I'm signed in but I can't view any forums?  What do I do now?

if you are signed in and can't see any of the forums there is a problem with your account.  PM Curious, Destiny31, or HappyAtheist to resolve the situation.

How do I go to the first unread post in a topic?

Topics with unread posts will have either a circle or star to their immediate left,  Click on the circle/star to take you to the first unread post in that topic.

there is a solid line separating the last post you'd read previously and the ones yet unread.

*stars indicate that you have posted in that thread, circles that you have not.

How do I PM people?

There are several ways to send another member a PM:

* Messages > Compose New > start typing their username in the To field and it will auto fill> select

* Mouseover their Avatar > Send Message

* Their Profile > Message

How do I link directly to a specific post within FJ?

In the upper right hand corner of each post is the share icon.  Click this and you will see "link for this post".  Copy/paste the link.

How do I snip quotes and remove the quote boxes?

You can backspace or delete the text out of the individual quote boxes.  If you wish to leave some quotes while deleting the upper levels:

Go to the red line/arrow (paragraph insert) above the quote box you want to remove > cursor on the arrow > enter > backspace in this new paragraph > this will delete the quote box.

Why does my browser keep refreshing when I try to click the TOU to log in?

It's a glitch in loading the acceptance screen, not all users are affected.

The DIY method is to stop your browser as it's loading so the page loads enough to be able to check the box at the bottom and agree to TOU and then click the to continue to forum.  This takes multiple attempts unless you're very lucky since you have to hit just the right spot.  If you stop and you don't get the check or it's grayed out hit reload on browser and try again.

I have not been able to do this on mobile so I'd strongly suggest using a PC or laptop and either firefox or IE which work best.

If you are unable to get it to load please send an email to [email protected] and one of the mods will reset it for you.  Please make sure to include your user name in the email so we can take of your account.

Where can I read these rules of which you speak?

Until we can update the format of the rules, ToU, etc. here's a handy list of links.  With this list and ctrl F anyone can find the info they seek.

Can I be logged onto FJ through multiple devices at once?

You sure can - as many devices as you like.

How do I turn off signatures in Tapa?

To turn off signatures in Tapa:   Me > Settings > Signature > turn the switch off.

I am not able to give reputation to other members, why?

Every so often a user will experience this.  PM one of the mods or email [email protected] and someone will take care of you.

Why is there a category of emoticons labeled "Old - Do Not Use"?  Can we use them?

Despite the name, yes, you are free to use these.  These are from the old site and must be kept together to avoid breaking old posts...so do not use really means:  "Do not use unless you prefer searching through junk drawers and unorganized piles for things over opening a neatly organized closet and finding what you need in it's proper place."

What is a warning?  What do the points showing on my profile mean?

When a member violates a rule or ToU they may get a warning from mod or admin in a red box at the top of the page being viewed.  The number of points issued is at the discretion of the mod or admin issuing the warning.

The warning will contain details of the violation and you must click to acknowledge receipt of the warning before you will be able to post, comment, create content, etc.

In the right sidebar of your profile it will show your current total of warning points with a link to recent warnings.  This information is visible to mods and admins only.  Other members who are not mods or admins will not see any reference to your warnings.

If if you disagree with the warning which has been issued you can PM a admin to discuss it.

Warning points drop off automatically after 12 months.

What are moods?  How do I change mine?

To change your mood and let everyone know how you're feeling go to your account drop down menu > update mood > update

Moods are user specific, not post specific.  So when you change your mood it will change on all posts, like changing an avatar.

Also...waffles!

I need technical help with a problem on FJ.   What is the best way to let the tech people know about my problem?

If you can post, post your issue in the Tech Support forum.   The more details you can give the faster we can troubleshoot your problem:

  1. Your device (PC, tablet, phone, etc.)
  2. operating system (Windows 7, OSX, Android) and version
  3. browser (Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, etc.)
  4. FJ theme (Default, Uniform, Spectrum)
  5. Screen shots when possible/applicable

Also if you can trying the other themes and another browser to see if the problem persists is wildly helpful.  We still want to know so we can assist you, but knowing whether it's theme or browser specific is a huge starting off point and clear information makes at least one of the tech team want to shower you with muffin baskets.

