They aren't allowed unlimited internet not only because of seeing sinful things, but also because they could learn more than JimBob knows. He is the all-knowing headship. The internet is powerful because it contains actual knowledge that has not been filtered through Gothard. If people are allowed to learn anything outside what he wants them to know, there is the possibility that they could see what a crock of shit he is espousing. The best way to keep people under your control is to limit knowledge.

Didn't they say Jana was the only with the internet password? I don't understand how a 26 year old is ok with having unlimited access to anything and everything but doesn't use it. I have a feeling she drank just as much kool aid as Jill.

In Growing Up Duggar, the girls say that the internet on their phones and computers are controlled by passwords that Michelle and the older girls (but it may be just Jana) know, and they can only access the internet with a buddy.

I don't think they'd know what sneaky is if it smacked them in the face haha.

I bet JB keeps an eye on the monthly usage. If it changes too much there are probably investigations

They could use public wifi (I think Chickfila offers it) but I'm not sure they know what it is.

They're not allowed to go anywhere alone, so their buddy would also have to be sneaky. Libraries have internet access. Are they allowed to go to the library? I know it's a dangerous place, and they might find out the earth is older than 6,000 years.Obviouslyi, SOTDRT doesn't place much importance on research papers.

I would say probably not. Too many heathens and their toxic literature you see. :kitty-wink:

Since they are not allowed to read books beyond the Bible and Waiting for Prince Charming, why would they go the library?

I'm pretty positive the middles can't read anyway. So the library is moot point lol

I believe all the girls have the passwords to the internet/computer to keep boys from finding porn, but as someone else said their usage is monitored. All the computers are in public spaces where anyone can see what you're doing. And, I'm sure that there are all kinds of web nanny programs running. And, frankly, none of the kids knows enough about anything to figure out how to get around that.

I doubt they are. The show had an episode where Anna took Kynzie and maybe Michael (not sure how old the episode was) to the library and she was completely lost. I guarantee it was only done for the cameras and she never did it again.

The lost in the library just makes me so very sad. I love the library. I love books. I just can not imagine life without that outlet. I am so tickled that my granddaughter has picked up the joy of reading. She carries a book every where she goes. That says so much about their ignorant lifestyle. The things those children and adults could have learned and experienced just going to the library. Maybe even used a cookbook!

They have a sad and dreary life. I can't imagine what they have to get up for in the morning. It is just the same ole crap every single day.

Reading is so important in my family. Until I was seven and my parents graduated Uni, our family of 6 didn't have much money but you could always go to the library and grab books for free entertainment. While these days cheap reading entertainment mostly comes for me in the form of fan fiction I am still an avid reader.

When I was a kid up until the beginning of 5th grade I HATED reading. I could do it and always tested well for my grade but, I thought it was boring and stupid. Then along came Mrs. Boardman, my grade school librarian. She turned me onto spooky books. I was off and running after that. I would go to the school library Friday after school and pick three books. I would read one Friday night, one Saturday  and the last one on Sunday.  I owe her a huge debt. I eventually branched out from the spooky stories but that was my favorite genre for many years.

I doubt the Duggar kids were ever fortunate enough to have a Mrs. Boardman or the freedom to find the kinds of books they like.

The people I know (myself included) who love reading the most as adults are often those who struggled with it in the beginning, probably because we had bad teachers who didn't know how to teach us in a way we understood then when we finally got one who either knew how to teach us in a way we understood we excelled quickly.

I had quite bad school experiences. I was bullied the whole way through not just by students but also by some teachers, my 2nd and 3rd grade teacher regularly made me cry and my fourth grade teacher spent a year calling me an idiot in front of the whole class, by my last year I wagged more than I attended school. The whole experience left me anxiety ridden and with a massive inferiority complex. My parents never believed how bad it was. I escaped through books but I always felt stupid but then at 21 I decided to go to Uni for better job options. It was then that I finally excelled and I realised that I am actually quite intelligent but bad school experiences made my education shaky and I had to teach myself all these skills I never learnt. The anxiety and inferiority complex are still there though.

