  1. Has anyone watched Warren Jeffs: Prophet of Evil? It is an A&E documentary. A couple of the of the former FLDS were previously on Escaping Polygamy. (Rachel Jeffs, Isaac Jeffs) It was a good documentary. I have read several books and the nice thing about this documentary was that it put all the stories together in the timeline. It told how the people in short creek didn't know about Eldorado nor Pringle or the other properties (Colorado & Canada). Besides the abuse, it talked about Warren hiding from the feds, talked about the raid on YFZ ranch and what the feds found (all the birth records, etc). It also went more into how Warren raised to power. Which I have read in other books but it was interesting to hear from other voices on how it all fit together. The documentary also talked about the lost boys suing for control of the FLDS land trust (UEP) and that many (including Elissa Wall) have moved back and trying to take back the town. One of them said that more and more are waking up and the people leaving call it "waking up" to the truth. The school is flourishing (which FJ has talked about before). Out of all the cults, I think this one might actually be dying out. It will still take another generation. The good news is the education, education is the one way to break out of cults and that is why these fundies and cults heavily deny education. Cult leaders can't have the people thinking! I do wish the prison would put more restrictions on access to Warren by the followers. If you haven't seen the episode I highly suggest watching it.
  2. Trigger Warning - Sexual abuse The information coming out is new and still just allegations at this point. This article is quite upsetting, this is a lawsuit filed this afternoon by the same lawyers who represented Elissa Wall. The unidentified victim, now 21, alleges starting at the age of 8 she would be whisked from her home SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK, to secret locations to be sexually assaulted by several FLDS leaders in ritualistic ceremonies until the age of 12. She later became a scribe to document the sexual abuse of other very young girls. The lawyers claim that during a police raid, records were seized from an FLDS temple that support her claims. No charges have been filed and no news of any criminal investigations at this point as these allegations have just come to light. This article really hurt my heart. http://www.sltrib.com/news/2017/12/28/after-polygamist-leaders-used-underage-girls-for-sex-lawsuit-says-one-teen-was-forced-to-be-a-scribe-for-the-rituals/
  3. The latest lawsuit is over child labor. The company claims the children were just picking/gleaning the fallen pecans with the other family members. I wonder if Pecan theft and family were there too. Full article: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/11/13/court-hears-utah-child-labor-case-tied-to-polygamous-group.html
  4. Rachel Jeffs (33), one of Warren Jeffs' daughters and author of her new book "Breaking Free", is being interviewed by Megyn Kelly for Dateline. She was sexually abused by Warren Jeffs as a child and teen and was forced into an arranged marriage in her teens and decided to escape after Warren Jeffs ordered her, from prison, to be banished from her five children for months at a time. Although she did grow to love that husband, he refused to leave and is still committed to Warren Jeffs. She's remarried (to a Blackmore) and is very happy in her new life. Megyn Kelly grates on my very last nerve, but this is a good show and I'd like to read her book: Breaking Free: How I Escaped Polygamy, the FLDS Cult, and My Father, Warren Jeffs
  5. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/nov/08/its-a-revolution-polygamist-sect-loses-power-over-utah-town-for-first-time The backlash against the FLDS is growing.
  6. Orson William Black Jr. was captured yesterday in the state of Chiuahua, Mexico, and is being held pending investigation of the September murder of two of his sons and a third young man from their small community. Four of his wives and about 20 other undocumented Americans are also being detained. Black, who was raised in the FLDS, went off the rails (if the FLDS can be considered 'on the rails') and created his own little culty offshoot in the 80s/90s. He fled the United States 15 years ago after being charged with multiple felony counts of sexual conduct with a minor precipitated by his 'marriage' to two VERY underage girls, Beth and Roberta Stubbs, who were 12 and 13 year old sisters. He was featured on America's Most Wanted in 2003. He is connected in some way to most FLDS families. His legal wife was/is a Barlow, he married Stubbs and Pledger girls, and I believe his mother was a Wyler, so he's related to the Chatwins as well. His younger sister, Shirley Karma Black, was one of Winston Blackmore's wives who has since left him (though she was not underage at the time of that marriage, as has sometimes been reported). There is lots more info out there, but I think this is the best of the articles covering recent developments. http://www.sltrib.com/news/polygamy/2017/11/06/mexico-detains-polygamist-with-utah-connections-his-4-wives-in-murder-investigation/
  7. https://geneticliteracyproject.org/2017/10/18/polygamy-genetics-short-creek-utahs-inbreeding-mutation-epidemic/ This article popped up on my Facebook Newsfeed yesterday. They're seeing a cluster of a rare childhood genetic disorder in Short Creek.
