the EPA, those containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products provide longer-lasting protection.

Can insect repellents be used on children?

Yes. Most products can be used on children. Products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus should not to be used on children under the age of three years. EPA does not recommend any additional precautions for using registered repellents on children other than those listed above. (See article)

So it looks like DEET can be used in repellent according to the CDC

Actually my first thought was that he was mocking his former employer - Walmart. If Dereck can run down to the local version of Walmart the Dillards can't be too far from civilization.

Zika hasn't been studied enough to understand, but it seems to have a devastating impact on unborn babies. Until scientists figure out what's going on with Zika IMO the smart choice is to not get pregnant if you are living where the virus exists, heck, even the Pope has ok'd birth control because of the Zika crisis.

But the Dillards and their ilk aren't very smart, @ least using mosquito repellant is better than doing nothing. I do wonder why it took J&D so long, Zika news has been a big deal for a couple of weeks and the Dillards are just now deciding maybe they should go buy a can of OFF???

I'd be more impressed if they were spending some of the money they grifted for this 'mission' to buy cases of OFF to share with their potential convertees.

Does Derek buying OFF tell us that he and Jill are not taking steps to avoid pregnancy?

I see it as not exactly mocking, but responding to the general public's criticism of them with a defensive "Look! We're protected. Stop criticizing!"

And I'd be shocked if they were taking steps to avoid pregnancy.

Derick looks like crap warmed over.  He does in ever picture I've seen lately.  Not only the scraggly beard, but it looks like he hasn't been eating down there. Makes me think of Charley Manson frankly.

I love baseball but I'm dreading the new season because the White Sox ownership is THE FUCKING WORST. I watched Dominican League Baseball (Lidom!) over the winter and fell in love with their joy, spirit, and exuberance. The broadcasts were in Spanish and my Spanish is pretty weak but I loved catching phrases and repeating them. Bombe! I'm sad about MLB and Commissioner Idiota's busywork rules. But I love baseball, always and forever.
I guess I don't have a point. Just bitching. Te amo mucho, Lidom!

      Happy International Women's Day!

Humanity may have some work to do, to improve gender equality, but I was glad to hear that France has taken an important step to protect healthcare for women (and people of other genders who can get pregnant).

Feeling ragey this morning. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon in the hope of getting help for an ongoing injury. I went to a (different!!) doctor late last year who completely blew me off. He wouldn't do diagnostic testin, he refused to send me to a specialist, and he just told me to "take it easy" and "take ibuprofen." I'm hopeful for today's appointment but I'm also feeling a SEVERE amount of rage at that doctor from last year!

Well, the rash is back with a vengeance. It never completely cleared up. I saw the derm yesterday and they did another swab and yup, raging infection again, still? It is definitely strep skin infection. I am getting so damn tired and run down from this. Who the f would immagine being hospitalized freaking TWICE for a rash?

My niece is going to be a seat filler at this year's Academy Awards.  Seat fillers are asked to wear tuxedos regardless of sex/gender.  If you see a pretty young woman with very curly hair, it could be my niece.
