Reflecting (very briefly) about this and other things, it occurs to me that Steve & Terifying haven't done a very good job sheltering their kids from The World.

That means they've seen TV or animated features on the internet.

He has his family put on this godly, kindly, sincere act for the public because he knows it sells, but behind it all I can't help but think they're all drugged out, sex obsessed, and porn-addicted hedonists who love nothing more than fleecing their fans and laughing all the way to the bank. The problem is that the Maxwells shared this because they think it is actually good. Not just a sweet thing to do for his fiancée, which should have remained private, but as an example of their musicality and singing ability. Their band is awful and the girls can't sing either. Trust eeeeen Obey, anyone!

This family's singing is painful but they could probably improve with a few lessons from a competent professional. They will never do that because they think they are perfect and an example to others.

Yes, I totally get what you are saying. The kids certainly could become excellent examples of talent IF they could accept advice and feedback from people who actually know about things like writing, music, photography, etc.

Yes! As you can tell from the graphic I use on here, I think the BITE model explains many of the fundies we observe and how they maintain their control over their kids. It is sad and scary. The kids are being psychologically abused in my opinion.

Looking through the extended description of the BITE Model at the above link, there are 15 items under the Behavior Control heading. The Maxwells practice all fifteen of them.

Some of the items listed under Information Control do not apply. For example, the Maxwells don't have any "former members." But if they did, the grown children would surely be forbidden from associating with them.

Under Thought Control, the Maxwells haven't changed their names or identities the way some cult members do. I'm not sure about hypnotic techniques or planting false memories (although I wonder about Sarah's memories of negative experiences with peers as well as how the kids don't seem to remember when Teri took her depressive anger out on them). The rest of it's all there.

Finally, under Emotional Control there are a few items that have to be applied differently. There's something about making cult members feel that their family is deficient. Obviously, this is not Stevehovah! But he might be doing this type of thing with the daughters-in-law, or to impede his own children's relationships with extended family members. We don't know if he ever threatened to harm any of his kids if they ever choose to leave, so that item might not apply. Otherwise, yes, this is what Steve does.

Since the Maxwells have so little interaction with outside sources, it is understandable that the younger Maxwells would think that Joseph sounded great. They have nothing to compare it to. It is the same as Sarah's writing. There are a lot of wonderful Christian music that is safe and tame. I know the Maxwells take part in some public events like that Christimas thing they did but I don't recall them ever attending a public event just to watch. Does anyone else? I just wonder if they would ever go a Christian Christmas festival where there might be singing or anything like it. It seems as though they only go places where their are participants instead of passively enjoying the event. Oh wait, I forgot enjoyment is forbidden.

The Maxwells have former members. See the Muncks. I am certain no one in the Maxwwell family would be allowed to associate with them. I also think John Marie's family might count there, but we don't have enough information.

Also, they do change names, when there are similar names. NR Anna is called Anna Marie to differentiate her from Reversal Anna. Most families with multiple names don't require new members to change their names in some way.
