It just seems so damn cocky to me, to portray yourself as being so amazing close to god that you can speak for him.

They are bonkers. Certified.

And hey, if grandpa says its ok, then its ok!

It kind of pissed me off so that's why I fired off tonight's missive. He's so damn self absorbed that he is a pharisee IMHO.

If I ever made a Maxwell drinking game I would die of liver failure before I'd find a single thing Steve's ever written that didn't mention death. He's obsessed. It's really not healthy. Why would anyone choose to live that way?

treemom

I really am beginning to think that not only does Teri suffer from debilitating, untreated depression but that it has had an impact on steve and he has developed some sort of anxiety disorder or such.

It is a mouth piece for Jesus. So do not get upset when they refuse to post comments that are un-Christlike.

PS: Steve asked his Dad, who is a veteran, if asking people to pray for the souls of all the aborted fetuses on Memorial Day was A-ok. He said it was, so bless your hearts. They've got a touch of Catholicism going on there, huh?

I feel so blessed. That was my comment about the Memorial Day post.

As I am an evil liberal Lutheran I posted this to the dear guy:

I am certainly glad that the Lord I worship and praise does not tell us that this is a dying world. It is a world full of vibrant believers who praise his name, sing and dance and celebrate his goodness. Not a dreary self involved patriarch who imbues death and dying into every living moment of his day.

Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.

Martin Luther

God wants us to be happy and to look towards the future.

Evil* lineup Lutheran Sister anniebgood, I love you!! signed, evil* moderate Lutheran MJB

*but holy & rejoicing because of the Savior!!

Everything that is done in the world is done by hope.

Martin Luther

If you have no hope, then what good is living?

I more fear what is within me than what comes from without.

Martin Luther

Separation from the world is useless if your heart is heavy and sad all the time.

And finally:

Pray, and let God worry.

Martin Luther

You spend so much time trying to keep the world out and separate yourselves that you are becoming the pharisees who say to God, Look how special I am! Look at those poor people who don't believe what I believe! I'm so much better than they are.

Relax and let go and let God.

What a great comment. Thank you, annieb. I'm sure it won't get printed but I'm equally sure it will bug Steve for days.

Oh, and yes, I'm quite sure Steve reads here regularly although he probably doesn't allow his immediate family to see the board. The question would be whether the allegedly independent married sons also read here or does Daddy Steve forbid them to do so?

I had to chuckle at Gizmola's comment on their blog "Bless your hearts". I doubt she meant it in the typical southern "F-you" way but in my mind she did

ems

So "the Lord will hold them accountable" for things that are posted on their blog, even if they're not things they said? Ah, Maxwell logic, you are interesting indeed.

Another beef: how is abortion an American issue? Women in all nations (both those with legalized and illegal abortion) have abortions. Thus - not an American issue. I'm sure their issue is with Roe v. Wade and not abortion in any other place :/ but -- see, Maxwells? Memorial Day: an American holiday to commemorate American servicemen and women. Nothing to do with abortion. That is why it is inappropriate to talk about abortionin a Memorial Day post. Siiigh...I'm sure they still don't get it.

And some of the comments are truly eye-roll worthy. One person said Jesus himself said his followers would be persecuted. Persecuted? Really? A few negative comments?

C'mon.

Another quotes Ronald Reagan (the only president fundies ever seem to quote) who says something like only already born people are for abortion. Okaaaaaaaaaaay

I just posted this: "Bless your heart, indeed! I was happy to see that nobody has dared to post anything here opposing your true and Bible-based convictions!" Now let's see if it gets past moderation.

by Creaky Mom (3/19/11) describing Maxwell family dynamics. I think it deserves a repeat here. There just is no room for a dissenting opinion in Steve's world...much less anything resembling a breath of fresh air, or an independent thought.

(Hope this is OK with you, Creaky Mom!)

Maxwells - mind numbingly dull isolationists who somehow got and keep eight kids/adults to comply without apparently coming apart at the seams. Mama, struggles with depression - untreated.

