Half an apple isnt a good amount for anyone, is there anyone in the world who cant eat a full apple?

Well, and didn't God make the apple? Soooo, if it was the wrong size for one person, didn't He make a mistake? I know, I couldn't believe it when my friend told me how weird her MIL was about food. She was older so had gone through the depression and war years as a child, and I know a lot of people who survived all that ended up being very frugal, but the whole half-an-apple thing just blew my mind. "Don't cut that apple, dear, unless you've got someone else to share it with!".

lol I realise the irony in picking up on an unrelated snippet of information regarding an apple when we're talking about portion control.

Priorities, I haz them.

My grandparents use to halve sticks of gum and leave them in a basket in the kitchen drawer :cray-cray:

Ummm...I'm one that only eats half an apple. I usually slice one up with an apple slicer (because I hate biting out of it) and share 1/2 with my 11yo. Also, I half my gum slices because I think a mouthful of gum is kinda gross. I also usually skip dessert, which most people think is crazy, but it's not that I'm watching my diet or anything - I honestly do not have a sweet tooth and if I'm not really hungry, I can't stomach dessert (or anything for that matter). Period. Overly sweet foods do not appeal to me.

That said, I don't portion control on purpose or give my kids miniscule amounts of food - it's just how I roll.

I want Faithful Lettuce Chopper for my next post count status.

So what does a lettuce chopper have to do to lose its faithful status?

Not smile creepily while doing it.

Throw the cutting implement at the nearest person, snatch the car keys, and drive off into the sunset.

Poor Sarah. We can only dream...

I'm similar to you, I think - not a big sweet food person either. If I'm going to get fat, it will be on savory potato-based items... and rather than dessert, I'll have seconds on whatever the side is at dinner ;) I also cut up apples, though I'll eat a whole one once it's cut up. Too many apples in the market manage to have thick skin but not be so crunchy inside anymore, which for me is just the WORST combination.

Back to the Maxwells, they definitely seem to be making some version of Mexican food in every meal, don't they?

Someone mentioned roast chicken upthread, I'll admit I eat roast chicken at least once a week BECAUSE it's so easy to make. Particularly if you don't use a whole chicken but instead just get one of those "family-size" packages of chicken thighs (I like dark meat). It makes leftovers, all the better (and I will eat one thigh per meal - none of this "two chicken breasts feeds 11" stuff).

A bit off-topic, but I went back on their blog to almost a year ago when the big wedding-cancellation happened, and it's still there! As well as the comments on the post below of Joseph's house construction. Interesting.......I guess after almost a year, they "forget about it"? Or pretend to? Well, I always say at least a year between relationships is best, for healing and re-evaluation. So, Joseph soon should be ready to get into a new relationship if one is available. But, time will tell just how possible that is in light of it all.

Incorporate weird, foreign, never-before-heard-of-in-Maxhell greens into the salad mix. You know, things like romaine, escarole, frisee, Belgian endive, arugula...lions and tigers and bears, oh my! :o :o :o

I don't usually eat dessert either - not because I'm dieting, as with you, but just because I....don't.

That would be completely defrauding and you know it. Off to the prayer closet with you!

I wonder what she and her siblings dream. Some of it might not quite qualify as cheerful obedience.

I imagine their dreams are either boring-dreaming of dusting the ceiling fans, mopping floors and reading the Bible, or full of awful scary things about Hell and death (or symbolic ones, like dreaming of being locked up somewhere)

Savory foods are definitely my downfall. One of our favorite family restaurants is an all-you-can-eat seafood buffet at a local casino. Everyone eats their salad, seafood, and then chooses from the array of desserts available. Not me, though - I eat a salad and then fill up on snow crab. My "dessert" is a cup of black coffee.

Count me in as another person who prefers savory over sweet. I rarely have dessert and when I do, I'd rather have something tart. When it comes to something like chocolate, I can totally take it or leave it, usually leave it. I'd rather have cheese and bread (I'm a serious hobbyist bread baker) over ice cream or cake any day. And guess what, Stevie? I actually DO crave things like salads and brussels sprouts. So there.

Me too!!! I serve a salad nearly every day and if I don't, I start craving it. Yesterday my family was all away and I was by myself so I made what I was really craving - a huge bowl of steamed broccoli! I would have never gotten by with serving only that for supper to my family, but it was exactly what I was wanting. (That, plus a glass of wine...)

They don't mention whether Stevie was in on the surprise. I would think the way they ration food in their household, the "kids" would have had to obtain permission from him to use any of the supplies, wouldn't they?

And four streamers, yes. You can only have four. No more.

And I think little Joshua is cute, what with all the plastic foods in his overalls pockets. But then I had to do a double-take on the photo of him holding the blue bottle. Looks like a bottle of Mylanta.

ETA: And, Jesse forgot to shave for the event. And him reading "Where's Baby Bear?" to Joshua is an interesting pick. I wonder if the book has been altered (like they used to alter piano music to blot out the heathen words) so that at the end, Baby Bear is found in the prayer closet at the elderly home during a conference eating an animal cookie and a stolen burrito and thinking about death.

LMAO

I thought it was very interesting that NR Anna suggested a girls tea party (something different) for the party but they "expanded" it to include everyone (meaning they took away what was different about the idea and made it what Birthdays always are). My guess is that the headship would not allow an event that did not include him.

I never actually got the impression that the Maxwells don't eat enough. They have surprisingly nice kitchen gadgets (definitely not the bare minimum), they seem to bake a lot and eat desserts somewhat regularly. The animal cracker incident was when Steve was on a diet, so it wasn't a regular occurrence (of course it's still ridiculous that his family couldn't have dessert on his birthday because he was on a diet). When you look at their birthday celebrations now, they seem to have lots of rich desserts. That said, their portion sizes are definitely not big and they probably never ever overeat, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I looooove brussels sprouts. Just steamed, with a bit of salt and pepper on. They're super cheap at the market on sale, a big bag of flash frozen ones can be had for $1 or $2. Little water in the bottom of a bowl, nuke a few minutes, done.

They are the standard veggie that goes with the roast chicken on lazy Sundays...

Yummmmmm, brussels sprouts. I cook mine in chicken or veggie broth. Delish! We buy them on the stock from the local farmer's market when they are in season.

A birthday party with "all the relatives"? I guess that, once the kids marry, they, their spouses, and their kids are demoted to "relatives." And here I was expecting people other than the Core Contingent.
