Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Chapter 5

Chapter 5: The Golden Tickets

Grandpa Joe tells Mr. Bucket to read faster, as he simply must know the big news. He's content to sleep all day until Charlie comes home, but as soon as there is some sort of news about this chocolate factory, he's all about ordering his son (who works on the line at a factory) to read faster. Hey, Grandpa Joe, why don't you just read it yourself?

The newspaper says that Willy Wonka is a "candy-making genius" whom nobody has seen in 10 years. Willy Wonka is going to allow five children to visit the factory. They will also win a lifetime supply of chocolates and candies. To win, they must find one of five "Golden Tickets" that have been hidden in the wrapping of candy bars.

Grandma Josephine (of Joe) exclaims that the man is dotty. Grandpa Joe thinks he's brilliant and explains marketing and how using contests is part of many companies strategy.

Grandpa George is excited because of the free candy.

Grandma Georgina (of George) uses an exclamation point while remarking that the candy would have to be delivered in a truck.

Grandpa Joe tries to get Charlie excited about the possibility of winning. Charlie is sad and tells him he won't win, as he gets one bar of chocolate a year.

Of George tries to make Charlie feel better by saying he has the same chances, while George points out that other kids are buying candy every day, while Charlie gets one candy bar a year. ONE. Charlie gets ONE. Because he's poor.

:pb_lol: Yes! I loved this chapter. What a great introduction to a lesson on probability!

"Of George..."   Love it!

I appreciate Dahl's approach to pointing out in this chapter the "because poor" aspects of life, especially in a children's book.  People have to be taught empathy, and pretty early on in childhood at that, or it never really happens.  Some kids are better able to grasp it than others, and Dahl's usage of hyperbole and emphasis paints the picture of life for the poor, especially poor children so well it'd be almost impossible for anyone not to get it.  It may seem over the top, but I am sure legions of children took a few moments to ponder just what being poor actually means to kids they perhaps knew, or saw on the streets.  I know Youngest has to have this stuff pointed out to her, but once she 'sees' it, she *gets* it, and it has gone a long way toward making her a more empathetic person.

I don’t remember the phrase Tawny Owl being used, but I can remember the woman who would have used that title, as it were.

Not a fundie- but the other day a Michigan state rep tweeted a picture of a couple buses leaving the Detroit airport, wondering where the “illegal invaders” were being bussed to.

The “illegal invaders” were the Gonzaga men’s basketball team, who had just arrived in Detroit for their regional semifinal matchup.

Dude gets exposed and his response is basically, “STFU you communist.”

He’s also an election denier who has predicted another civil war.

Erica has two associations for me. One is Erika Shupe, and the other is that it was the name of the “Brown Owl” of my Brownie Guides group when I joined. Brown Owl is the traditional name given to the main leader of a Brownie unit here in the UK. I remember she always had her hair in a single long plait down her back.

We use Brown Owl for the main leader in Canada too and Tawny Owl for second in command.

I am a Brown Owl! In Ireland, but was also a Tawny Owl in the UK. I love being Brown Owl and the whole story that goes with it.

i think she announced it’d be Amaree,

My guess was Arrow Canaan on the Baby Names Thread. Her boy names follow an ACC pattern & don't have cutesy spellings. Since there's not much with the aforementioned pattern, that's what lead me to my guess.
