Warren Jeffs has been keeping busy in jail.

 

According to one of his former jailers, the convicted child rapist masturbated more or less continuously while in custody. Rick Bradley, a guard at the county jail where Jeffs was kept in the weeks prior to his trial, told The Daily that the 55-year-old seemed to be suffering from sexual withdrawal and pleasured himself “a lot.†What does that mean, exactly — five times a day? More, Bradley said.

 

Fifteen times? “Sometimes more than that,†he told The Daily.

 

The guard said that the prisoner — who was not permitted conjugal visits — often played solo in full view of his guards. “We could see him,†Bradley said.

Call me naive or willfully ignorant, but before Warren Jeffs' abuses made it into the mainstream media over the past few years, I never realized that pedophilia was the driving force behind such a large part of the FLDS ethos. Sexual abuse, patriarchy, and polygamy? Yes. Pedophilia? I really had no clue. Was it like this before him, too? It's terrifying what can happen when such a sick individual is allowed so much power.

I am just glad that (barring be awarded a new trial or having his conviction over turned on a technicality) Warren Jeffs will be in jail for the next 35 years before he's eligible for parole. If he lives that long, he will be 90 and hopefully too old and addle pated to be a danger to anyone ever again.

Well, it's not that unusual for someone who has multiple convictions of sex crimes (or at least against children which is what my criminology teacher was talking about at the time).

Ok, yeah, gross, but couldn't he be doing to make himself look sick? So he can get an insanity verdict? Or maybe he really is sick - I mean, 15 times a day is not normal, I don't think. I'm kinda surprised a man his age can get it up 15 times a day, you know? Or maybe he has a secret stash of viagra.

Anyway, I mean, clearly he's batshit crazy, but maybe he's trying to make himself look crazier.

Also, ok, if he is really mentally ill (beyond just being a perverted bastard) what I don't understand is why people follow him. He must have a really engaging personality or something. Otherwise at some point, you'd think *someone* would have noticed that there was something terribly wrong with him.

That said, at one point I knew a guy who ran a cult, and he was certifiably crazy too, but I couldn't see it. I suspect that he had bipolar disorder, but I don't know for sure - something was def not right though. In my defense, I was about 15 and had had no experience with mental illness. Later on, another religious leader I met seemed nice until I got to know her and then I discovered the full force of her paranoia. At least then, I *knew* something wasn't right there (she was convinced that people were spying on her, that she was being followed/watched by the KGB which didn't exist any more, etc). So I guess sometimes an engaging personality can suck people in despite common sense? Hm.

On the tv show Sons of Anarchy, there's a minor character who kept jerking himself. Eventually some organized criminals cut all but his index fingers off (he's an accountant, one finger's all he needs for an adding machine), preventing him from continuing his behavior. If the jail Jeffs' in gets cable, perhaps someone will be inspired... Jeffs has caused so much suffering for his followers, this would make his days in prison that much harder for him (no pun intended).