If your issue is the inability to post please email [email protected] and be sure to include your username.

Posting or emailing above will make sure your issue is seen as soon as possible by someone in the position to help you out.  Posting about it in an unrelated forum, blogging about it, having an indepth discussion with your cats have all been proven to be very ineffective ways of addressing technical problems.  PMing one tech support person means it won't be seen until they check their PMs when there could have been someone else online and willing to help.

What is that red line with the arrow that pops up when I'm typing a post in the edit box?

That is a function that allows you to insert a paragraph where you want it without messing up the formatting.

Some topics have a Q&A format.  Why and how are they different than regular topics?

The Q&A format lends itself well to topics where people are going to submit questions* and makes it easy to track and make sure everything gets answered rather than something missed in a wall of text.

If you have a question you submit a new question.  If you have an answer you click Answer this Question and people can rate best answers.

How can I read deeply quoted posts on my phone?  Help?

When there are too many quotes, it's quite a scroll. The easiest fix is to minimize the quotes. Next to each username, there's an arrow, or carrot ^.   If you click it, it collapses that quote and all the quotes within it. I personally hide the second to last quote so I can see the last quoted post and its response.

(Thanks to CallMeChaCha)

What is my profile?  How do I edit my profile?

Think of your profile are your virtual introduction, or elevator speech, to the rest of the forum.  Its also a one stop shop for those members who want to see what you've been up to on FJ.

Your profile info is populated by what you've entered in the Edit Profile Field and your activity on FJ.  (On profile screen in the upper right of cover photo and on main site in user link information > edit profile.). You can enter and much or as little optional info about yourself as you'd like.

How do I upload/change my profile picture (avatar)?

I am having temporary issues with getting the screen shots to show in the FAQ.  Go to my profile @HerNameIsBuffy > status feed > to see screen shots in order 1-6

Your Profile > click image icon in lower right corner of Profile Photo to pull up the following options: - screen shot #1

  • Upload Photo (see "How do I upload attachments" for detailed instructions) screen shot #2, #3, and #4
  • Import from URL
  • Use Gravatar (this is a 3rd part avatar hosting software.  You store your avatar there and link it to forums/websites)
  • Remove Photo

The maximum size for the pic is 0.1 mb/100 kb.  If you try to upload a file that is too large it will not give you an error message on some mobile devices, if the process stalls check file size.

  • Uploading photo:  upload > reposition/crop option > save  screen shot #5 - screen shot #6 is final result
  • Import from URL:  Import > reposition/crop options > save
  • Use Gravatar:  enter the email you linked to your hosted avatar.  Other users will not be able to see your email address > reposition/crop options > save

Rules/Restrictions: (as with the rest of FJ, rules are few but crucial)

How do I mark forums read?

At the top of each forum page there is the option to Mark Forum Read.  Click it.  It's that easy.

How do I report a post?  What should be reported?

How:  In all content (posts, status updates, blogs, etc.) you should use the report post link for anything which needs to be brought to the attention of the mods.  It goes without saying that on a forum with this much traffic it's completely unrealistic to expect the mods to read every post; hitting the report post link will send them a notification so they can deal with the situation.  Clicking that link will give you an optional field to send a message with your report, but that's not required.

What:  Free Jinger is a largely self-policing community, which is why it's important that everyone does their part to make sure the few rules we do have are being followed.  That means reporting when you see someone violating a rule or ToU such as doxing, opining on sexuality of minors or adult children still living at home, speculating on unnamed victims, hate speech, etc.

If a violation has been made and not yet addressed by a mod or admin then report it - it's better to get multiple reports than for everyone to assume someone else reported it and for this stuff to go unchecked.  If you aren't sure whether something is a violation or not then report it and let the mods make the call.

You can also use the reporting function to alert mods to threads they may wish to know about due to quickly escalating contentiousness as an FYI.

The reporting feature is not to tell on people who disagree with you, thread drift on a topic which bores you, swearing, or people speaking in a harsher manner than you'd like while clearly within the bounds of FJ culture.  Communication on FJ is generally pretty direct and not everyone will love that.