They are a good example of what happens when one gets scared of the world and takes shelter. The shutting off from normal interaction on a day to day basis shows up in things like, Daddy Maxwell's surprise that someone buying greens at the grocery store was doing so for a pet gerbil despite the fact that Daddy Max was doing the same. Or the family appearing to pray for the salvation of someone because she was a single mom. Or the continuous prayer requests for the mundane and trivial.

There are no friends but family, no sports, music thus far I've determined must all be Godly music, no education except SOTDT, no jewelery, no make-up, no tweezing, Mother-Daughter baggy frumpers, no newspapers, tv, no interaction with community anything. Daddy makes and keeps all the decisions - even if he forgets them. Mama in fact won't remind him to pick up pizza since it would be a sin for her to usurp his authority in so doing. Children can't make decisions for themselves or have anyone ask them "What do you want or think?" ie. a dentist asking the child brace-wearer what she might want to do. For all the apparent serenity - the mind calisthenics must be amazing.

They built their house. The married "children" live next door or across the street. The "children" sleep in bunks. The main Maxwells ground floor is tiled even in the living room which would be nice if one lived in Costa Rica or Spain. They live somewhere in Missouri, which I understand, still gets snow and can be cold. The lighting in the living room is akin to a cozy garage light blazing overhead.

Cleaning is a favourite past-time. They write books about cleaning and organizing and have a thing they'll sell you, whichyou can attach to your own child so lucky her or him can indulge in Maxwellian regimentation with little more than that much input from yourself - lucky you.

Early to rise, 0530 or 0500 - can't remember - for Family Bible Time.

Early to bed, finishing the day with more Family Bible Time.

They are their own church. Papa Maxwell is the untrained family pastor, but no matter.

Just this week Christopher and Nathan, the only two married "children" as they still call themselves, "took" the funeral of someone who went to their "church". So it looks like they are now playing pastor too.

However, when Christopher married recently, it was in a "real" church - so I don't know what that was all about.

30 year old SAHD/child Sarah writes kid's books and for the family blog, both of which are exceedingly poorly done and is waiting for Daddy to find her a husband.

We see infinite photos of the family doing the same things with the same posed smile. There is never any variation in expression except at Bible Time when all appear solemn.

When on the road we see infinite photos of Uriah the bus from different angles. (Really, how many photos of a BUS do we need?)

Recently Daddy Maxwell perhaps realizing his sin of omission in neglecting bodily exercise added an old-school exercise regime - Family Fun with push-ups and lunges. We are now treated to photos of skinny Maxes lined up on the floor - together, because that's what families are supposed to do - flexing their skinny limbs like an Eric Carle caterpillar.

I recently read a review of Papa's writings stating Senior Max comes off condescending, believes their way is the only Biblical way and parents who don't agree with them are bad parents.

They are currently on tour wherein Daddy Max nixed an excursion to the Grand Canyon. Sarah followed a day or so later with a report of a neighbouring RV tire exploding. The day after that, they showed one of the male "children" apparently excusing or excited about the fact that he was, "yes, in his excercise clothes", talking to the owner of the exploding RV tire.

Really.

Sorry to have bored you with all this. But you asked.

meh, he's right. It isn't a public forum and he doesn't have to post or even acknowledge anyone's comments. I am surprised he even DOES to be honest. If you continually poke him he will make it private and then where will the fun be?

He never did post or even send me an email answer my question about whether or not it is true that he teaches at his conferences that adult children should live at home till marriage and if that is true how does it mesh with his statement that his kids aren't in the military because God hasn't called them. I might go repost it just to annoy him.

You should write back and pretend to be a man. A godly man asking for guidance from a fellow patriarch. What to do if an adult son says he thinks the Lord is calling him to join the army, but you've taken the Maxwells' parenting advice to heart and always raised your children to shun the world and live under your headship until marriage?

Woo I've just reregistered to this new ste just in time to snark on my "favourite" family

I must say, I love the line about how he would wish for everyone in the flesh to be exactly like him and his family. That to me, from a family who insists they are life long learners (Annas college post, it's a unique trate to fundies apparently, of course the rest of us coul never possibly learn), well first off clearly says the opposite and to me just cries CULT! Seriously, he actually thinsk he is the chosen one? his family are the ones who are right and they do not need any example of others? I kind of new this anyway, but that line has really taken them up a level in insanity and control freakism, YOU ARE NOT A TRAINED PASTOR STEVE AND YOU REALLY DON'T KNOW ANYTHING!!!!