  8. So, I follow Brenda Nicholson on Facebook. She and her husband left the FLDS with their kids, he hadn't taken a second wife yet, when the whole "chosen people" thing came out where they decided who was worthy and everyone else was dog shit. Today she posted this video. The man seems confused as to why he even got a letter from Warren Jeffs, and I'm glad he stopped taking a drink every time he read "amen". I don't think he would have made it otherwise... All I have to say is ummmmmm.... How does this get read in church? I don't think there's enough kool-aid on the planet for this to make sense. Also, what is he taking? I made more sense on acid, just sain'.
  9. Anyone see this article? http://www.sltrib.com/home/5257669-155/former-plural-wife-in-utah-seeks Summary - Sarah Allred is seeking birth certificates for her youngest 2 children born in the compound in SD. Born 2008 & 2010. Warren Jeffs didn't want any birth certificates from SD because he was trying to keep the compound secret. The attorney helping Sarah said this is a very difficult case. Rep Tim Goodwin says children without birth certificates shouldn't be allowed. SD doesn't have a penalty for not registering a birth, he is suggesting SD should have a penalty. IIRC "Escaping Polygamy" goes to that compound because a sister of one of the women at the compound is in isolation there. From google maps the compound is surrounded by mountains. I know we have talked about this compound before. It was over water rights and the town caved on inspecting the compound.
  10. So I think there is an FLDS family in my area. I have to say I am surprised since I don't live in Utah. Does anyone know much about smaller sects or singular families going off on their own?
  11. I've been really enjoying the Year of Polygamy podcast recently and highly recommend it to anyone interested in the subject. The woman who does it has done some great interviews lately, including a recent one with a current FLDS member. I'd be really curious to see what you all think of that one in particular, because there were definitely moments that annoyed me because it seemed to glorify the FLDS.
  12. At 8pm EST tonight (10/7/16) there is a new "This is Life with Lisa Ling" (on HLN, in my area) starting soon. She interviews 2 of Warren Jeffs children. The summary doesn't say which ones (there are 100+ potential). Stay tuned!
  13. I've never made a topic before but I just watched this and found it very interesting so I thought I would go ahead and share it on here so we could discuss!
  14. A few members of my husband's family attended this celebration. Always glad to see progress. Little things like this are not usually picked up by anything but the local media. here is a link to the local online newspaper and a video. http://www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/archive/2016/07/03/ccj-an-evolving-short-creek-celebrates-freedom/#.V3li9jh_waI (unrelated note, I'm not sure when you look at the article if you see the same sponsors, my sponsor is Dr. Empey. he is my mom's dr and his son was badly hurt in the Brusells attacks. I have been totally impressed with how he has countined to care for his elderly patients that need him in our rural area while his son is recovering in another city)
  15. I'm always looking for a good book by former members of the FLDS and other groups of Fundamental Mormonism, and it seems like I'm always missing some. So I thought, with the help of fellow FJers, we could compile a list? I'll start with all the ones I know, then I'd love for others to have a running list, especially as new books are released. 16. First - I am so excited this forum popped up just as I finished Carolyn jessop' Escape and flora jessop's church of lies (thanks to the posters for the excellent recommendations from the babyland thread, btw!) carolyns daughter Betty returns to the flds when she turns 18 at the end of the book - and i found this incredibly disturbing. does anyone know what ended up happening to her? I know from threads here and Internet searching that she was in the media a lot in 2008, claiming she was happy (but unmarried and basically working as a servant at a construction site). What happened after her father was excommunicated? Does anyone know if she ever got married? The only recent info I could find that mentioned her was from Carolyn jessop's weddingknot site, where she was listed as "unable to attend" the 2015 wedding, which I assume means she is still in the flds. (https://www.theknot.com/us/brian-moroney-and-carolyn-jessop-apr-2015 - awesome to see that the other kids are all out of the flds and doing well, though!) wondering if anyone here is better at Google-fu than I am and has any other update on Betty. :/
  17. http://www.sltrib.com/home/3862919-155/former-child-bride-onetime-polygamous-trust Former child bride Elissa Wall, who was forced to marry her 19-year-old cousin when she was just 14, has settled for $2.75m in the $40m lawsuit she brought against the FLDS trust. Life changing for her; still not sure it's received the publicity it deserved. Not sure how I feel about this outcome. Regardless, I'm glad Elissa is healthy and happy and doesn't have children from that marriage to further complicate things. ETA: I would love to see us have a Quiver Full of Fundamentalist Mormons sub forum. There is so much to talk about, but it does get rather lost in everything else when anything comes up here.
