Character

"Character is what you are in the dark."
Dwight L. Moody

I haven't watched either of the "Counting On" shows, but I've read @Buzzard's excellent recaps. It sounds like Derrick Dillard repeated or paraphrased this quote in reference to his brother in law, Josh. I don't know how anyone raised in the circumstances of no real privacy, no solo anything, and no real individual status can find out "what they are in the dark". At least before they move out.

"The measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out."
Lord Macaulay

Both are good points about who a person is--his character. But, when I'm deciding whether to lick the bottom of my ice cream bowl or not, here is my personal rule:

"The difference between manners and morals is that, with manners, if there are no witnesses, it doesn't count."
Miss Manners

Every time I read one of you entries I feel I'd really enjoy a sit-down talk with you; preferably at I-hop. :)

IHOP's good, or Denny's.  There are 2 main reasons that wouldn't work well right now: my kids would be with me and we'd never get to talk and I can't stop coughing for more than a few minutes at a time!

I do fantasize about getting to meet some of y'all IRL, but I wonder if I'd be able to express myself very well verbally (I can be a tongue-tied geek sometimes) or if "stuff" would get in the way. On line no one can see my greasy hair, or smell my bad breath. :my_biggrin: An FJ conference is a fun fantasy, though. Or a sit down over pancakes.

I hope you're well soon!  You never know, a FJ meetup could happen someday. :)

I think everyone worries about those real life encounters being ruined by ...well, real life.

Thanks for the well wishes. An early Merry Christmas to you! (Assuming you celebrate it.) If I'm smart, I'll stay away from FJ and any other fun distractions for a few days.

I don't know why but I only just noticed you had a blog. What a nice surprise.

I would lick the bowl, but only if nobody else were around. My thinking is that it's only bad manners if you do it in public.

I don't lick bowls in restaurants, but I've been known to do it quickly and sneakily at a family dinner. :my_blush: I'm part barbarian sometimes.

I'm a bowl licker for sure, when I'm at home.  What's wrong with it?  It's ice cream for goodness sake, why would we waste that goodness?! ;)

I always forget that. I wonder how those five daughters are doing.

Because they're less weirdly performative than the Bates'? Personally I find it more weird that the Bates post as many church photos as they do.

Oh it’s absolutely to garner attention and follower$, but the Duggars don’t even try. Then again, maybe none of the Duggars attend a brick and mortar church.

Something that occurred to me earlier today. You know how various Bates post weekly or twice weekly photos as they enter church services? How come aside from a very, very rare Vuolo sighting, none of the other Duggars post any sort of proof that they attend actual services? Not even Jessa and Ben who are purportedly employed at a church. Recently (in the last few days), Joy posted a photo on IG,  of the family walking up to a building, and the kids were very casually dressed, and I thought, here it is, a Duggar family going to church. Nope, they were going to Olive Garden.