Life-long learners of what? Different ways of cleaning? I don't want my family to be anything like them. They depress the hell out of me.

No kidding. While I don't have kids myself, I smile just a little bit more and feel just a bit stronger Aunt pride whenever I see my nieces & nephews living happy, fulfilling lives, because I know they have everything controlling families like the Maxwells don't. They have friends outside their family, they have sports and activities outside the home, they love music and dancing and playing and reading whatever they get their hands on. Their laughter and smiles are genuine and honest and they're seldom seen without a grin. Their parents love them and encourage their interests and partake with them - being coaches, etc.

They do all have household chores and obligations. They all have responsibilities and family obligations and commitments.

I am grateful every day that they were born into the families they have.

Ok, just got back from the Maxwell's blog comment section. You ladies are so naughty, 30 mins in the prayer closet for the lot of ya.

I'm guessing that saracasm is not taught at SOTDRT at la casa de Maxwell.

Can someone enlighten me? What qualifies Steve Maxwell to be a pastor, if that's what he considers himself?

As far as I can tell, he just decided to stay home & start being one some years ago. I looked at their website but couldn't find much info on his background before the dawn of frumpers, SOTDRT, and Uriah.

TIA.

Well, he has recently claimed he was in the army at some point, though it's the first any of us have ever heard of it. After college, he was an engineer. Then the Lord called him to work at home because:

(a) interacting with female coworkers could've tempted him to lust, and even if it didn't, going to work lunches and meetings and things with them gave the appearance of lust and temptation to adultery (I don't really understand how, since I'm sure nothing remotely like this ever entered his coworkers' heads, but Steve seemed pretty insistent on this point. Keep in mind that this is the man who doesn’t trust himself with his own internet passwords, lest he be exposed to something Of The World, which as far as I can surmise is code for going on a massive porn bender)

(b) it was against God's will for him to be away from his children 8 hours a day; he was called be around 24/7 to school them in the Fear of God

Then he pulled his family out of church right around when Sarah and Chris were getting into their late teens, because there was a chance they would meet other people their age and develop crushes/give away pieces of their hearts before marriage, and Steve believes that innocent youth group crushes are exactly the same as fornication and adultery. Oh, and also, their pastor was a football fan, and we all know Steve feels enjoying sports (or enjoying anything at all) is the next worst thing to genocide. That's when he started his one-man show at the nursing home. No theology training except his own neuroses and pathological obsession with death. The whole thing is so arrogant and twisted.

He didnt feel like working, so "god" magically purposed him to sit on his lazy ass, blog, act like he has a clue, and only get off his ass long enough to make some more kids.

The Maxwells work all right: :chores-laundry: :chores-laundry: , :chores-mop: , :chores-mowlawn: , :chores-vacuum: [ATTN Tech Support - we need a Uriah smiley]

The available background at their website refers vaguely to Steve establishing the home business, etc. which I'm assuming means he was in a profession like sales or something which then led to the Titus 2 industry.

What I want to know is whether or not he is actually a pastor and if so who made him one. In other words, are they attending the COTDRT?

Link to comment

Oh, no! College, even the most conservative Bible college on the planet (whatever that may be), is still worldy and depraved as far as Steve is concerned. Steve is a self-styled minister, I am 99.8% sure. As for his home business, he's mentioned doing database/coding work for the military before, and laying out yearbooks for them. He probably has enough private computer clients to keep them afloat, as long as the Titus2 business is also bringing in money.

How do these patriarchs defend against charges of incest? I mean, what else does it look like to keep your FEMALE daughters at home and obsess over who they will marry?

Incest isn't godly, so obviously they would never do it.

I mean, I assume. I don't know that they've ever addressed it, but if they did, I'm sure they'd be horrified. I'd be interested to hear someone confront Old Man Botkin.
