Game of Thrones: Prologue

Welcome to my Reread of Book 1 of George R.R. Martin's  "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, "A Game of Thrones." I have no set schedule for this, but I DO have a ton of unsupervised time at work, low expectations, and a Kindle.

In this post, I will recap the Prologue of Game of Thrones (Will) Spoilers for the entire series ahead.

Characters in this chapter:

  • Gared
  • Ser Waymar Royce
  • Will

Characters mentioned but not seen:

  • Mormont
  • Mallister
  • Maester Aemon
  • Robert

The Short Version:

Gared, Waymar, and Will are riding, about eight days from the Wall. They are supposed to be tracking some wildling raiders. Will finds them, dead. Royce wants to investigate because it's his first ranging and he's desperate to prove himself. They are attacked by Others. Royce dies. Will dies.

Thoughts:

This is a pretty interesting chapter. There is a lot more going on than I originally thought. We learn some of the politics at the Wall. Even though all men at the Wall are brothers and they do not meddle in southern politics, the inexperienced Waymar Royce leads the ranging. Despite the fact that he was accompanied by two men with far more experience. Will is a criminal. Gared came as a boy, reasons unknown. Waymar Royce brought his own clothes and equipment, which makes me wonder where the other men get their clothing and other items.

As far as I can remember, this is one of only two times we actually see the Others. I'm really hoping that we get more Other information in the next books. The descriptions make them sound really cool. (HAHA PUN). Seriously, though, GRRM wrote this before 1996. Maybe he's changed the image in his head as well.

It's interesting to me, that on the reread, Royce isn't quite as awful as on my first time. He's a highborn male, whose siblings are lords and ladies. Meanwhile, he's taking a vow of chastity while living in harsh conditions with a bunch of criminals. He's still reckless and condesending, but he really wants to prove himself.  Will did not jump down to fight with Royce, either, which might make him a traitor to the watch. I think. I don't remember the vows word for word. He's actually a lot like Jon Snow, with the thinking he's better than everyone.

Until next time!

I'm excited for this series of posts @Maggie Mae   I have watched most of GoT (I think I'm a season behind thanks to being in the hospital/SNF for so long), but I have never read the books, so I know I'm missing background on everyone.

While I'd love to read the books, I just don't read/have as much as I used to (sadly).

I was planning on doing the show as well. I know the first book and show pretty well, so I'd be able to do each episode after the corresponding chapter, or I might just do Season One after the first book, and so on. I haven't decided yet.

There are Audiobooks, as well, but those tend to put me to sleep. Tor.com had someone doing a first time read of the entire series. She literally just finished last Thursday, if you are interested in spoiler free recaps.

I would do season since the chapters and episodes don't correspond.

I'm in GoT book 5 (barely into it and I am odd in that I read multiple books at the same time).

Looking forward to your posts.

ADwD is considered the weakest book. The last Dany chapter... Wowee, I did not need those images. :brainbleach: And I have an iron stomach when it comes to that kind of shit.

You are probably correct - as usual, it's about the money and the power. Jesus is a very distant third, if He is in the running at all.

Nathan Pearl just took over the NGJ business ministries. His daughter Ashley is running the NGJ social media. NGJ is also republishing TTUAC, allegedly a new edition with some changes:

Well now. Who is going to take one for the team and compare it to the original?

      Nose goes.

Michael Pearl is the cult leader and he will feel the need to pontificate on some bizarre and arcane reasoning when the truth is likely much more logical: he wants to keep the money and the power and the esteem and allowing for occasional divorce makes all that possible. To stay true to the teaching would mean distancing from half of his kids and that would be cruel.

We have looney relatives on both sides of the political spectrum but the place they overlap is a desire to buy raw milk and organic foods.

OMG this is so funny you guys mention the raw milk thing, because as a homeschooling fundie kid in the 90s there ended up being a black market/raw milk ring that operated through the local library (small town). We would collect giant jars of raw unpasteurized milk from the fridge there (deposited from a local farm). It was an open secret advertised by word of mouth in the fundie homeschool community.

I loved skimming off ladles filled with cream from the top and using it in the baking I did for the family. Looking back, I'm just glad none of us got seriously ill.  But since this was before the internet really took hold it shows how longstanding these beliefs really are.

I think the fact that the bont kids post things all the time about their dad and not their mom perhaps reflects negatively on their relationship with their dad. They feel more secure with their mom and don’t have to post praising Instagram posts to get her love and attention. I see the posts about their dad as a way to get positive attention from him (and perhaps keep away negative attention). It’s like they are trying too hard for marlins approval

They have been raised to worship their father, not their mother. There is a disturbing picture where Marlin is sitting in the middle and all his kids and wife and around him, adoring him like an idol. At least, Duggars or Bates mothers had the spotlight, were the bee queens (not that I envy their position!), but Bontragers don't give wives that special treatment.

Based on the quote posted by @TrueRebel1, I'm going to say her parents have changed their ideas on divorce FOR THEIR DAUGHTER already but of course won't preach it publicly. Michael Pearl is the cult leader and he will feel the need to pontificate on some bizarre and arcane reasoning when the truth is likely much more logical: he wants to keep the money and the power and the esteem and allowing for occasional divorce makes all that possible. Well duh. All of it is cruel.

WTF does the following even mean?

She must be functionally illiterate. Even considering her (and her parents') belief in "rules for thee but not for me," does she even read what she writes? CTBHM was first published in 2004 -- the year she & James got married. IOW, the book was written in this century, the 21st century.

I'm laughing at your summary. Because yeah. Apparently 2004 was the time for marrying and 2023 the time for divorcing. Women saved their marriages and now women are saved by fleeing their marriages. All ordained by the unchanging Bible.

      Nothing to see here, people.
