Growing Up Quiverful Kristina Miner - MERGED

Fascinating interview with this young woman who grew up in the Duggar's homeschool program, and shares her personal experience being raised just like the Duggars. It took her years to fully break free and do away with Gothard's belief system, though most of her family remain involved... This does give some hope that someday a few of the Duggar kids could break free too.

Watch out, though. There's a video at about 24 minutes which shows Michael Pearl demonstrating how to eat a child

I guess that's one way to keep the other kids in line. "See what happens when you demonstrate free will? Now, eat your vegetables. "

On a more serious note, It's great that someone was able to break free.

Thank you for sharing, this was fascinating. It's creepy to hear the same canned phrases that the Duggars use; further illustrates Kristiana's point of complete obedience and brainwashing. Her explanation of the umbrella metaphor was both interesting and upsetting. I hope her younger siblings are able to escape.

So where does ole Billy place himself in the umbrella, I wonder. I'd say under God but that's too far away from the feet.

I think eating the child would be kinder than being subjected to this man's parenting.

Dad takes anger out on the kids? MAKE LOVE!

The way he bellowed it out reminded me of this character Will Ferrell played on SNL.

I don't really want to watch the video after the whole eating your child notes

what exactly happens - is it like the movie Alive

because that is just wrong and creepy

I believe "eat" was a typo for "beat."    I watched the whole thing and Pearl spanks a cloth dummy or something like that to show how to beat kids when they cry etc.  No cannibalism.

This is super useful actually. I have had quite a few people ask me about my childhood in ATI/IBLP, Michael Pearl, etc. (and from there to the comforting confines of Vision Forum and the NCFIC, hah) and have suggested I do a Reddit AMA etc. Kristiana does a great job of explaining the tenets and essentially how it played out in family life, and this could be a great video to point people to concisely describing the environment.

Listening to it, it's like, this is exactly my experience, except I was the 2nd son, right after the oldest daughter, haha; and we avoided ever trying a homeschool group (as she said, it allows for outside input to the kids) and didn't get a college education. I'm really glad for her that she got a college education, however, and that she was able to use that to break free! And god, the Pearls are nauseating.

In a country with the highest percentage of it's population behind bars, often for minor offences, it is beyond me that the Pearls roam free. A presidential candidate that would promise to outlaw their book and send them off to a place where they will never encounter a minor has my vote.

Thank you for posting this. It was eye-opening. It was interesting to hear how people found their way to Gothard. I have done some reading on it and on other similar cults, but to hear first hand how a family becomes indoctrinated is fascinating and scary.

just about ready for bed here but I can't seem to shake something I noticed while watching Christiana during the interview and that is that even though she got out and escaped, she is quite obviously scarred and I'm sure those scars run deep. I am glad that she did not allow a cycle to form and that she seems to be raising her child differently.

(also the mere fact that she and others call themselves "survivors" is chilling to me. It makes me realize just how bad cults can be, especially for the kids that did not choose that life but were dragged into it.)

Sweet Merciful Zeus!

I'm really glad she broke free. Let us hope others will as well.

She seems to have such an enthusiastic and happy disposition, i can't imagine how hard it must've been growing up like that.

Thank you for sharing. It's kind of scary how difficult it was for her to get out in spite of a secular college education and a supportive husband from outside the cult.

There are just some things you cannot unsee. I have no idea how that does not constitute child abuse. Those people are creepy. The only thing he references other than beating is sex. It's no wonder.....

It's because taking a harmless toke of marijuana is a bigger crime than beating your child. The drug laws are way way way WAY more strict than the child abuse laws.

As a rather newbie with this, this was insightful to watch. Hearing it from someone directly was eye opening. I think the part about college was just so interesting, although her situation was not ideal by any means, her parents supported her going to a non-fundie college, and did actually think about what would happen if her husband died (or, had to go to reform camp for a porn addiction........or wherever hes at). Thank you for sharing this!

On the one hand, it's incredibly heartening to hear about people who have managed to get the hell out and find independence and happiness. I'm so glad that she seems to be in a good, happy place in her life now, though it came at a great personal cost.

On the other, this just makes me feel even more disheartened about the Duggars. Kristiana was so lucky to have parents who were willing to let her get a real education and socialize with people who weren't exactly like her. The Duggar girls have no such luck. Kristiana had the right ingredients for an escape; the Duggar girls really don't, and it will be much, much harder for them to do what Kristiana did.

Awesome share.  It was helpful to hear about her process of breaking free and to learn more about the extent of the cult's mind control.  Her parents made a big "mistake" when they let their daughter get an education.

Wow that was a great video. I hope it gets a lot more airtime/shares/etc.  It's been out 7 days and almost 13,000 views. I really hope it goes viral.

Like others, Kristiana has had the biggest opportunity to get out by going to college. It makes me more depressed for Duggars and Bates kids, (and I am sure 1000s more we don't know about). It also helps me understand how the Jeub girls can escape (exposed to others thru debate) and gives me a small glimmer of hope for the Rodriguii kids because their cousins seem to be not quite as hardcore (still fundie) and with all their travels hopefully the kids see a little different lifestyle (all fundie but not all quiverfull). It makes me very sad for Nurie as Kristiana described how she was studying Biology and then have to go change a sibling and make lunch, etc.

sounds like her 3 siblings below are either in college or graduated college so thankfully the parents haven't learned from their "mistake." I hope the parents allow the youngest 2 to attend also (I think she said she is the oldest of 6).

Great find- I think I should anonymously forward this video to some of my fundie-lite cousins who are starting to lean towards more extreme standards.

Do a FJ AMA lol

I watched that interview a few days ago and found it fascinating. She's lucky her parents valued education and let her go off to university. I'm glad she broke out, and I hope her younger siblings are able to as well.
