I think we could suggest some new Moody books to Sarah and the Maxwells!

* The Moodys Go To The Food Bank (because they're too stubborn to get the food stamps they're entitled to)!

* The Moodys Learn About Porn (because Mamma found pr0n on Daddy's laptop)!

* The Moodys Learn About Divorce and Child Custody!

* The Moodys Take a Serious Bible Class (and not that fundy crap)!

* The Moody Women (NOT GIRLS) Learn To Sew Something Besides Frumpers!

* The Moodys Get Visits from Child Protective Services and the Humane Society!

* The Moodys Cook Meth to Supplement Their Income!

I'm sure you all can come up with even more! (And yes, I'm evil and headed straight to hell, thanks for asking.)

How about The Moodys Take In A Foster Child and Learn That Life is Shit For Some People

Or The Moodys Deal With Max's Identity as Maxine.

What about a whole Moody book about finding Daddy's sunglasses under the seat of the bus?? That would be a real spellbinding tale of intrigue

From an excerpt I read it seems like the Moodys like to "save" try to annoningly convert people to their cult even if the people don't want to. Is it really so bad if somebody doesn't want to be saved? If Sarah got more exposure to the outside world and some non-Biblical literature and writing classes; I could see her starting off as a much better writer. Her grammar and spelling seem ok to me (I may be incorrect because these are excerpts after all) but I just have this feeling that if she was allowed to explore out of her fundie bubble her writing wouldn't be so wishful of what she think families should be like that the Moody's are unrealistically happy all the time (like the Duggars seem to appear on their show when they're not) and dry.

The characters are cardboards cut-outs of what fundies think are good wholsome Christian tropes. Add some depth to your characters; Sarah. Like; what if 1 of the siblings was a closeted bisexual, gay, lesbian, or transgender but still wanted to be Christian and believe in God with Jesus but thought their family would disown them? Or if 1 of the girls didn't want to get married and go to public shool, if 1 of the kids wanted to join the military, if 1 of the kids was curious about other religions from their perspective; if 1 of them was interested in evolution/science and wanted to pursue a career in that area; or if Mrs.Moody didn't want to have any more kids and just give the attention to her already existing 1s? If she wanted to make her own decisions when it came to her what she wanted? If 1 of them were agnostic/atheist?

If 1 of them had a disability? If a son wanted to be a SaHD? If 1 of the kids wanted to go to public school? If 1 of them was a Christian feminist? If a son was a feminist? If 1 of the kids wanted to have protected sex before marriage? If a kid asked about the birds and the bees?

How would the fundie Moodys accept their family members if 1 of these situations were to happen in their character devolopment? P.S: This may be a stupid question, but are the Maxwells friends with the Duggars? Sarah seems to be naming everybody in the Moody family with a M name. Or is she just influenced by them? Sorry for the long rant. * *

Evangelical Christians believe that the unsaved will go to Hell when they die. So yes, it really is so bad if somebody doesn't want to be saved.

The Moody books are targeted toward elementary-aged children. I think Sarah feels that her characters must always set a good example for her young readers.

Like; what if 1 of the siblings was a closeted bisexual, gay, lesbian, or transgender but still wanted to be Christian and believe in God with Jesus but thought their family would disown them? I don't think the Moody book readers are old enough to understand some of these topics. The oldest of the Moody siblings is only 11 or 12, so they're not at the point where they would be thinking seriously about joining the military or getting married. But it would be more interesting if Sarah gave one of the characters a disability (even a mild learning disability) or included a chapter where one of the Moody kids expressed a desire to attend public school.

Actually, since Spring Days is taking long enough to come out I looked at the repetitive book titles and came up with a possible new one, Spring Break with the Moodys: The merry Moodys travel to Cancun, Mexico close to Easter time to spread the word of Jesus but are in for a culture shock when MTV Spring Break invades the vicinity. Max must repress his desire for the winner of the wet T-shirt contest he spots while witnessing, and instead settles for waiting for just the right moment to slip her a tract with his phone number written on the back. The twins get lost in the crowd and are accidentally swapped out for two adorable Mexican toddlers, but Mom and Dad never notice. Mollie has a secret hope of being able to go swimming in something other than a WholesomeWear frumper. The book ends with two surprises and oh yes, plenty of excitement!

The terrible blandness that is the Moody books slightly makes me want to write fundie kid literature with character development and interesting writing and stuff. And then slip subversive messages in veiled by godly fundie speak. Like: "It was Mary's 18th birthday. She knew that worldly girls considered themselves to be independent adults at 18, and could move away from home, with lots of government resources available to them (see page 312), but blessedly Mary was a godly woman who understood that she had been purposed by the Lord to serve her family at home."
