Where to get tile for mosaic

I inherited a gorgeous side table from my great aunt. The only thing is, the top is all stained and discolored (the rest of the table is gorgeous any in good condition). I've decided I want to do mosaic tile on the top to cover the stains. I saw a show on HGTV where the guy broke tiles with a hammer and used the pieces to create a mosaic design. I tried going to Michaels to get tiles, but they only had tiny tiles. I also went to Home Depot, but they said I would have to order a case of tiles, and that would be far to many for the small side table. Do any of you FJers know where I could get some different colored subway tile to use?

They only sold them by the case. I need approximately 10-15 tiles.

Try a habitat for humanity resale shop--they sometimes have odd leftover project/building supplies (linky, not breaking: http://www.habitat.org/restores)

I've occasionally found them at the thrift store too.

If you have a stained-glass workshop near you, they ahve them--but they can be spendy.

And places that sell stained glass stuff online sometimes also have 'broken/salvage' assortments--like this: http://www.mosaicartsupply.com/broken-m ... tment.aspx

I work at a big box home improvement store. We definitely sell individual tiles.

Habitat ReStore is another great place.

Somebody told you something stupid. Of course you can buy single tiles/sheets. People buy samples to look at how tile would look on their walls. I have about a dozen in my kitchen right now.

You could also look online. I've been looking on here, and you could either pick a few sale sheets, or if the table isn't too big, do the sample thing, 5 for $10. he samples tend to be... oh, about 3x6". I also have 5 of those. ;-)
