Covers: another music thread

After being bombarded with commercials for the new Lifetime movie, Deliverance Creek, I immediately sought out the Pat Benatar cover. I love new renditions when they're done well, and can stand on their own. I find most of them should have left well enough alone (I'm looking at you, :evil-eye: Jessica Simpson, for stomping all over Nancy Sinatra).

What are some of y'all's favorite covers? Which ones can't you stand?

Yay:

Placebo covering Kate Bush

Adele covering The Cure Love Song

Nay:

I'm probably gonna get flamed for this, Whitney covering Dolly Parton. :techie-hiding:

I got crucified on another board over the following list I posted!

I prefer Sublime's version of Scarlet Begonias over The Grateful Dead's

Cash's Hurt is way better than NIN's version

Social Distortion's Ring of Fire is better than Cash's

Smashing Pumpkin's Landslide is better than Fleetwood Mac's

Tori Amos' Landslide is better than Smashing Pumpkin's

Buckley's Hallelujah is better than Cohen's

Cake's I Will Survive is better than Gloria Gaynor's

Last Kiss is better by Pearl Jam

Simon and Garfunkel's Mrs Robinson is better than Sinatra's

The Lemmonheads Mrs Robinson is better than Simon and Garfunkel's

Killing Me Softly is better by the Fugees

Joe Cocker's A Little Help From My Friends is better than the Beatles

Cool list! Oh yeah, I totally forgot about Cash & the Fugees. I'm not familiar with all of these, and now I'm off to discover some new tunes.

^ I've had the exact same conversation with my son about those two songs

There was another one recently that he didn't know was a cover of an old song, but I can't think of it now, dammit.

I have to disagree on the Joe Cocker version of "With a Little Help From My Friends" being better than the Beatles.

I much prefer Civil Twilight's "Come As You Are" to Nirvana's original:

Thanks for this! Needed some new things on my Ipod.

I didn't know Seether had covered Careless Whisper. It's good.

(and yes, I'm old enough to know it was originally done by Wham)

Not trying to crucify you, but Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs Robinson" is the original. That is a Paul Simon song recorded for The Graduate soundtrack in 1968. Sinatra then covered it in 1969.

I'm really enjoying Lorde's version of "Everybody Want to Rule the World" that I heard in the Dracula Untold movie trailer.

I had to google it to see who was singing that version.

Tears for Fears sang the original in the 80's for you young whippersnappers.

I love Postmodern Jukebox! They cover pop songs as jazz, ragtime, and swing songs. I really like their covers of "Sweat Weather" as an Edith Piaf song and "Talk Dirty to Me" as a Klezmer style song.

i second the johnny cash version of "hurt". i also love kurt cobain's version of "the man who sold the world", as i think his gravelly voice is better suited to the content than david bowie's smooth voice.

And just for fun, this oddly hypnotic gem:

It's been said already, but Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah is fantastic. I submit the following two: (The first is a Cat Stevens song and the second belongs to Radiohead)

I completely forgot to post one of my favorite Björk covers done by Georgi Kay. This song was featured in "Top of the Lake."

My kid turned me on to this one (he didn't know it was a cover): My Darkest Days covers Duran Duran's Come Undone:

Also, Jerry Douglas and Mumford & Sons covering Simon & Garfunkel's The Boxer:

Also, as heard on Spotify but unable to find on Youtube: Jeffrey Foucault covering CCR's Lodi. REALLY good if you like today's folk rock. It's a shame I can't find a version on youtube (WTF Youtubers?)

I know there's a bunch I'm missing, so here's my current list.

Covers that I've liked: Personal Jesus/Marilyn Manson; Breed/Otep; Not To Touch The Earth/Otep; Land of Confusion/Disturbed; Look of Love/Diana Krall; Hurt/Johnny Cash; Vain/Marilyn Manson

Covers that nauseate me: Bridge Over Troubled Water/Josh Groban (not a fan of his anyways); Bringing On The Heartbreak/Mariah Carey (I truly wanted to stick a pitchfork in my head when I heard this)

I always like giving new music a try; after all, you might discover something new to like. However, some covers should never see the light of day. Just my humble opinion.
