Prohibition also had the effect of setting back the progress of American cuisine for most of the century--quality restaurants that served food meant to go with wine closed, speakeasies couldn't focus on food, and the surviving restaurants had to survive by dumbing down their food selections for children. That, coinciding with the industrialization of food, resulted in the proliferation of crappy processed food.

I imagine that Barbara Lester is one of the people screaming for religious exemptions for insurance coverage of birth control. Does that mean that Catholics and Jews could get a religious exemption for wine, or would they not because they are the wrong religion?

Jews and Catholics are heathens don't you know. Their use of wine for religious purposes is evidence of that.

I'm amazed at how little these Americans know about history. Its truly shocking and disgusting.

Dear Barbara; I know it's not likely on your approved viewing list, but just 10 minutes of Boardwalk Empire on HBO Sunday nights should go a long way in disabusing you of the notion of a Utopian, alcohol-free American society.

Seriously, do these people know anything at all about American history?
