I just have to say that as a semi-professional proofreader who happens to be just OCD/anal enough that I get well and truly distracted by other people's grammar and spelling mistakes, I'm quite pleased that I have refrained from commenting on this thread. ;)

Oh wait, I guess now I haven't, after all. :o

I have a dim memory of Michelle saying that one wonderful part of their home-schooling is that they (can) turn any situation into a teaching situation..... In which case her grammar should be perfect at all times :wink-kitty:

I think it's about time Dim-Bulb got his hair did.

And his sperm-carrying tubes (vas deferens?) snipped.

for me, what's worse than "she did good" is when dimbulb says "we should have went" and "they could've came". (shudder)

I think they'd rather turn any situation into a plug for huge families and Jesus.

They already are turning every situation into a teaching situation. Having all those kids, making the J'Slaves do her mothering work, being so.freaking.controlling, not even letting anyone do anything without a sibling to chaperone... it's all teaching those kids how NOT to live! (Even if they don't realize it now!)

Boob's grammar is horrific; far worse than Michelle’s.

During the marriage counselor episode he said something along the lines of "Michelle and I's marriage....."

Most of the kids do a little better, but I’ve noticed Joy in particular takes after dear old dad in the language department.

I don't like visiting19K FB anymore. It is getting full of rabid fans especially when the subject of midwifery comes up. They forget modern medical science saved Josie.

I love the 19kids FB page as I get to snark to the leg humpers with glee. Most does go over their heads though or I get but this is their page not TLC's which is hilarious or I'm training to be just like Jill and Jana yeah right.

Oh one of them prefers the Gothard cult to real life now that is scary shit right there.

I agree Jim boob needs his tubes tied though.

How does Gothard get people to sign on with his program? Is there some advertising done to get them interested? Or is it more a word-of-mouth thing?

The Duggars do not use every out as a TEACHING opportunity. For all the examples, the only thing that I remember being taught is that King James wrote KJV of the bible in a year which is so incorrect.

I believe much of the recruitment is done through modeling. Even before outsiders attend these conferences, they might observe a "happy, hard-working, Godly family," and will ask how the family does it. The "model" family might invite the outsiders over for dinner, where a clean home, happy homemaker wife, and well-behaved children who are immaculately groomed are put on display for the visitors. From there, discussion turns toward JOY, the Bible and many of the principles of Vision Forum. Outsiders admire the standards established by the model family and may decide they want in, so they get more information and are encouraged to attend their first conference, never guessing the oppression and corruption that lies within.

RazingRuth talked about it several times in her blog posts.

I have a former coworker who got into the cult by the home schooling component. He was shocked that I knew what ATI was. He's a normal guy with deep ties to Christianity. His wife was an educated certified teacher. Unfortunately, through ATI conferences, their daughter (an only child) got the fundy hook. She married a guy with 10 sisters (and one bathroom, which coworker noted a a badge of honor) and that sealed her fate. She turned down a full scholarship to college for marriage and I'm sure she's well on her fundy way of over breeding.

I think her parents were shocked at how quickly she got into Gothardism. They aren't that fundy...religious but more main stream. ATI totally got her deeper into that world.

Don't forget about perpendicular. Or when they went to that historic home (was it the Vanderbilt's?) and they learned about shapes and colours.

I also think parents want to keep their kids from the usual problems like teen pregnancy, porn, drugs etc maybe because they had these problems. They see families like the Duggars keeping their kids from them and want to imitate it. Even if they never had these issues, many QF/ATI parents are made to feel their lives were less than ideal rather than normal teen behavior.

I was trawling for blogs about Gothard's Vessels of Honour program and ran across one interesting one. (I'd love to link it since it's out of this world but I can't since the blogger is only 15).

Anyway, this girl's two older brothers seem to have gone off the rails in the way some teenagers do, but the conservative Christian parents seem to have taken it way harder than what the average secular parents would and have signed up their younger two daughters to ATI because it looks like it guarantees good, Christian (non rebellious ) teens.