  18. I think most Fjers know that polygamous Mormon sects are hotbed of incest, since many of these communities were founded by a handful of families who have intermarried over the past century or so, but this article really shows the human impact of these practices: https://broadly.vice.com/en_us/article/tiny-tombstones-inside-the-flds-graveyard-for-babies-born-from-incest?utm_source=broadlyfbusads It's a very long article, but worth your time, because it shows how the FLDS victimizes people even in utero by passing on genes that are very often incompatible with life, yet many FLDS members think their bloodlines are super special and "pure." You see the same dynamic going on with the Kingston clan, which is even more closed and incestuous, as if such a thing can be imagined.
  19. Not a good week for the FLDS I guess. Please remove if posted elsewhere, but it seems there's a civil case against these two communities. Jeffs' former body guard/attack dog has turned: http://www.cnn.com/2016/02/25/us/jessop-flds-warren-jeffs-short-creek/index.html
  20. I am THRILLED! *doing a happy dance* http://www.sltrib.com/news/3571913-155/polygamous-church-leaders-indicted-arrested-for
  21. Several of my husband's brothers live and work in the Colorado city area and tonight there is suppose to be a big rally to protest the recent (very obvious) corruption in policing/politics/land rights. It is suppose to have all the communities out there coming together, Hildale, Colorado city, cane Beds and all faiths, not just FLDS, but the many non FLDS that live out there (like my BIL's) and AUB. There is suppose to be some real news coverage. Colorado city is landlocked so far from the county seat, I hope that the AZ government will finally step in and end this craziness. The area IMO could really grow, having a state college, cheap housing and cheap cost to do business. It could be a real fresh start for many if the few corrupt still left could leave. It will be interesting to watch it unfold tonight. http://www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/archive/2015/10/24/ccj-short-creek-residents-organize-public-rally-against-flds-corruption/#.VivdYWBq3ug There is a facebook link on the bottom of the article that has local FLDS and non- FLDS already discussing the issues.
  22. Did anyone else watch this? It's about two of Warren's kids who left the FLDS. They both say they were victims of child sexual abuse by Warren.
  23. This is our only real local southern Utah news source, so I hope it is okay to post a link. I saw a few polygamist families moving in with some former polygamists in a subdivision near me yesterday. Then I found this story. It is interesting they won't pay $100 a month to stay. It is going to be very hard to find housing for all these families. Right now to find a decent 3 bedroom house in a safe neighborhood in St George is $1500 + . I just worry about the kids living conditions getting worse with so many families living in one house. At least the schools in St George I have experience with have been awesome at catching the kids up and helping them fit in. If it were not for the last names I would have never known some of my son's classmates were "FLDS homeschooled" up until a few years ago. Just seeing that half finished home exterior in the video, a family has been living in for 20-30 years to avoid taxes..ugh! FLDS evictions
  24. Charlene Jeffs, actual legal wife (of many sister wives) of Lyle Jeffs, warrens brother who now leads the sect, is divorcing him and fighting for custody of the minor kids. I think there are two minors left out of a large brood. Should be fascinating!
  25. On Oprah's Where Are They Now (March 22), Willie Jessop, Warren Jeffs's former head of security, does a 180 and now suddenly realizes that Warren Jeffs was a pedophile. This episode was cool because it flashed back to Oprah visiting YFZ in 2009 with Willie Jessop defending Warren Jeffs at the time, interviews with the kids, and so on. It's very creepy to watch knowing what we all know now. (link not broken because oprah.com) http://www.oprah.com/own-where-are-they ... effs-Video This episode has a lot of information about Warren Jeffs's trial and then features Willie playing Barney Fife and actually talking to these girls and seeing the evidence from the Texas trial. Willie had no idea until he heard the tapes. Willie didn't know about the group sex, or the underage girls, or the beds in the temple or anything really. Obviously. The most interesting thing is that Willie claims pretty much his whole family is still FLDS and so are the girls who involved in all of this. Even with all of this mess, it was a big deal for him to leave, go public, and be excommunicated. So good for him, I think.