There wouldn't be enough time in the day to deal with reports if every disagreement or critique that wasn't delivered with a back-rub and a gentle kiss on the head were reported to the mods.  And FJ wouldn't be able to function without self-policing members and reports when warranted, so use your judgement.

What are tags? Why use tags?  Where can I tag?  How do I tag?

What:  Tags are a method of linking content to specific topics/individuals.

Why:  So you and others can pull up links to similar content by simply clicking on the tag.

Where:  When creating a blog entry, topic in a forum, or event you can insert tags.

How:  Clicking the +Tag in the Tag field will pull up a list of tag choices.  You can select one or multiple tags.  After a tag is selected you can opt to "insert prefix" which will put the tag before your content title (the default is none in regards to prefix.)

If you have a suggestion for additional tags you'd like to see please PM a member of the tech team.

How do I use spoilers when I post?

In the edit box highlight the text, image, other content you want hidden in a spoiler and click the eye icon in the toolbar.

In your posts readers will click on "show hidden content" to...show the hidden content.

Hidden content will be visible to all readers, including non-members.

How do I cancel a post?

If you started a started a post and wish to cancel without posting click the "Clear everything in editor - cannot be undone!" icon on the far right hand site of your post editor tool bar.

This will empty your content without posting.

How do I mention another user?

If you mention another member in a post in the following format @ExactUserName they will receive a notification*.  They will not receive a notification if they are mentioned without the above formatting or if the username  is shortened/abbreviated.

Typing their name in the above format will pull up an autofill field of usernames.  You can select from there (clicking on the name of the user you wish you mention), or type it yourself and if the link is correct a little window with their username/profile pic will pop-up.

If you mention another user in a forum to which they don't have access (I.e. A mention of a Peter with less than 75 posts  in AYTFJ) they will not receive a notification.

*If they have elected to receive  notifications for  this feature.

How do I ignore / follow (foe / unfoe) another person?

The Friend/Foe functionality on the old site is the Follow/Ignore functions here.

Note that one can follow content or members.  To follow content merely click "follow" on the post/blog/etc.  Below are the instructions for following other members so you can receive notifications when they post or update content (per your individual notification settings.)

Following/Unfollowing/Ignoring/Stop Ignoring do not show up in your activity feed.  You will get a notification if someone is following you and allowing it to be visible.  You will not get notifications if someone follows you and deselects the option to allow others to see they are following, when someone unfollows you, or when someone ignores/stops ignoring you.

Follow a Member:

Go to their profile (by clicking on their information/avatar or using the search function for members) > Follow Member > Options box which will pop-up you'll find and optional link to your notification settings and the option to let others see that you follow ::username:: which is selected by default.  (If you deselect then you will still be able to follow the member, but you will not be visible to others in the Followers section of their profile) > Follow This

Update Following Settings

Their profile > Following Member > Can change whether visible or not as well as link to notification settings > Update Preferences

Unfollow

Their profile > Following Member > Unfollow

Ignore

When you ignore a user you will see placeholder instead of their posts which shows their names and gives you the following options if you would like to read the content:  Show this Post, Stop Ignoring Posts from UserName, and Change Ignore Preferences.

Your Account (upper right hand side of site header) > from drop down select Ignored Users > Add New User to Ignore List (list will autofill with member names) > options to ignore are Posts, Messages, Signatures > Ignore User

This will add user to your list of Currently Being Ignored in this screen.

Stop Ignoring

To stop ignoring a user you can select Stop Ignoring Posts From UserName (option on ignored posts) or you can go to your Ignored Members screen via your account and remove the member from your ignore list.

What is Chat?

Chat is exactly what it sounds like, a place to talk to other FJ members in real time.  The red/white number indicator in the upper right side of Chat shows how many users are currently in the chat room.  If there are no numbers then the room is empty, however you do need to refresh the screen to see the changes in occupancy.

Also note that when you enter an empty chat the user number updates to one, so we do see ourselves on the room tally.

A couple of tips to optimize your chat experience with sounds:

  • If you turn your sounds on you can hear people entering chat and when a new comment is made.  Fair warning for FJites with fur babies of the canine persuation:  the 'entering chat' door bell is remarkably realistic so if your pups are doorbell barkers you may want to rethink keeping the sounds on.
  • While logged into chat if you are browsing another part of FJ the sounds are off.  To combat this you can open chat in it's own window and leave it open so you'll hear sounds and still browse the rest of the site.

