Ummm.... I kind of know these people.

Not personally, but I grew up in the midst of northern NSW hippy culture and my parents and sister are still heavily involved in it. Although i no longer live there i know this family by sight.

They are certainly on the fringes of even the fringe. If my sister brought them home to my parents my mother would be secretly disapproving and the middle class woman inside her would be wanting to bathe the kids and brush their hair and give them a good meal and an education. And my mother raised me in the bush with only solar power, no hot running water and a garden devoted partly to veggies and partly to my father's dope crop. She is now a professional tarot reader and teacher (and all round wise woman :? ) and my father runs a head shop. They are well and truly entrenched in the local alternative community.

But that first generation to drop out brought educated middle class values from the city and applied it to their children. We were fed regularly. Maybe we were fed very crunchy organic veggo fare, but there was breakfast and lunch and a hot meal at night where we sat at a table and manners were expected. Not just me, all my peers. We were educated. Maybe it was at home, maybe it was at a community school, but education was highly valued, and those of us that have wanted to have had no difficulties gaining higher education and integrating into the mainstream. Some have achieved very highly. We were clean and socialised. Our mother's middle class backgrounds would not tolerate anything less, even if they had dropped off the grid. The kids at the local high school always teased us hippie kids about our "posh" accents.

But the next generation, both born to it and from the cities, is different. My sister is part of that. They want to go more radical and they have no real grounding in mainstream culture to guide them in what it is wise to question and reject and what has value and should be retained. I see it in Lauren, my sister, this Helena, and many other second and third wave hippie mothers. They don't educate, because they never chose the mainstream and can't contemplate why their children would. They don't value routine and structure, because they see it as something their parents forced on them, not something their parents valued enough to retain when they dropped out.

I'm rambling, and I could go on forever, this is one of my pet subjects. But I fear for the kids of see couples, and the hippie matriarchs do too, but they are usually busy trying to give their grandchildren some security and structure and subsidising the children who choose this life, and don't have much energy left for the wider community.

I would love to know more. I am fascinated by Hellena and Currawong as well as Lauren and David. I am fascinated by the lifestyle and the beliefs they have. There aren't many hippies in northern industrial Canada...

AND masturbated. In front of the midwives and whoever else was there. Honestly - I've thought, during pregnancy, that if I went for a VBAC, I would probably try that to get things going and to help with the pain. In a locked room, with no one else in there. I kind of squirmed with embarrassment when I thought of using Ina May Gaskin's advice to "smooch" and make out during labor, and have my husband stimulate my breasts and nipples, but that seems utterly tame compared to this.

I still cannot get over the fact that she is okay with having sex AFTER her membranes have ruptured. The FUCK??? I've had pPROM twice - one sealed up after a week, one didn't. I managed to avoid infection for over 3 months the second time, but NOTHING went near my coochie except for toilet paper that was as sterile as possible (you can bake it, and then keep it in a sealed plastic bag, and stash it somewhere where no one will contaminate it by accident). Oh, and a few sterile spec exams. Those are FUN - it's like a pelvic exam, but without a single drop of lube on that speculum. I have reason to freak when I read shit like this, but seriously, even before any of that happened, sex after ruptured membranes is something that would have sounded insane to me.

What is "raw sex", anyhow? Is that code for "no condom"? That's what I'm guessing, but if I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me.

Hellacious always has sexy times when she is in labor.

Uncooked sex? Sex that doesn't go over a certain temperature, like raw vegans won't eat anything that's been heated above a certain temp?

This is some truly AWESOME cray. It is 2:30 AM EST and I have to go to work in the morning. Yet I can't seem to get enough of the Hellena and Currawong Show. Who needs cable?

For the same reasons as Ms Roast Sitter and Lauren of Sparkling Adventures are talked about I guess. They are simply snarkworthy and overshare to an insane degree so there is plenty to snark on.

Also, the hardcore alternative life stylers have a lot in common with fundies, such as taking everything to extremes, a smug certainty that their way is the only right way, and a pride in their otherness.

For the first time we're snarking on fundies who live close to me! I haven't read much yet but there's been several mentions of places within 30 minutes drive of me in SA. My family, whilst very Anglo middle class has "alternative" tendencies and is pretty creative and community-minded. There's a few hippie type communities around the place, usually near the two Steiner schools in the area. I spent one eventful evening singing songs and chatting with a bunch of teenagers in a teepee on a commune. It blew my private-school, privileged little mind! :D I wonder if those people knew of this family.

Willing to answer questions about South Australia if they come up - still excited that I recognize locations in the pics!

I am really struggling with the "spelling" of her children's names... Awful.

Oohhh! Where are you located (general area if you want to preserve anonymity, or feel free not to say!)? I'm 20 min from Gawler, in Hamley Bridge. How exciting to have another FJer in the same state...

Hellena claims to have been brought up in an "apocalyptic fundamentalist cult," so I think we can look at her as a cautionary tale. Can you imagine one of the Duggar girls fucking and masturbating her way through labor in her inflatable kiddie pool? Or posting nude pictures of herself and her headship on the internet? Or knitting weird-ass "hats" that make people look like extras in Avatar? Man, their ratings would soar!

Any ideas about what this cult she's talking about might be?

Growing up in an apocalyptic fundamentalist cult, I’ve been thinking about ‘the end days’ for most of my life. Even after leaving my childhood religion, I came across channellers, and mystics, and talk about the ‘great wave of consciousness’ and all the 2012 conspiracies. And now we’re here. And the most curious thing has happened! I’ve always contemplated a future after ‘the shit hit the fan’ as being mostly agrarian based. Primitive. No electricity or technology. Hard work. And Currawong’s been having this love affair with science, and in the last couple of months, for the first time ever in my life, I’ve been dreaming of a future after whatever shift is on it’s way has happened, with science and technology and a quasi mystical science, that creates things based on cohesion and harmony with the environment rather than money. Sustainability rather than greed.

Despite the warnings I was not quite prepared for the nude pictures. There are tasteful nudes and then there is that. Making it black and white doesn't make it any better.

Oh ugh! She's selling some of her stuff on Etsy, including this "bird cape"

First, she's asking $420 US for it.

Second, on her blog she says she wore it while birthing her latest kid, but there's no mention of that fact on Etsy.

When you buy clothing on Etsy, is there an understanding that you might be getting something that the creator (sorry, creatrix) sweated all over and possibly had sex in? Somehow I doubt she had it dry-cleaned. Shouldn't there be a warning that the item is used?

A bunch of the other stuff on Etsy is pre-worn also. By her lice-ridden family.

What do these people do for money?! A part of me would love to flitter around dressed all in one color, naming my kids wacky names all while making fiber art, but we have bills to pay!

Did anyone explain what raw sex is? Because I honestly do.not.know.

I took it to mean "wild monkey sex." Uninhibited, down and dirty. You know, just the sort of thing labor puts you in the mood for.