I have loved reading all my life. Mama didn't drive but she worked full time as a Registered Nurse and Daddy took her to and from work. She always had a book in her purse in case she had to wait. We went to the library every weekend and I begged for a library card. The  Librarian said I had to be able to write my name. I had not started school yet so Daddy sat down with me and taught me to write my name and then took me back to the library to get a card. Now I won 't go anywhere without a bag with books, magazines or my tablet. My ten year old niece always takes a book with her. In fact, we spend so much time together that she leaves books in my car to be read. The fact that the Duggar children don't have this kind of memory or memories of favorite books that meant a lot to them makes me sad. There are so many great books out there that can really inspire and uplift you, make you think in a different way, answer  questions you don't even know you have. There is also the fact that people who read a lot tend to have larger vocabularies and are better at spelling. I know why the Duggar parents don't encourage reading, I just cannot imagine deliberately  limiting your children so relentlessly

My first memory is my Dad reading 'Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There' to me as a bed-time story, I must have been 2 or 3 at the time. I can still quote 'Jabberwocky'.

I was a little delayed when it came to reading. It took me a little bit to get what was going on through each sentence and I finally improved by 3rd-4th grade.  Now I read everyday before I go to sleep. It's such an awesome way to unwind from the day and it honestly makes me so happy. Also I was one of those kids with my brother would go every Tuesday till 7th-8th grade at our library with our mom and she always had to limit me to 5 books cause sometimes I got a little too excited. I also agree how it would make me so sad to not be able to go to the library to you know learn something new and exciting.

I always wanted to read beyond my grade level and got to the point I couldn't get the ones I wanted on my child's card so Mama or Daddy would have to check them out for me. It was a happy day when I got my teen card. Even now I max out my card because I see so many things I want to read. My library system has a lot of magazines too so I check them out. There's no way I could afford to buy all the things I read.

This was my kids incentive for learning to write their name too!!

Apparently I taught myself to read before starting school, I don't remember ever not reading, and I loved the library in elementary school.

I have so many warm memories of my family that revolve around reading - my precious hard copies of Lord of the Rings that my husband bought me when we were newly married and broke college students, because I was laid up with a skiing injury.

The summer evenings that he read all of The Chronicles of Narnia to our kids (he read them all through twice, once to the older group of kids and then again a few years later to the younger kids).

And my favorite thing about Christmas - picking out a book for everyone in my family!!

This is one (and there are many) way in which the Duggar parents have totally committed malpractice as parents. Admittedly, it makes me the most sad.

I can't imagine growing up without libraries and reading (on purpose).  Since I have a hard time recalling details from my childhood, a few years before my mom died, I asked her if I liked being read to.  She said "I never read to you, you read to me, you insisted!".

I mentioned that I spend a lot of time with my niece, who just turned eleven two days ago. When she spends the night, even now, we have to read to each other before she goes to bed. I know she continues to read even after I leave the room, but she thinks I don't know. Anyway, it's a nice way to end the day for both of us. She lives twenty minutes away and we have to build in time for reading before I leave if I'm at her house. It is a nice tradition to have and kids remember that adults took time to do something like this. I can't say I enjoy all the things we read, she's into zombies right now and they are so not my thing, but I enjoy the time with her.

People have different learning modes through which they best absorb knowledge. There are visual leathers who pick stuff up through pictures and watching demonstrations, auditory learners who learn best through words and lecture, and kinesthetic learners who are hands-on through tactile activities. It is highly unlikely that all the Duggars have the same dominant learning mode. It is also highly unlikely that using the wisdom booklets accesses all three learning modes. SOTDRT may work for some of them, but certainly not all.  I remember an episode where they razzed James for not being very studious and all I could think is that he probably wasn't being taught in a way that engaged him properly.

Several Duggar kids have probably gotten along by exercising sheer self-discipline to sit quietly and pretend to pay attention, but I'll wager when it comes to acquiring useful knowledge many have slipped through the cracks.

I'm sure the Duggars would say one of the reasons they homeschool is so that they can tailor the education to each child. We all know it is to keep them out of the evil public schools, plus to keep the parents from answering to anyone else. For some kids homeschooling is great, but they have engaged parents who actually know their children and do know how they learn. A lot of homeschooling children belong to cooperative groups where different parents teach other people's kids according to their skills. The Duggars are using a one size fits all approach and limiting materials to those that adhere  to their belief system. A self-directed kid might have a chance but someone who needs a lot of direction and encouragement would be lost. In my opinion the only reason they even pretend to homeschool is to keep outsiders from criticizing them, they don't take any pride in the  accomplishments of their children,  just in the fact that there are so many of them. Anyway, they can always make up jobs and certifications for them. Last time I looked, Jana wasn't coming to my town to play with the symphony and Jinger didn't have any photography exhibits scheduled. I'm not criticizing Jana or Jinger, just using them as  an example of the way the parents inflate everything.