You remain logged into the chat room until you log out of the chatroom (upper right side of screen), leave the site, or are inactive for five minutes.

Within the chat room you can opt to ignore private messages from a member in the chat, but your ignore list does not apply to chat; you will see all members who are logged into the room.

if you want to know who is chatting before you enter go to the front page of FJ and a list of Who's Chatting is in the rig side bar.

Chat is still available for restricted members in the Prayer Closet, but not for those who are on their Journey to the Heart.

Why does my profile pic look stretched/weird/wrong?

Profile pictures should be 300 pixels high.  Width depends on your browser size so a picture will stretch to fill the space.  If you shrink your browser you can see how this works.

Curious uses a profile pic that is 2000px300px so that the entire image shows.  You can look at her profile to get an idea what this looks like.

Really you just need to play around with a picture until you find one that looks good to you or resize one that is big enough to cover your screen size when maximized.

  • When a cover photo is uploaded it may need to be respositioned so the desired part of the pic is centered in the window.
  • Select "resposition" from the drop down menu (upper right of the cover photo field)
  • Drag the pic to the desired position
  • Save Postion

Are there publicly available member stats?

Yes.  You can find total member numbers, most online, and the newest member at the bottom of each page just above the Who's Online list.

I've been lurking forever, why can't I start a thread?

Members can start threads once they have passed the 75 post threshold.  Lurking is a great way to get to know a forum, but there are always nuances of any community that you won't really get until you begin to participate.  It's a way for new members to settle in and acclimate and hopefully get a feel for what kind of topic warrants a new post before creating them.

New members can start threads right away in the SOTDRT forum.  Mods csn them move them to the relevant forum.

AYTFJ - I heard there are forums on the board I can't access in my menu - why are you limiting my access?

Yes, there are some forums on the board which aren't visible to some people (and are never visible to non-members or members who aren't logged in.)

Are You There Free Jinger, It's Me Margaret aka AYTFJ:  This is a forum for all members who have at least 75 posts.   Content here is not submitted to search engines, but it is still the responsibility of every poster to remember that the internet is forever and amassing 75 posts isn't a high bar to clear.  Site rules prohibit copy/paste and direct quoting of posted from restricted forums.

Please remember that this is the internet and it's not rational to have an expectation of privacy on a forum with 10k + members just because the newest of which (and non-members) cannot view the content.

Other forums:  There are technical and administrative forums to which members get on a need to access basis based on their roles in admin, tech, helpmeets, etc.

*Active = logging in.  Not everyone posts a lot and so this rule was changed slightly for the quieter members of the FJ community.

What are the Prayer Closet and Journey to the Heart?

Members are typically given warnings first* but it can sometimes become necessary to restrict a member's status in order to prevent repeated violations of the rules or ToU.  The two types of restricted status are the Prayer Closet (PC) and Journey to the Heart (JTTH).   Usernames if members in both groups are gray.

The Prayer Closet:  Posts made by members in the prayer closet will go into moderation and post once approved by a mod.  All posts which aren't in violation of the rules/ToU are approved as this isn't used to censor opinion.  Once approved they will post in the order in which they were originally submitted and not when they were approved.  All submitted content is moderation so including blog entries and status feeds.

Journey to the Heart:  For those who cannot follow the rules for the PC there are are additional restrictions:  cannot change avatar or location, PM other members (except for admin), start a thread, start a blog, or access AYTFJ.

When a user is on restricted status a thread will be created for them in which is accessible for only by the restricted user and admin for the purpose of discussing their situation, should they chose.  This thread is unmoderated.

There is no prescribed time limit for restricted status.  Regular member status will be restored once the situation has been resolved to the satisfaction of admin.

*whether or not to issue a warning is at the discretion of the admin.

Why can't I delete my post?

As it clearly states in the rules:

Please remember that the internet is forever, and that includes FJ.

Posters are strongly encourages to think about what they post before submitting because posts are not deleted.  In exceptional circumstances it's possible to have posts archived and taken offline; please contact an admin regarding such requests.
