What is cuddly, fluffy and starts with an E? Sarah Maxwell Gets a Dog

Please don't feed your dogs a raw diet unless it's being over seen by a professional vet. The women who sold it to you at the fancy pet emporium does not count.  It's is incredibly rare that a raw diet will be a healthier choice for your pet than a high quality dog kibble.

Pro tip, if you're dog gets sick because you feed them trendy food, pet insurance will not cover it.

Double protip: healthiest diet for your cat is a good quality cat food.

Healthiest diet for your hamster is a good quality hamster pellets

Healthiest diet for your fish, fish food

Healthiest diet for your bird, pellets.

Raw food diets are great...if you know what you are doing, have access to good quality meat, and feed them in the right proportions.  Yes, many kibble brands are crap *cough purina cough* and many have been tested and found to contain molds which can cause allergies.  However one of the five star brands such as Orijens coupled with high quality canned food with limited ingredients is the way I feed my dog.  First because the top brands of grain-free canned foods come in a wide variety of protein  sources such as lamb, salmon, bison, venison, duck, rabbit, and wild boar.  Second, I know that she is covered nutritionally.  Third, I found raw feeding too messy and my dog refused a number of raw foods such as fish and eggs.  I was always a little too worried about salmonella and cross contamination and I found it difficult and expensive to find different protein sources.  By the way, I still feed her her raw meat bones three times a week and tripe (which is preferable to vegetables) as a once in awhile treat because she loves it so much.

However my original comment referred to the fact that too many people feed their dogs table scraps.  The Standard American Diet (SAD) is not great for humans and it is terrible for dogs: way too much salt, sugar, processed carbohydrates, and preservatives.  Ham, for example is toxic and can kill a dog. In addition many people who feed their dogs scraps end up with overweight dogs because it is given in addition to their regular diet.  A large dog especially needs to be kept at weight or better yet slightly under so that there is less strain on the joints. Also large dogs need to eat food formulated for large breeds so that they don't grow too fast. Hopefully the breeder will have given all of this information to Sarah because I doubt she will be doing any on-line research or reading any books about dogs.

Second all of this and feed Orijen kibble, EVO canned topper and some veggie toppers myself. I would do raw if my DH wasn't vegetarian and squeamish.

Dog-food wars on websites can get just as nasty as peanut wars on mommy sites, I am guessing (but, lo, I am just a doggy-mama).

I do hope that Sarah does due diligence in learning about training and appropriate ownership but I sort of doubt she will.  It appears Ellie has received her first homeschool lesson with her schoolmates/cousins.  I wonder if fundies have a Scamaritan for pets -- our health insurance for our dogs has paid for itself many times over.

ETA: Ok.... paid for itself in that I WANTED to save my pet through several different health crises.  I suppose, upon reflection, my goals may differ from Stevehovah's.

Not sure if anyone else clocked this yet but there has been a significant amount of comment culling over at the Maxhell blog, mainly to the Ellie post.

Could it be that Sarah posted most everything that was submitted and then Steve came along behind her and 'took out the trash'? There were a few subtleties that might have gone over her head amoug initial replies.

Either that or the sheer volume of interest in the dog grated on Steve.

Do you recall what some of the comments were that were deleted?

Also guys, you do realize he has heavy censor software on his devices, right? This site would be blocked because of content and language. I agree again with Sparkles an occasional fan might keep him up to date on what the evil interwebz is doing to persecute him and steal his children's hearts.

Didn't he write once that Teri has complete control over what everyone in the family, including he, can access on the internet. I don't remember if he came right out and said it but I think he alluded to how he would look at porn if he had unfettered access.

OMG :pb_eek: I have a German Shepherd, and I am in contact with the "parents" of a lot of his cousins.  Yes, I know it's weird.

Anyway, I refuse to tell them what I feed him.  Not interested in starting a war over doggy food.  He came with tummy issues, and it took me forever and a day (and a million trips to the vet) to find the right food for him.  I spoon feed him because otherwise he doesn't eat as much as I'd like for him to.  I know it's nuts, but it works for us.

Before I had kids, I made my dogs' food- raw meat, carrots, broccoli and brown rice.  After I had kids, I bought limited ingredient food for them. Nelliebelle lived to be 17, Max to 15. Finnegan, who ate nothing but my food until he was 8, is now 15 and back on raw. I can buy it now via mail order. He was on 2 prescriptions and was nearly incontinent until I switched back to raw. Now he has lost 10 sorely needed pounds and is more active than he has been in years.

Sorry- that is the real Nelliebelle, shortly before she died. I miss her desperately!

@nelliebelle1197,  I apologize for my mistake.  Nelliebelle looks like a real sweetheart.  I can totally see why why you'd miss her so terribly.  I feel the same about my Lucy.  She lived to be 15.

A raw feeder here. Ok, at the moment my dog is on 50/50 raw and fish-based kibble, because I can't provide her with fresh meat that regularly, but as soon as I sort out these issues, she'll be back on 100% raw.
No, not because it's "trendy". Because allergies are motherfuckers.

My completely unscientific observation of nephews (no kids of my own) is that often the same baby may look like some tiny, skinny, wizened old man then in a few weeks look like a chubby little ball (or the reverse)

I believe the only actions Steve takes when he sees/hears criticism of himself is to stop being around the people critcizing him... hence leaving the church he was in and narrowing his family down to just those he is married to or fathered.

...And, of course, they're not allowed to criticize him...

We used to call my oldest daughter "spider monkey" because she was so skinny even at 5-6 months when most babies are roly-poly chunks.   She was perfectly healthy and ate like a longshoreman (seriously - the amount of food and breastmilk this kid could put away would have astounded most people :pb_surprised:) but that was just her body type.  She barely weighed 17 lbs. at a year old and had been walking since before she was 9 months old.

Sarah has posted some more cute photos of Ellie and the nieces & nephews. That is a seriously adorable puppy. Sarah seems quite enamored - she's been posting about her a lot!

Sometime back Sarah posted a few pics of the non-reversals as kids.  The pic of her was one whenshe was about 5-6ish holding a cocker spaniel puppy. She had a look of pure joy, much like the pic of her holding Ellie.

So her smile reached her eyes back then?

Puppys are cute but a whole shitload of work. my mil got my husband a puppy when he was little but they got rid of in within a week because it made messes and chewed things. I hope the Maxwells can handle puppyhood.

Jack Russells are brilliant little people! So cute, so, SO clever, and just damn sweet.

My first dog was a JR called Muffy (I let my little step daughters name her) and I still miss her, too. She was just beautiful, and always seemed to know what to do no matter what mood I was in. That little dog could read me like a book.

I must look out a photo, I don't have any of her scanned.

You'll never believe the impact of this thread.  We'd been toying with the idea of a dog for months and Ellie tipped me over the edge.  She is so cute.

However, being sensible people, we picked up our gorgeous rescue girl today who is lying next to me snoring.

So, thank you Sarah Maxwell (never thought I'd say those words).

The Maxwells would probably not get a rescue dog.  Generational sin and all that. ;)

Alas that is very true :)
